SCHOOL NEWS

Hello, my name is Vicky Goers. Prior to coming to GA in 2000, I was a Special Education teacher for 5 years, and a stay at home Mom for 18 years. When I re-entered the workplace, I went back to school to be re-certified as an elementary teacher. I have been teaching at Guardian Angels school for 11 years. Ten of the 11 have been in the 4th grade and one year in 5th. I feel the fourth grade is a pivotal year as the students are emerging into abstract thinkers

and taking on the curriculum and responsibilities of the intermediate level of their schooling. It is very important that the children learn not only the academic skills, but also the life skills they will need to continue as they grow. This includes the responsibility and accountability they must have to be successful in later grades and in life. My philosophy of teaching is to create a safe environment where the students feel like home – but also where the students understand it is their job to come to school and learn. This includes working well with others in the class and taking assignments home and bringing them back completed. It is very important that students be given an opportunity to do their best – but just as important that they take that opportunity and do their best. The parental support of these two is critical.I feel I bring a lot to my classroom with my background as a teacher and experience as a parent of 4 children, ages 20 to 30. The GA community is a special place where families receive personalized teaching from preschool through 8th grade. I am proud to be on staff here. Outside of school I enjoy my family, (a new baby granddaughter), home projects and reading.

/G#)1-)$(::$D-'#)$-4$*"#$F(&67"HCouncil of Catholic Women will meet on MONDAY (please note the change of day!!!) January 24th at 7 p.m. in St. Francis Hall. All are welcome!

Teacher of the Week

A big thank you to the volunteers who helped make the HALOS Beach Party a huge Success - Nina Greenwood, Rich VanSloun, Kathy Carlson, Fran Oprosko, Amy Gallus, Amy Kaufmann, Nancy Nelson and Marty OKeefe! Nearly 40 middle school participants did the limbo, played beach volley ball, danced, and of course had great snacks! We couldn’t have done it without all of your help! The next Halo sponsored event will be in February - watch this space for details coming soon!

More than 40 (way more than last year!) of our middle school church and school students are participating in the CHILLFEST 2011 Lock-in next weekend with other middle school students from our area - please keep all the students and chaperones in your prayers.

56 youth formally began their preparation for First Eucharist this weekend! Two other big groups are continuing their preparation for sacraments – 39 10th grade students are continuing their formation for Confirmation in April and our RCIA group has grown to 9 participants who are preparing to enter fully in the Catholic Church at the Easter Vigil. Please keep them and their families in your prayers while they continue their formation for their various sacraments this spring!

Catechist of the Week Fran Oprosko is our 7th grade Catechist this year. She began as Joseph Watson’s (a long time 7th grade catechist) assistant and graciously stepped in as the lead catechist so that Joseph can focus more time on his new business venture. This is Fran’s first year as a catechist for GA, but certainly not her first experience working with youth. Fran has been a counselor at many camps and work with her nieces and nephews sporting/ dance teams. Fran not only is an amazing catechist – she also volunteers on

our HALOS committee and our Faith Formation Commission. In all three of her ministry roles, she not only has amazing ideas to inspire and engage our youth, but she is willing to go and turn those ideas into reality! Fran may have moved to Chaska for family needs, but she has done much more

than help her family by coming to MN! Fran is a true blessing to Faith Formation and GA! Please join in praying for the continued success of Fran’s 7th grade Faith Formation class.

Fran shows off her Volleyball Prowess!

Ancient roots

The evangelizing impulse in Christianity is rooted in the most ancient roots of our Faith: the Old Testament.

The prophet Isaiah looked forward to the day when all nations might stream toward the Jerusalem Temple, and when, in turn, divine instruction might go forth back to the world from Jerusalem (Isa 2:2-4).

The task of God's Servant in Isaiah 40 - 55 is to be "a light to the nations that my salvation may reach to the ends of the earth" (Isaiah 49:6).

In Zechariah 8:22-23, there are marvelous images of "many peoples and strong nations" seeking the Lord in Jerusalem, and of ten people taking hold of every Jew by the edge of the

garment and saying, "Let us go with you, for we have heard that God is with you."

Missionary centers

In Jesus' time, there were many Jews / Judeans scattered all over the Mediterranean world. Their cultural and religious centers were called "synagogues" (meaning "gathering places" for the reading and application of the Torah). These centers attracted not only diaspora Jews / Judeans in the area, but also non-Jews (sometimes called "God-fearers") who were impressed by Judaism's doctrine of one God, its high ethical standards and community celebrations. There is a long-standing debate among scholars about how aggressive Jews / Judeans in Jesus' time were in carrying out missionary activities among non-Jews (see Matt 23:15).

There is no doubt, however, that the Jewish-Messianic movement founded by Jesus was relentlessly evangelizing … infecting the world with the Gospel message, with the Kingdom far and wide. That it was fundamentally missionary … infecting the world with Jesus’ mission to bring God’s compassionate realm into this world of ours.

"The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe in the gospel" (Mark 1:14 - 15).

“…the kingdom of God has come upon you” (Matt 12:28).

Appointing the one billion

Each Catholic Christian really should read the Gospel of Luke 10:1-24. Our evangelizing DNA is most evident there.

