What is National Catholic Schools Week? Since 1974, National Catholic Schools Week is the annual
celebration of Catholic education in the United States. This
year it is celebrated January 27 - February 2. The theme
is “Catholic Schools: Learn. Serve. Lead. Succeed.”
Schools typically celebrate with Masses, open houses and
other activities for students, families, parishioners and

REFRESHERS! LOW GLUTEN
As a reminder for those who require low gluten hosts it will
always be the presider who distributes low gluten hosts.
The hosts will be held in a separate pyx which will have
been placed in his ciborium. Anyone in need of this type of
host should simply get into the presiders communion line
and say to the presider, "Low gluten" before the priest says,
"The Body of Christ."
COMMUNION TO HOMEBOUND People bringing Holy Communion to the homebound first
receive Holy Communion with the other members of the
congregation. Then, after Holy Communion the celebrant or
deacon will call you forward, you will then come forward
with your empty pyx and stand in a line parallel to the altar.
The celebrant or deacon will come down to you and put one
host into each pyx. After the ordained minister places the
host in the pyx, please close it and place it in a burse which
should be worn around your neck. At this point, the
ordained minister will pray a short prayer over you. You
can then return to your pew. At the conclusion of the Mass,
make your visit as soon as possible. Purify the pyx as soon
as possible by filling the pyx with water and consume it.
Then you may wash with warm soap and water and dry.
Remember, every tiny particle IS Jesus! Thank you to those
who are a part of this special ministry!

New Year – New Sacred Music When we are young, our family, friends and
society form us. We are schooled in many ways and,
hopefully, we become more human as time goes by.
Literature and music are two of the most powerful pieces of
culture that influence our formation as human beings. We
learn English, our “mother tongue,” and all the great
English and American stories that make us uniquely
American. We sing folk songs like “O Susanna,” and
“Yankee Doodle,” while learning of George Washington
and Benjamin Franklin.
As Catholics, we ultimately want to be formed into
those greatest of human beings: saints! We teach our
children the Our Father and Hail Mary. We pray the family
Rosary. We go to Mass and pray with all our hearts, loving
Jesus in the Most Blessed Sacrament.
We have a great duty to form ourselves and our
children for heaven. A beautiful Liturgy will do a great deal
to foster Catholic formation. Catholic literature and music
help to develop saints.
What is our Catholic “mother tongue?” Latin, of
course! What are the folk songs of Catholics? Gregorian
Chant, of course! No, we don’t all love Latin and we don’t
all love Gregorian Chant. However, just like eating
vegetables at the supper table, learning Latin and Gregorian
Chant are good for us! Even the Second Vatican Council
affirms this in Sacrosanctum Concilium.
Our Cathedral Schola Cantorum will begin singing
the Latin Missa de Angelis once a month at our 9am
Sunday Masses. This Mass is also known as the “Song of
the Angels.” Missa de Angelis was composed in the 16th
century, during the European Renaissance. It is the most
performed Mass in the world, and was a particular favorite
of St. John Paul II. If you would like to learn this Mass,

FROM FR. JOE I need your help with something. At times the Deacons, Eucharistic ministers and I can't catch
everything. A few weeks ago, a man received Holy Communion from me and didn't immediately consume
our Lord. Usually, by the time they start turning to walk away they begin consuming the host. Sometimes
however, they do not and by the time we notice it, it is difficult to catch them and ask them to consume the
host.
So, first, I would ask all of you when receiving the host, to immediately consume our Lord in view
of the minister. Second, if you ever see someone walking with the host in their hand, not consuming it, you
have my permission and encouragement to reach out to them, get their attention as they are walking back to the pew and say,
"Are you going to consume that host? If not, I could bring it back to the priest."
In the case I mentioned above, by the time I was able to find him, I couldn't be sure what happen to the host because
I had lost sight of the host as he walked back to his pew. As you may know, we have had cases in the diocese where the host
has been removed from Church and then found outside or otherwise desecrated. Let's do our best working together to make it
more difficult for this to happen. Thank you. ~Fr. Joe
