A Life Defined by Interruptions By C. Lee Clark, Rescue Mission CEO

“Are you Mr. Clark?”

Early one December morning, as I walked by the Dining Room, a lady coming from eating breakfast asked, “Are you Mr. Clark?” I was with a potential job candidate whom I had just met in the lobby and was taking him over to shadow with staff for the day. We stopped and I replied, “Yes, I am.”

Her eyes smiled from behind her mask as she shared, “I want you to know how much this Mission has done for me. I was on crack cocaine and I’ve been clean for six months. This Rescue Mission saved my life.” She bundled up as she headed out from the main building to return to the Women & Children’s Center. Her brief interruption lifted my day and helped this job candidate see firsthand the vital importance of this work.

Later that same day, I received an email from a current Men’s Emergency Shelter guest. He always has a ready wave and a smile, usually accompanied by an encouraging word. This day he shared an article from the Harvard Business Review titled Good Leadership is an Act of Kindness that he’d read and thought I’d enjoy. Sure enough, encouraging words on the powerful act of being kind in our leadership sang into my heart, another welcome interruption.

Interruptions are part of the daily cycle of life at this Rescue Mission. Since the Mission never closes, we are here to welcome people in crisis in their hour of need. As a result, we adapt to, flow with and grow from the interruptions. In fact, I would say that we have learned over nearly 73 years to place high value on interruptions. These disruptions and intervals

show us that God is in control and if we listen and wait, He will provide.

At the beginning of 2020, a Board Retreat started our year with strong strategic direction for this ministry. Ranging from building capacity in Recovery to adding Aftercare services for Emergency Shelter guests, Board and Staff leaders were energized and engaged by the potential of growing impact in the lives of the men, women and children we serve. Then just after hosting a successful Faith & Grace in Recovery Summit in March with Gentle Shepherd Hospice and other partners, a major disruption occurred in the form of a medical pandemic.

Daily routines were immediately disrupted but the Rescue Mission stayed true to our fundamental mission of Helping Hurting People in Jesus’ Name and to our core capacities of empowering people to move out of poverty, addiction and homelessness. Strategies did not always happen as envisioned early in 2020 but we learned new, even more impactful ways to minister. Never once did your dedicated staff or volunteer leaders waver from offering emergency shelter, medical care, food, clothing, and addiction treatment 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

We found new ways to keep over 160 men, women and children safe in a community living environment. We opened fresh options to ensure no one went hungry. We expanded technology to provide remote learning for school children in Shelter, for men and women in recovery to connect to 12 step meetings or to medical appointments and even to bring in churches to offer good news and Christ’s love when they could not come in person. We increased services to include Day Shelters and Quarantine Rooms.

At the Rescue Mission, we serve the homeless, the hungry, and those in need of medical care.

Our long-term goal for anyone that walks in our doors is a life of transformation and hope. For any of us to be successful, we must first have our daily needs met.

Separate Cold Shelters were offered in the Winter. Clinic services grew dramatically as medical volunteers and staff worked around the clock to keep everyone healthy.

As a result, only one Emergency Shelter guest and two Recovery Program Participants contracted COVID19 over the entire year. That is three people in what is considered a very high-risk population for infection. Services continued uninterrupted

and many lives were impacted for good. What a miracle! We are extremely grateful.

As 2021 launches, we will revisit our strategic directions from 2020 and evaluate what we have learned from these last months, as we step forth in faith daily. There are tremendous blessings from the large and small interruptions. We will learn, grow and adapt, never veering from Helping Hurting People in Jesus’

Name. The light of Christ will continue to shine from this ministry. As a result, all will experience health, hope and healing.

Lakshmi, Vishal, Amani, and Kian Patel donated this wagon full of pantry items to help feed the homeless and needy

Precision Pipeline employees and Mountain Valley Pipeline Inspection Team donated a variety of Christmas items for shelter guests, recovery participants and toys for children

Aubrey brought in some items including gloves, hats, bows, and socks for both boys and girls in our shelter

Kathy Wheby and her grandchildren, Emmy Elliot and Colten Christley, donated a bunch of toys for Christmas

Benny’s Pizza donated gift cards for our men and women in the Way Forward Recovery program for Christmas

The Spirit of Unity Baptist Church donated brand new toys from their collection drive