Look at verse 1. “After this the Lord appointed seventy-two others and sent them two by two ahead of Him to every town and place where he was about to go.”

The words “after this” refer to the events in the previous passage. Jesus had sent out the Twelve (the inner circle of disciples and friends) for their field work training.

In Luke 9:57-62, Jesus teaches us disciples the cost of following Him. Jesus challenges three would-be disciples to expect a challenging life as His disciple, to give first priority to proclaiming the kingdom of God’s arrival, and to solve

emotional attachment to past life, to the life the world usually offers.

Jesus was set on journeying to Jerusalem in order to fulfill prophesies about the messiah, and to die on the cross: both the ultimate example of self-sacrificing love and to conquer self-oriented sin in the world.

His death was approaching. The mission needed more workers. Jesus appointed seventy-two others and sent them out, two by two, to cover different areas for His coming.

Look at verse 2 in Luke 10. “He told them, ‘The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field.’” Jesus viewed the whole world as his harvest field.

Jesus’ ministry is massively expanding from the nation of Israel to the other territories. In fact, the mission IS the Kingdom … wherever the mission beautifully infects, it becomes God’s realm in the world.

Such expansion required ministry far beyond what the Twelve and eventually the Seventy-two could provide.

This means that Jesus’ ministry is not confined to the Twelve … the folks we immediately think of when we hear the term “disciple”. Jesus called seventy-two disciples like us. In other words, we’re called too. All one billion of us.

Courage in numbers

St. Luke emphasizes that Jesus sent them “two by two.” This was divine wisdom. Ecclesiastes 4:9-10 says, “Two are better than one...If one falls down, his friend can help him up. But pity the man who falls and has no one to help him up!”

It is easy for many of us to work individualistically; it might even be an introvert’s inclination. But two by two is Jesus’ way. Two persons can form a spiritual vessel, with which they can withstand the power of fear, the power of evil. When two people pray together in Jesus’ name, they can experience Jesus’ presence and help. When bringing a flyer for church around a neighborhood (perhaps one advertising Mass times and spiritual events), it is infinitely better to go two by two.

I personally find, on a psychological level, that there is comfort knowing someone is with me in whatever I undertake. Even if that person takes a passive role. We seem to be designed by God to find strength in numbers.

What does the “e-word” really mean?

Catholic Christians are somewhat wary of evangelizing. Perhaps because we may have had a bitter experience of it, being cornered by someone who thinks we Catholics aren’t Christian and are going to hell. Perhaps we may not be as familiar with the Bible as we know we should be. Perhaps we may be uncertain of what we actually believe. Perhaps we think it’s “the priest’s job.”

The word "evangelization" means Jesus’ disciples – then and today – bringing the "gospel" or "good news" ( !"#$$%&'() or euangelion in Greek) to others. That is, the nearness of God’s realm … in some sense already arriving, and in another sense, arriving in its fullness at some point in the future.

It’s in our DNA

Continued in next week’s bulletin...

Living Stewardship NowTalk with your children about what you and they believe. Pray with them, read the Bible and stories of faith to them. Show them in your actions and words how to live as followers of Christ. Your own example carries more weight than any other teacher.

Kid’s Eye ViewOne of God’s main jobs is making people. God makes babies because they are smaller and easier to make. God’s other important job is listening to prayers. God doesn’t have time to watch TV or see a movie on account of this. God sees everything and hears everything and is everywhere, which keeps God pretty busy. So don’t waste God’s time asking for something your parents said you couldn’t have. Jesus is God’s Son. He was good and kind and did all the hard work like performing miracles and trying to teach people who didn’t want to learn about God. They finally got tired of Jesus and they crucified him. Jesus told God that they didn’t know what they were doing and to forgive them and God said OK. His Dad (God) appreciated everything that Jesus had done and all his hard work. God said that Jesus didn’t have to go on the road anymore. He could stay in heaven. So he did. Now he helps his Dad out and you can pray any time and they are sure to hear you because one of them is always on duty. You should always go to Mass on Sunday because it makes God happy, and if there’s anybody you want to make happy, it’s God. Atheists are people who don’t believe in God. I don’t think there are any in our town. At least they don’t come to our church. It’s good to know God’s always around when you’re scared in the dark or when you get thrown in deep water by big kids. But you shouldn’t just always think of what God can do for you. God put me here and God can take me back any time. So it’s up to me to figure out what I can do for God.

It is intended that this local food shelf be managed and operated by local volunteers. Its purpose is to collect food and money that can be used to purchase food to help those individuals and families that are in need in Eastern Carver County. In 2010 over 4,000 families were accommodated with over 265,000 pounds of food distributed.

Individuals are being sought to serve on the local Bountiful Basket Food Shelf Board for 2011. The board meets once a month for 1 hour or less and is made up of representatives from community, church, civic organization, and business organizations. A meeting to talk to new people interested in joining the board and to begin the process for establishing goals for 2011 has been scheduled for Monday, February 7 at the Chaska Community Center Lodge starting at 4 P.M. If you cannot make this meeting and if you would like more information please contact Tom Redman at [email protected] or at 952-227-7745. Thank you for caring.
