January 22, 2017 Third Sunday in Ordinary Time

St. Paul urges the Corinthians to “be united in the same mind and in the same purpose” without any divisions among them. For there is no more irresistible witness to the truth of the Gospel than such unity in charity. No wonder that the first thing Jesus does when he moves to Capernaum is seek out companions. In the unity that Simon, Andrew, James and John experience through their friend-ship with Christ, they become certain that “the kingdom of heaven is at hand.” Thanks to our communion in Christ, “anguish has taken wing, dispelled is darkness: for there is no gloom where but now there was dis-tress.” To us enshrouded is the “land of gloom,” Jesus Christ beck-ons, “Come after me.”

PARISH MEMBERSHIP

Active members of our parish are identified by their generosity of time, talent and treasure. Stewardship is determined by: 1.) Being formally registered and active in the parish for at least three months 2.) Faithful attendance to Mass on Sundays and Holy Days of Obligation 3.) Regular support of the parish using the envelope system; 4.) Involvement in at least one ministry or organization in the parish is preferred. These criteria are used to verify parishioner status for: sponsor certificates; enrollment in parochial schools; participation in sacramental, educational, pastoral and social ministries; activi-ties and enrichment programs; and use of facilities and ser-vices. No activity shown for six months will move a person to an Inactive Status.

Our Catholic Young Adult, Young Professionals, and Young Families (Age 18-35) Ministry is now meeting at a different location each Thursday every week at 7pm. Usually it will be hosted at the home of one of the mem-bers of the group, but on occasion we will be meeting at a location out at a restaurant somewhere in the immedi-ate area. Los jóvenes, la familia y el sínodo En la víspera de presentar el documento preparatorio de la XV Asamblea General Ordinaria del Sínodo de los Obis-pos, dedicada al tema «Los jóvenes, la fe y el discernimiento vocacional se ha señalado que la Exhortación Apostó-lica Postsinodal Amoris Laetitia, del Papa Francisco marca una estrecha continuidad de la Asamblea sinodal de 2015 con la próxima cita sinodal del 2018. En este contexto, recordamos el saludo y aliento que el Papa Francisco improvisó en el marco de la Jornada Mun-dial de la Juventud de Cracovia, saludando de forma especial a jóvenes recién casados y a jóvenes que se pre-paraban para el matrimonio. Con su enhorabuena, el Papa aconsejó tres actitudes para ayudar a las familias a superar las dificultades y quiso que los jóvenes esposos y novios que habían acudido a saludarlo a la Plaza del Arzobispado repitieran con él esas tres palabras: «permiso, gracias, perdón»: Permiso. Permiso: siempre preguntar al cónyuge (la mujer al marido, el marido a la mujer) ¿qué te parece?¿te pa-rece que hagamos esto? Nunca atropellar. Permiso. La segunda palabra: ser agradecidos. Cuántas veces el marido le tiene que decir a la mujer “gracias”. Y cuántas veces la esposa le tiene que decir al marido “gracias”. Agradecerse mutuamente. Porque el sacramento del matri-monio se lo confieren los esposos, el uno al otro. Y esta relación sacramental se mantiene con este sentimiento de gratitud. “Gracias”. Y la tercera palabra es “perdón”, que es una palabra muy difícil de pronunciar. En el matrimonio, siempre –o el marido o la mujer– siempre tiene alguna equivocación. Saber reconocerla y pedir disculpas, pedir perdón, hace mucho bien.

La lectura de hoy nos pone ante varios comienzos. Jesús comienza a residir en Cafarnaúm, comienza a predicar, comienza a llamar discípulos y comienza a recorrer las sinagogas de la región. Comienzos que designan un horizonte de luz, como el mismo san Mateo indica al retomar al profeta Isaías. El arresto de Juan motiva a Jesús a retirarse a Gali-lea, pero luego baja de la montaña para asentarse junto al lago para reavivar un proyecto del Reino de Dios, en el que Juan el bautista había trabajado. Anuncia el inminente reinado de Dios que exige con-versión, siembra esperanza en los galileos, y va to-mando forma en un grupo de seguidores, llamados por el mismo Jesús. Así desde el comienzo queda claro que hacerse discípulo de Jesús sólo tiene coherencia en función del reinado de Dios, es decir, de hacer tangible la experiencia de Dios entre las gentes de las más diversas procedencias y tradicio-nes. High School Young Men’s Retreat

The retreat will take place at Camp Kinard located in Batesburg-Leesville on Feb 3-5. The weekend will have a little bit of every-thing-from crazy games, to powerful talks, to small group discussions, Mass, adora-tion, reconciliations, and great music. This retreat promises to be unlike any other retreat that you have ever experi-enced! This retreat is designed for young men in the 9th through 12th grades. What make this retreat so different from any other is that it is designed with young men in mind! This is NOT a vocation retreat.
