BEIJING (AFP) - A man insouthwest China who con-tracted the bird flu virus diedon Sunday, health authoritiessaid, the second human deathfrom the virulent disease in thecountry in just under a month.

The news comes afterneighbouring Vietnam, Cam-bodia and Indonesia also re-ported deaths from avianinfluenza, and after chickenstested positive for the H5N1virus in Hong Kong, prompt-ing a mass cull of birds.

Most human infections arethe result of direct contactwith infected birds, and thevirus does not pass easilyamong humans.

The World Health Organ-ization (WHO) says it hasnever identified a "sustainedhuman-to-human spread" ofthe virus since it re-emergedin 2003.

But according to the HongKong health department, theGuizhou province victim, had not reported any obviousexposure to poultry beforethe onset of symptoms.

Highlighting those fears, the WHO said last month itwas "deeply concerned"about research into whetherH5N1 could be made moretransmissible between hu-mans after mutant strainswere produced in labs.

Two separate researchteams -- one in the Nether-lands and the other in theUnited States -- separatelyfound ways to alter the virusso it could pass easily be-tween mammals.

A newly engineered mi-crobe can do the work by me-tabolizing all of the majorsugars in brown seaweed, po-tentially making it a cost-competitive alternative topetroleum fuel, said the re-port in the US journal Sci-ence.

The team at the Berkeley,California-based Bio Archi-tecture Lab engineered aform of E. coli bacteria thatcan digest the seaweed's sug-ars into ethanol, it said.

Unlike other microbes be-fore, researchers found it canattack the primary sugar con-stituent in seaweed, known asalginate.

"Our scientists have engi-neered an enzyme to degrade

and a pathway to metabolizethe alginate, allowing us toutilize all the major sugars inseaweed, said Daniel Trunfio, chief executive at Bio Archi-tecture Lab.

The advance "makes thebiomass an economical feed-stock for the production ofrenewable fuels and chemi-cals," he said.

A company spokesmantold AFP that the lab cur-rently has four aquafarmingsites in Chile where it hopesto "scale up its microbe tech-nology as the next step on thepath to commercialization" inthe next three years.

Seaweed is seen as an ap-pealing option for biofuel be-cause, unlike corn and sugarcane, it does not use arableland and so does not competewith crops grown for food.

Less than three percent ofthe world's coastal waters canproduce enough seaweed toreplace some 60 billion gal-

lons of fossil fuel, accordingto background information inthe article.

At peak production, sea-weed could produce 19,000liters per hectare annually, about twice the level ofethanol productivity fromsugarcane and five timeshigher than the ethanol pro-ductivity from corn.

Funding for the researchcame from the US Depart-ment of Energy's AdvancedResearch Projects Agency, agrant from InnovaChile, andNorwegian oil giant Statoil.

NEW YORK (AFP) - In thebrave new world of MP3players, compact discs aredying, cassettes are StoneAge, and old-fashioned vinylrecords... they're back!

It might seem that nothingshort of a wind-up gramo-

phone could be more out ofplace today than the nostal-gia-laden, crackly-sounding33 and 45 RPM disc.

Yet in his Brooklyn, NewYork, factory, 40-year-oldThomas Bernich churns themout by the tens of thousands, feeding a vinyl revival thathas record decks -- and cashtills -- spinning.

"It's my baby," Bernich saidin his spartan office at Brook-lynphono. "It's growing."

The small plant in a bluecollar neighborhood humswith the sound of machinesand spaghetti-like rows ofpipes delivering ground-upvinyl to presses where thematerial reemerges as shinyalbums etched with near-in-visible, music-filled spirals.

Bernich started on a shoe-string 10 years ago. Now hehas four full-time employeesand two part-time, manufac-turing a quarter of a milliondiscs a year, with plans todouble capacity.

In an age of near-instantmusic downloads and entirelibraries stored in gizmos thesize of a cigarette lighter, thearcane process of makingrecords defies convention.

