JANUARY 2016 At this time we would like to welcome everyone back from the Christmas break. This newsletter
is being sent home on the first school day of January and it contains information and calendars
for the month of January and February. We also post all newsletters, calendars, and important
information on our website each month for your information and convenience. Feel free to
submit feedback and questions to [email protected] or by contacting our office at
403-500-2092.
Over the remaining months of the school year we will
be proceeding with some exciting initiatives at Blessed
Cardinal Newman School. The first of these changes
consists of upgrading and replacing student
technologies and computers with funds made available
from both Alberta Education and the Calgary Catholic
School District. These upgrades are specifically for
student used technologies in our school and are based
on student population and current district funding
schedules. If you would like more information on
amounts and schedules please refer to our ‘School
Council minutes of meetings’ or attend any of our
school council meetings which are posted on our website.
The second initiative involves the conversion of our
library into a learning commons area. A learning
commons is a common or shared space that is both
physical and virtual. It is an innovative approach that is
designed to move students beyond mere research,
practice and group work to a greater level of
engagement through exploration, experimentation, and
collaboration. A true learning commons is more than a
room or a website but rather an environment that
transforms the way teaching and learning occur. Our
goal over the coming years is to transform our library
into an interactive space where learning comes alive in
many different ways. A big thank you goes out to our school council who has been very
supportive with our learning commons initiative. We are excited about the future!
Happy New Year to everyone and thank you for all that you do for our school!

REGISTRATION 2016-2017 Blessed Cardinal Newman School is currently accepting registrations for the
2016 - 2017 school year for any student that falls within our designated
boundary. In order to complete the registration process, parents/guardians
must provide the following for prospective students:
1. Birth certificate.
2. Baptismal certificate for either: the child or one of the child’s parents.
3. Documentation showing proof of address.
All questions and inquiries should be directed to the school at 403-500-2092
or at [email protected].
Hopefully Grade 9 students and parents have begun to
discuss high school choices, keeping specific boundary
restrictions in mind. All of the high schools are gearing
up for their upcoming open houses in early
February. Students and their parents are strongly
encouraged to attend. Students wishing to register in an
IB program should apply to Bishop O’Byrne or St. Mary’s
depending upon boundary restrictions. Those students
wishing to enroll in an AP program should apply to Bishop
Grandin or Bishop Carroll. Bishop Carroll is a school that
accepts students from all quadrants of the city who are interested in their unique structure of
self-directed learning. Bishop Carroll can be a successful choice for a wide variety of learners.
Please note that students who wish to attend a high school that is outside of our district (ie. the
public system) will be required to register directly with that school.
Much more information will follow! Beginning in January, I will be working with Grade 9 students
in their Health classes to prepare for high school. Students will receive a package of information
at that time, including the workbook, ‘Footprints to your Future’ as well as a parent letter. We
will make every effort to support students as they transition to high school. Please contact me
at [email protected] if you have questions.
