THIRD SUNDAY AFTER EPIPHANY January 26, 2020, 8:15 am - 10:30 am

Lutheran Church of the Cross, Nisswa, Minnesota Rev. Drew Bakken, Pastor Rev. Kari Williamson, Pastor

GOOD MORNING & WELCOME TO LUTHERAN CHURCH OF THE CROSS! Welcome to worship as we come together in praise and thanksgiving to our living Savior!

Holy Spirit, blow through our church with power. Open our hearts to follow your call.

INTRODUCTION Jesus begins his public ministry by calling fishers to leave their nets and follow him. In Jesus the kingdom of God has come near. We who have walked in darkness have seen a great light. We see this light most profoundly in the cross—as God suffers with us and all who are oppressed by sickness, sin, or evil. Light dawns for us as we gather around the word, the font, and the holy table. We are then sent to share the good news that others may be “caught” in the net of God’s grace and mercy.

PRELUDE Two Prelude on “How Lovely Shines the Morning Star,” P. Manz

WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

TEMPLE TALK—PR. DAVE STEVENS

GATHERING HYMN “Salvation Onto Us Has Come” HYMN #590 (please stand as you are able) (vss. 1, 2 & 6)

CONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS Blessed be the holy Trinity, + one God, who forgives all our sin, whose mercy endures forever. Amen.

Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hid: cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you and worthily magnify your holy name, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Gracious God, have mercy on us. We confess that we have turned from you and given ourselves into the power of sin. We are truly sorry and humbly repent. In your compassion forgive us our sins, known and unknown, things we have done and things we have failed to do. Turn us again to you, and uphold us by your Spirit, so that we may live and serve you in newness of life through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen.

God, who is rich in mercy, loved us even when we were dead in sin, and made us alive together with Christ. By grace you have been saved. In the name of Jesus Christ, your sins are forgiven. Almighty God strengthen you with power through the Holy Spirit, that Christ may live in your hearts through faith. Amen.

GREETING

The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the refining fire of the Holy Spirit, and the peace of God, which surpasses understanding, be with you all. And also with you.

PRAYER OF THE DAY Lord God, your lovingkindness always goes before us and follows after us. Summon us into your light, and direct our steps in the ways of goodness that come through the cross of your Son, Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen. (please be seated)

Jesus loves me! This I know, for the Bible tells me so; Little ones to him belong, they are weak, but he is strong.

Refrain: Yes, Jesus loves me, yes, Jesus loves me, Yes, Jesus loves me, the Bible tells me so.

CHILDREN'S MESSAGE Pr. Kari Williamson

BAPTISM (10:30) “Austin Alan Roettger”

READING 1 Corinthians 1:10-18 Paul calls on the Corinthians to end their dissensions and share the unified outlook of the gospel. Discord arises when we forget that we belong not to human leaders or institutions but to Christ. Indeed, the unifying word of the cross of Christ is the center of the gospel and the power of God’s salvation.

Now I appeal to you, brothers and sisters, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you be in agreement and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be united in the same mind and the same purpose. For it has been reported to me by Chloe’s people that there are quarrels among you, my brothers and sisters. What I mean is that each of you says, “I belong to Paul,” or “I belong to Apollos,” or “I belong to Cephas,” or “I belong to Christ.” Has Christ been divided? Was Paul crucified for you? Or were you baptized in the name of Paul? I thank God that I baptized none of you except Crispus and Gaius, so that no one can say that you were baptized in my name. (I did baptize also the household of Stephanas; beyond that, I do not know whether I baptized anyone else.) For Christ did not send me to baptize but to proclaim the gospel, and not with eloquent wisdom, so that the cross of Christ might not be emptied of its power. For the message about the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.

Word of God, Word of Life. Thanks be to God.

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION page 124 (please stand as you are able)

GOSPEL Matthew 4:12-23 Jesus begins his public ministry shortly after John the Baptist is imprisoned by Herod. He proclaims the nearness of God’s reign and calls four fishermen to be his first disciples.

The holy gospel according to Matthew. Glory to you, O Lord.