But the market is vibrant.Alan Bayer, who runs the

online record store vinyl-revinyl.com, said records re-fuse to go the way of thecrumbling cassette tape orpasse CD.

Purists swear that musicsounds better from recordsthan from compressed digitalfiles. Collectors love the huntfor rare, scratch-free record-ings, not to mention the art-filled sleeves.

Although the scandal costPaterno his job, Penn Statepresident Rodney Ericksonsaid the university mournsPaterno and will honor himfor his contributions to cam-pus life.

"We grieve for the loss ofJoe Paterno, a great manwho made us a greater uni-versity," Erickson said in astatement.

"His dedication to ensur-ing his players were suc-cessful both on the field andin life is legendary and hiscommitment to education isunmatched in college foot-ball. His life, work and gen-erosity will be rememberedalways.

Former US PresidentGeorge H.W. Bush was afriend of Paterno, who en-dorsed his presidential bidat the 1988 Republican Na-tional Convention.

"I was deeply saddenedto hear of the passing of JoePaterno," Bush said. "Hewas an outstanding Ameri-can who was respected notonly on the field of play butin life generally -- and hewas, without a doubt, a trueicon in the world of sports.

"I was proud that he wasa friend of mine."

NFL Films calculatedthat Paterno coached morethan 350 players who wenton to sign NFL contracts, and tributes poured in fromNFL players via social net-working sites on Sunday.

MELBOURNE (AFP) -Roger Federer handed out amasterclass to Australian teenBernard Tomic as he reachedthe quarter-finals on a day oftears and drama at the Aus-tralian Open Sunday.

While Federer was at hismesmerising best and RafaelNadal also went through,China's Li Na left in floods oftears after she fell victim toan astonishing comeback byhobbling women's championKim Clijsters.

And ear-splitting boosgreeted Tomas Berdych's winover Nicolas Almagro as theCzech player refused toshake hands at the end oftheir stormy match.

Nineteen-year-old Tomic, the great hope of Australiantennis, could only shake hishead in disbelief as Federerdug into his bag of tricks andunleashed his full repertoire

of unreachable drops and aballetic backhand smash.

"I thought I played a reallygood match. I knew I had to,anything else and I wouldn'thave got the job done," saidthe Swiss world numberthree, who stays on course fora grandstand semi-final withNadal.

Nadal, seeking his 11thmajor victory and his secondOpen crown, beat fellowSpanish left-hander FelicianoLopez 6-4, 6-4, 6-2 to reach

the quarter-finals withoutdropping a set.

Nadal will play Berdych inthe quarter-finals while Fed-erer has a testing match-upwith Juan Martin del Potro, his conqueror in the 2009 USOpen final, who beat PhilippKohlschreiber of Germany.

Belgium's Clijsters lookedon the verge of quitting whenshe rolled her left ankle in thefirst set, and despite grittingher teeth and playing on shelooked down and out facingfour match points in the sec-ond-set tiebreak.

But the despairing Li sawClijsters save all four, culmi-nating in a brave drop-and-lob combination -- and theBelgian took the set as theflustered Chinese netted, andthen went long.

"It has to be," said a disbe-lieving Clijsters, when asked

if it was her greatest come-back. "I can't believe I won. Iknew before the match it wasgoing to be a tough match...but I didn't expect this."

The result was a carbon-copy of last year's grippingfinal when Li, as the firstChinese player in a grandslam singles title match, took

the first set but then fellto pieces as Clijsterscame roaring back.

Li gave a testy pressconference which washastily broken up whenthe distraught Chineseplayer dissolved in tearsand fled from the room.

Elsewhere Berdychwas booed mercilessly bythe crowd for refusing to

shake Almagro's hand, claim-ing the Spanish player aimeda ball at his face.

"It's what they (the crowd)think. When somebody wantsto hit you straight to the faceI don't see this as a nice mo-ment," Berdych said, afterwinning three tiebreaks in hisfour-set victory.
