Welcome letter

Greetings! My name is Sally Anderson and I am looking forward to many exciting teaching adventures with your child. I have a daughter at Linfield College this year and a supportive husband who is excited that football season is upon us. I feel privileged to be a part of the Westside teaching

staff. I have the honor of working with your children and am looking forward

to meeting many of you in the next couple of months. We have an open house on Thursday September 11th at 5:00- 6:30PM. I welcome any questions you have regarding the classroom or instruction and urge you to attend the open house if you are able. I will outline homework expectations and have sign-ups for volunteering opportunities.

I will post homework, upload student work, provide Internet links to classroom websites, and have the daily schedule posted. Please fill out the e-mail form at the end of this packet. Expectations

My responsibility as a teacher is to enhance the learning environment for your child. In order for this to be most productive, I have established some clear expectations (code of expectations) for our classroom:

Homework

My homework policy is to send spelling and other work home on Mondays. It is due on Fridays. We also have our weekly spelling test on Friday. If there is no school on Friday then the test and packet will be due on Thursday. Generally, there is a reading part, spelling part, and there will be one or two pages of math during the week. Most of the homework will be accessible on my website: http://www.hoodriver.k12.or.us (School – Westside; Teachers – Mrs. Anderson).

Please check your child’s homework folder each night for correspondence (especially on Monday nights). If your child has a difficult time completing the assignment, please write a note with an explanation. Every student works at a different pace and it is important to me that each student challenges him or herself, but does not become burdened by their homework.

I believe that reading is essential to becoming a successful learner. Research shows that fourth graders who read at least eleven pages every night at their grade level succeed in reading, writing, math and more! Please refer to the homework sheet every evening and help your student log in the number of minutes that he/she has read.

Please sign the homework sheet every Thursday evening after your student has completed all work. I anticipate that your child will have about 40 minutes of homework each night. A minimum of 20 minutes should be spent reading and the other 20 – 30 minutes should be spent working on homework. Please write a note if your student is not completing his/her assignments in that time period and we can work out an agreeable plan.

If you are reading this, this is your first homework assignment. Please read this packet, and sign the last pages. Return it by Friday September 5th and your child will receive “zorks” – the classroom money. This money enables students to take extra bathroom breaks, fill their water bottles outside of designated times, and is payment for classroom “infractions”. Students will be paid for completing their work on time and getting 100% on spelling tests.

VolunteeringParent volunteers are welcome into the classroom and I currently

have openings for a number of volunteer tasks in and out of the classroom. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you would be able to commit some time. At the back of this packet is a form to fill out if you are interested in volunteering. Please return it by Friday September 5th so that we may work out a convenient schedule.Sign-up sheets will be also be available in our classrooms during the Open House and Westside Barbecue on Thursday September 11th. A new district volunteer procedure requires background checks for all volunteers. Please call the Westside office for details and sign-up forms. We encourage you to enhance our teaching by volunteering in all three 4th grade classrooms.

Snacks, Water Bottles and Parties

Snack policy in fourth grade is to bring your own sna ck . Please help your child fuel up with healthy snacks at morning recess. Also, please send your child with a water bottle. Water breaks outside the classroom are discouraged in fourth grade, however water bottles are allowed on desks.

Quick and healthy snack list ideas: Fruit: apples, oranges, bananas, pears, plums, kiwi, peaches, pears,

grapes, applesauce, melonsVegetables: bell pepper slices, broccoli spears, carrot sticks,

cauliflower, celery sticks, cucumber slices, peas, tomatoesProtein foods: cheese cubes, yogurt turkey slices, tuna fish

sandwich, nuts, sunflower seeds, peanut butter with crackers or apples, string cheese

Carbohydrate foods (energy foods): popcorn, graham crackers, wheat bread, granola bars, saltine crackers with peanut butter or cheese, muffins, whole grain bagel with cream cheese, cereal, pretzels, granola in yogurt

Note: District policy requires all snacks shared with others to be store bought. Unfortunately no homemade cakes, cookies brownies, sliced fruit, etc. are allowed for social gatherings or celebrations.

