Dear Salk Families, Welcome Back! I hope you all enjoyed your holiday season as much as I did! It was good to see the kids flood the hallways and get back to their school routine this morning. The teachers and staff are well rested and ready to pick up where we left off. I’d like to take an opportunity to once again acknowledge the sad news regarding the Salk families that have been displaced due to the sinkhole. We will do whatever we can to help these impacted families with their needs and to feel supported. We’ve already started receiving donations through form of monies and gift cards.Thank you to those that have sent stuff in or have taken it upon yourselves to help these families out. We feel fortunate to have extremely generous families at Salk and within our community. Please continue to keep these families in your thoughts, they have a tough road ahead. We will collect monetary donations at the office and in classrooms through this Friday, January 6th. Wishing you all a Happy 2017! PBIS - Refresher Training Day - “Emojin” the Possibilities

On Tuesday, January 10th all Salk students will be retrained on our school behavior expectations with an assembly to review how to be: Safe, Responsible, and Respectful. We will be kicking off a great start to 2017 by encouraging students to wear their favorite Emoji’s or the color yellow to support our theme… “Remember only YOU can change your mood.” We will focus on our FISHY traits of being

there, choosing your attitude, making someone’s day, and play! We encourage you to ask your children about this day.

Growth Mindset

How Parents Can Help Support a Growth Mindset:

Modeling a growth mindset means being willing to try hard even when failure is likely because that’s how growth happens. For example, parents should try to get excited when their children make mistakes because these mistakes can reveal important conceptual gaps that should be filled. When adults get excited about the learning that mistakes can facilitate, children start to think of mistakes as a naturalpart of the learning process. This leads to a few important changes in learning behavior:

1. Children stop avoiding challenging work just because it could mean making more mistakes.

2. Children become less likely to try “sweep mistakes under the rug” because they stop thinking of them as something to be ashamed of.

Action Ideas:

Make mistakes in front of your kids, have a positive reaction of those mistakes, and openly reflect on what could be learned from the mistake. Try to show that it’s all about learning not about being right. At the dinner table, talk about a time what you struggled with something and how hard it is and how you overcame it. Then ask your kids if there’s anything that they struggle with, how they overcome it, and what they learned from the experience. Get excited when your child makes a mistake and help them think through what could be learned from it. Even mistakes that seem careless can be good learning opportunities. For example, if your child forgot to study enough for an important test, it might be an opportunity to learn about prioritization and to-do-lists .

NOTES FROM THE OFFICE

NOON AIDES NEEDED

We are in need of noon aides to help monitor students during lunch hours. This is a paid position. The hours worked are 11:45am -

1:15pm, during days that we are serving lunch.

If you are interested, please inquire at main office. We can accept part time help as well.

Students out of School Due to Illness

The cold and flu season is upon us and with that comes sick children. While we trust your judgment we do ask that you consider keeping your child home if he/she is coughing, has a fever or is not feeling well. If your child does become ill at school we will notify you or the person listed on your emergency contact list. We will not keep your sick children at school

all day. This is for the well being of other students and our staff. Please be sure to call the absentee line to report all absences, even if you have notified

your child’s teacher. Thank you for your help with this. Absentee Line: 586-439-6890

End of Day Check Out

The end of the school day is very busy for teachers, students, and office staff. If you need to check a student out early, we ask that you contact the office prior to 3pm. Also, if you know in advance that you will be checking your child out, it is helpful to email the teacher. This allows us to more efficiently get your student to the office for release.

We appreciate your assistance in complying with this request.

After School Pick Up

For the safety of our students, any child that is not picked up at the end of the school day by 3:40 or 10 min passed release time for half day or early release) for will be sent to Latch Key. We encourage our families to

register for Latch Key if you feel you will be at risk of missing this pick up time. .

Have you moved?

We are required by the state and the board to keep all of our files up to date. If you have moved, we need to know and will need documentation to support our records.

If you have moved and have not notified us, please contact or stop in the office as soon as possible.

Documentation Required: A Copy Mortgage/Lease & Two statements/documents showing Proof of Residency, i.e. a utility bill or credit card statement.

Winter Weather - Recess/Outdoor Line Up Guidelines

Baby it’s cold outside! We receive many inquires about cold weather temps. Following are the guidelines that we follow:

Whenever the wind chill is 10 degrees or higher, students in the Fraser Elementary Schools will go outdoors for recess and will have outdoor line up in the morning. Rainy weather is an exception to the rule.

Please listen to the weather reports in advance and make sure your child is dressed appropriately to go outdoors for recess. Be sure to prepare for fluctuation in temperatures. Students should have snow boots and snow pants to play in areas of the playgrounds that do not get cleared of snow. Blacktop and concrete areas are cleared of snow but can sometimes develop snow banks or ice over time. Therefore, it is very important that students do not run in areas that may be icy.

Throwing of snowballs, snow chunks, ice, ice chunks etc., is strictly prohibited.