Now when Jesus heard that John had been arrested, he withdrew to Galilee. He left Nazareth and made his home in Capernaum by the sea, in the territory of Zebulun and Naphtali, so that what had been spoken through the prophet Isaiah might be fulfilled: “Land of Zebulun, land of Naphtali, on the road by the sea, across the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles—the people who sat in darkness have seen a great light, and for those who sat in the region and shadow of death light has dawned.” From that time Jesus began to proclaim, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near.” As he walked by the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon, who is called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea—for they were fishermen. And he said to them, “Follow me, and I will make you fish for people.” Immediately they left their nets and followed him. As he went from there, he saw two other brothers, James son of Zebedee and his brother John, in the boat with their father Zebedee, mending their nets, and he called them. Immediately they left the boat and their father, and followed him. Jesus went throughout Galilee, teaching in their synagogues and proclaiming the good news of the kingdom and curing every disease and every sickness among the people.

The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ.

MESSAGE “Power of the Cross” Pr. Drew Bakken

HYMN OF THE DAY “You Have Come Down to the Lakeshore” (vss. 1 & 4) HYMN #817 (please stand as you are able, during the last verse)

APOSTLE'S CREED I believe in God, the Father almighty,

creator of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, God's only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate,

was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen

OFFERING “Salvation Unto Us Has Come,” C. Ore

OFFERTORY “We Give Thee But thine Own” HYMN #686

(vss. 1 & 2)

OFFERING PRAYER God of wonder, you formed us in our mother’s womb, and from mother earth you bring forth this bread and wine. We place them on your table, together with our lives and all that you have made. Open the heavens to us and pour out your Spirit. We wait for your mercy; we long for your peace; we hunger and thirst for Jesus Christ, our banquet of life. Amen.

PRAYERS OF INTERCESSION Called together through water and the Word, we boldly pray for the church, the world, and all who long to hear God’s voice.

Holy One, your voice calls us to follow. Thank you for raising up missionaries in every generation and for all who create communities of grace today. Open our hearts to serve you near and far. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

God of courage, thank you for faithful teachers and evangelists in this and every place. Inspire our faith formation efforts with all generations as you call us to follow you. Bless our children, youth, and adults who engage in learning. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

Risen Lord, we marvel at the meaning of your resurrection. Give us faith to place all hope in you as we give thanks for the faithful departed. May their witness help us follow your call. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

We place our prayers before you, God, united in your Spirit; through your beloved Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Dr. David Stevens (Pastor Dave is a retired ELCA Pastor and a member of LCC) to begin a cancer support group at LCC. Pastor Dave will be bringing his own story and insights of being full-time parish Pastor for 39 years, a hospice chaplain and walking with his own diagnose of cancer. Pastor Dave was diagnosed with stage 4 pancreatic cancer in February 2018 and continues his treatment of chemo every other week. Our time together will be spent with prayer, bible study, and most importantly a time to share stories and concerns. We also will be planning an opportunity for a regular service of healing in our worship schedule. The group will be open to cancer patients, caregivers, and family and friends. Cancer survivors and their spouses are also invited. The group will help to set the agenda so the group can meet the specific needs and concerns of the members. Pastor Dave, Pastor Drew and Pastor Kari will all be available to address those concerns and needs. If you know of someone who could benefit from this group, please invite them. Creation Care Green Tip A panel of experts, the Scientific Advisory Board (SAB), was created by Congress in 1978 to review the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) scientific methods. According to former board member Steven Hamburg, chief scientist at the Environmental Defense Fund, the EPA is neglecting established science and the SAB in rolling back regulations that govern waterways, fuel efficiency, the use of scientific reports, and calculating harm from coal-fired power plants. Even though the SAB has nearly two-thirds of its 44 members appointed since 2017, with the number of industry experts tripled (as the portion of academics has been cut nearly in half), the group is pushing back against the roll-backs even as it is being side-lined. According to the prestigious, non-partisan Union of Concerned Scientists (ucsusa.org), the number of meetings of the SAB was less frequent than any time in the past two decades. URGE YOUR POLICY-MAKERS to insist on credible data that does not exclude scientific studies when formulating policy to maintain the integrity of environmental laws.

MOPS—Volunteers needed. If you love to play with preschoolers or tend to infants, your help is needed Monday, February 3 from 9 am until 11:15 am. For more info, call Lisa Trosdahl 320-232-0695 or [email protected].

Weekly in Lent, we would like our Mentors and Mentees to attend Lenten Wednesday Night Worship together, and have a 15 minute (at least) 1 on 1 conversation following worship with a snack. This conversation will help the Mentor and Mentee get to know each other and will be a reflection on the Lenten Message. Mentors, please sign up on the board in the Narthex and Zach will line you up with a mentee. See Zach with questions.
