Happy New Year! The Philadelphia ASPE Board hopes that everyone had a safe and enjoyable holiday break. Last month, we hosted our first “lunchtime” virtual edu-cational meeting. My thanks to Steve Ziga for coordinating this with Jeff Buckley of Rin-

nai. We’d like to know if you’d want to see more of these in the coming months. If so, please contact any board member and pro-vide us with your feedback. For those of you that missed the ASPE Digi-tal Experience in December, it’s still open and available for you to review until January 31st. The Alfred Steele Scholarship is available to qualified engineering students with awards up to $3k, visit www.aspe.org to attain an ap-plication and apply before January 31st. The CPD Exam will be held with remote proctors on April 5 – 16 and registration is now open. Online CPD Review Classes are available in February along with practice tests. We hope you’ll join us on Thursday, January 28th for our next virtual education meeting that will review “Flue Gas Venting Solu-tions”, presented by Jonathan Cooper of IPEX. Remember, it is FREE to attend this presentation.

TECHNICAL CORNER Happy New Year! As much as we are happy to see 2020 behind us, we

still have a daunting year ahead as we hope to work around the effects of the

COVID pandemic. We will continue to operate remotely as a Chapter and

Society. We are fortunate to be able to bring you continuing education and

networking opportunities through the Society’s Zoom platform. To date, we

have had a very great response and attendance for these online events which

means our membership benefits continue to be a viable commodity. This

month’s topic is “Flue Gas Venting Solutions”. This will be a great in-

formative session as different appliances in different applications could opt

for different venting methods for different types of appliances. I am looking

forward to starting off the New Year on a positive note with the Chapter and

hope that you will be able to join us. Attendance is free. CEUs are available. What better oppor-

tunity is there!

Stay safe and be well!

Steve Ziga, ASPE Philadelphia VPT

PS – If you have a suggestion for a dinner meeting presentation topic please send it my way as we are currently putting together our 2021-22 calendar of events!!!

LEGISLATIVE NEWS Dr. Roy B. Hunter is considered the father of plumbing codes. His research between the 1920’s

and 1940’s was key to creating and establishing model plumbing codes and is still influential

today, as the “Hunter curve” is a fundamental part of most codes. Dr. Hunter authored the Na-

tional Bureau of Standards report BMS 65, Methods of Estimating Loads in Plumbing Systems,

in which he developed mathematical formulas, tables and graphs (curves) that predicted the wa-

ter flow rate demand in a domestic water pipe based on the number and type of fixtures that the

pipe serves. Two curves were developed, one for predominantly flush valve systems, and one

for predominantly flush tank systems. Values, termed water supply fixture units, were assigned

to fixtures based on their anticipated flow rates and frequency of usage. Once the water supply

fixture units are totaled, the corresponding flow rate value is determined from the appropriate

curve. If you are interested in Dr. Hunter’s work, ASPE offers exact replicas of three of his

most influential papers here: https://www.aspe.org/product/the-original-hunter-papers-the-foundation-of-plumbing-

engineering/

Designing a plumbing system today using Hunter’s curve will typically result in very conservative, often oversized do-mestic water supplies in all but the highest demand applications. Hunter’s curves were considered conservative even at the time of their origination, as it is better to have more water than needed as opposed to not enough. Modern water effi-cient fixtures compound on this, and the result can be significantly oversized pipes. With toilets now flushing using 1.28 gpf, and lavatories dispensing a mere 0.35 gpm, it may be time to revisit and revise the water supply fixture units and/or the converted flow rate values in our modern codes. Modified flow rate curves do exist, and are particularly helpful when applied to different types of buildings, such as restaurants, hotels, hospitals, offices, etc., however new research may be needed to address the substantial decrease in water usage due to the water conservation movement.

I rang in the New Year baking my first bread loaf and hanging out with friends on Zoom. We ended up missing the countdown, ren-dering a funny situation when someone realized “Oh Crap, we missed it”. I hope you had a nice New Year and are settling back into the ebb and flows of the work day. I had not used a mouse for 2 weeks and it felt so odd utilizing one again.

We hosted a Zoom Happy Hour with a virtual mentalist and had a nice turn out. We plan on having similar events in the near future, so stay tuned, and keep an eye out for an email flyer!