Technology

I am very excited to share technology with your student. I participated in a twenty first century technology grant five years ago. It entailed much planning and hard work, but also a tremendous opportunity for your child and me to hit the digital age running.

Over the course of the year, we will be using MAC laptops, a SMART board (interactive white board) and iPads for collaborative and engaging units. Before participating in this very exciting venture, I will need written consent from you in the form of the attached Acceptable Use Agreement.

The students and I will be taking digital photos and posting written reflections throughout the year. I will be adding some of these digital photos to our website. My practice is to only use first names only on the computer unless the information will stay only within our school. Please notify me via e-mail or phone if you prefer that I do not photograph your child or you do not want your child to participate in our technology experience. Please sign the consent form on the last page in order to have your child participate in this technological experience.

Please read the acceptable Use Agreement carefully and have both your student and you sign and return the last page of the acceptable use agreement.

edModo contract (technology agreement)

Dear Parents:

This school year, our class will be using Edmodo, a free and secure online learning platform where teachers and students can collaborate, share content, and use educational apps to augment in-classroom learning. Within this private learning environment that is managed by the teacher, students can only interact with others in the class. Edmodo provides a safe and easy way to connect and support learning beyond the classroom.

Edmodo will enhance the learning experience and help students develop important online skills. On Edmodo, students will be able to:

Participate in class or group discussions that are monitored by the teacher (students cannot send private messages to other students)

Communicate directly with the teacher to ask questions and get help with work

Keep track of important due dates, events, and tasks Receive and turn in assignments and quizzes View missed work when absent from class Access Edmodo from any computer or mobile device with Internet

capabilities and receive notification reminders via email or text (optional)

You may also sign up for a parent account on Edmodo, which connects to your child’s account. This is a great way to keep informed of due dates, assignments, grades, school events, and any direct communication between your child and me. You will need a parent code to create your account, which can be found in your child’s account (on the right side, below the Notifications section). Parent accounts are not required, but I recommend signing up for one to stay engaged with your child’s learning experience.

In order for your child to use Edmodo, he or she must have your permission, and you must read and agree to the Edmodo Terms of Service (http://www.edmodo.com/corporate/terms-of-service) on your child’s behalf. You must also read and agree to the Edmodo Privacy Policy (http://www.edmodo.com/corporate/privacy-policy). Edmodo takes privacy seriously and has received the TRUSTe Children’s Privacy Seal to verify this. IXL – Math computer practice

Dear Parent,

I am pleased to tell you that we will be using a website called IXL in our classroom this year. IXL is a comprehensive math review site with an unlimited number of math practice questions in hundreds of skills — all of which are aligned to state standards. One of the best things about IXL is that your child can access it from home, so you have a chance to see your child's progress!

To get your child started on your home computer, please follow these easy steps:

1. Go to https://www.ixl.com/signin/hrcsd

2. Enter your child's username and password in the top right-hand corner and click Sign in.(Note: the username and password are not listed. They will be provided separately.)

3. Navigate to your child's grade level on the Standards tab.

4. Find a skill to practice by doing one of the following:

Select a specific skill to practice from the list of skills. You can place your mouse over any skill to see a sample question and click on the link to begin.

Click on the Awards tab. Each grade level presents challenges for your child to conquer and virtual prizes to be uncovered. Place your mouse over any challenge to begin.

5. We will be using IXL in our classroom and also assigning specific practice skills to work on weekly. Students will also be paid 5 zorks (our classroom money) for each hour that they complete with IXL weekly.

In addition to making math practice exciting, IXL is designed to help your child learn at his or her own pace. The website is adaptive and will adjust to your child's demonstrated ability level. The site also saves all of your child's results, so you can monitor your child's progress anytime by clicking on the Reports tab.

I hope you'll encourage your son or daughter to use IXL daily. Here's to a year of working together to make math fun for your child!
