From the Editor…

Hopefully everyone had a wonderful holiday season and is now well rested and ready to

begin the vanning season. Speaking of vanning, don’t forget that there are a few eVANts

happening in January.

After the fall SEVC meeting at GSVR, I spoke with Mother Hubbard about possibly trying

my hand at creating a SEVC newsletter. She told me to give it some more thought and let

her know my decision. Well, as you can see, I have decided to give it a try.

Putting together this newsletter, a few times a year, is going to require a little bit of work

and participation from all of you.

In each issue of the newsletter, we would like to include a “Featured Vanner” and a “Featured Van” article written by

you, the vanner.

For the featured vanner article, we would like people to tell us how they got into vanning. Maybe include things like:

How did you first hear about vanning?

What was your first van?

What was the first van run you attended?

And anything else you think we might find interesting.

A picture from those days would be a plus. If you don’t have one, or don’t want to share that with us, a more

recent photo of you would be great.

For the featured van article, we would like to hear about things like:

Does your van have a name and, if so, how did you come up with the name?

How did you decide on the theme of your van?

What is the make and model of your van?

Do you still have this van?

And anything else you think we might find interesting.

Pictures of your van would be a wonderful addition.

I would like to say a special “thank you” to Mother for agreeing to be the first “Featured Vanner”. And also to Susie and

Jeff Dippel for agreeing to have their van be the first “Featured Van”.

There will also be a calendar of upcoming vanning events in each newsletter. If you know of an event that you would

like included, please be sure to send me the details.

If there is something you would like included in upcoming editions, please be sure to let me know. I am definitely not a

professional writer so any suggestions/help/feedback would be greatly appreciated.

You can contact me by email ([email protected]), phone (919-907-8338) or Facebook (Debbie Cooper Gooch).

Hope to see you all at a truck-in at some point this year!

Debbie

Featured Vanner

How I Got My Start in Vanning

By Kathy ‘Mother’ Hubbard

In the Fall of 1975, I was dating Lance Hubbard when he bought a yellow Dodge Tradesman 100. We

were married in the summer of 1976 and moved to Norfolk, Virginia because Lance had joined the Navy to be

able to buy the van.

Living and working near Virginia Beach, our van was noticed by a member of Old Dominion Vans and

we were asked to a club party to meet the gang. WOW! I found out other people liked vans as much as we

did! So when we were asked “Would you like to join our club?”, we said yes.

Years and truckins later, we moved back to Tennessee but continued to go back to the beach as much

as possible.

Not finding a club in Knoxville, we tried one in Maryville, Tennessee but they did not fit us so we kept

looking and going independent.

At a van event in Alabama, Lance met a guy named Glen Bell from Oak Ridge, Tennessee that was a

founding member of Volunteer Street Vans. We made a few events together and joined that club in 1985.

As time goes by, you have kids, they grow, you travel together

[anyhow] and you go through many changes: different jobs, different

vans, different places and things. I still have the ’74. She is kept safe

and dry in the garage built for her. And I still have vanning on my

mind.

Kathy was voted President of SEVC in 2016 as she retired from

The University of Tennessee Medical Center where she worked from

1980-2008 as a Nurse Surgical Technologist, then worked 8 years at UT

Day Surgery.

Featured Van

The Dragons Den

Owned by Jeff and Susie Dippel of Greeneville, Tennessee

Dragons Den was built as a family project. Our van is

a 1987 Chevy G10 powered by a fuel injected 350 cubic inch

engine from a wrecked 1994 police cruiser.

Modifications include a reworked Throttlebody unit

and a custom-made chip for the computer. Dual exhaust

runs into a set of working side pipes. She rides on Cragar

Wheels, fronts are 15 x 7 with rears rollin on 15 x 8 Cooper

Cobra tires.

All around exterior body modifications include rear

wing off an ‘87 Trans Am, Phantom Grille with LED lights,

custom molded scoop on a factory hood.

She has been repainted the factory color with custom airbrushed

dragon murals. The under carriage holds purple neon lights and a lowered

suspension.

The interior was custom made with an overhead console holding a

CB, switches and such. Custom headliner was made using nighttime stars

and quilted pillow and accents.

We hope to have future modifications on a gull wing side door and a

full flares kit.

Featured Recipe:

SOUTHERN BLACK-EYED PEAS

INGREDIENTS

1 pound dried black-eyed peas Water 1/4 cup butter 1 medium onion, finely diced 2 ham hocks or ham bone 1-2 teaspoons salt* 1 teaspoon black pepper

INSTRUCTIONS

Soak peas in 6 cups water overnight (10-12 hours). Drain peas, rinse well with cold water and then drain again. Set aside. In a large stock pot or Dutch oven, sauté onion in butter until onion is translucent and tender. Add 4 cups water, ham hocks, 1 teaspoon salt, pepper and drained peas to pot. Cover and simmer over medium-low heat for 4 hours, stirring occasionally. Remove ham hocks and trim off ham; discarding bones, cartilage and skin. Add ham pieces back to peas and stir. Add more salt to taste then simmer peas on low for one additional hour. If you have more liquid than you’d like, simmer on medium heat, uncovered, until liquid has reduced to your liking. I usually serve mine over white rice with some fresh diced onion sprinkled on top but you can serve them on their own as well. Notes:

The amount of salt you need really depends on how salty your ham hocks or other seasoning meat is. The peas will continue to draw salt from the meat as they cook. Start with 1 teaspoon and then salt to taste the last hour of cooking. I like mine on the salty side because I always serve them over rice, which is relatively bland.

Use ham hocks, a leftover ham bone or even a smoked turkey leg. If you can’t find or don’t have any of these, season with several drops of Liquid Smoke.
