What’s new at the Blair Area Chamber of Commerce

Good Afternoon!

Happy February, we get an extra work day this month since it is a Leap Year :)

This year has started off with a bang. We have been in contact with numerous business-

es that haven’t been Chamber Members here previously, but they are interested in join-

ing. I have been meeting with different groups and businesses talking about what we do

here at the Chamber, and trying to get some ideas on what more we can be doing to as-

sist our members. Watch your emails for a survey about classes coming soon.

Thank you to everyone that attended the Gateway Development and Blair Area Chamber

annual banquet. There was a great turn out and we are so thankful to all of our sponsors

that helped make it such a great success. As you all know, we have a new award that we

are giving out now called “Ambassador of the Year.” The first winner of this award, is

Jane Van Horn, Ambassador for Camp Fontanelle. Jane is the first to volunteer for writing

spotlight articles, she attends Ribbon Cuttings and other Chamber events, and she is al-

ways willing to go talk to current and potential Chamber Members about all that we do

here at the BACC. Congratulations Jane and THANK YOU for all your hard work and dedi-

cation, we appreciate you!

February is Chamber of Commerce month in Nebraska.

On Monday, we attended the Northeast Nebraska Cham-

bers Legislative Day in Lincoln, along with a group of local

business leaders. We listened to presentations by the

NDOR, U of N Regent Jim Pillen, Black Hills Energy, Great

Plains Communications, NE State Chamber President

Barry Kennedy– and he provided us with a list of 2016

Key Bills of Interest (if you’d like a copy, please let

me know.) We then had an Evening social with nu-

merous senators, including our District 16 Repre-

sentative Senator Lydia Brasch. I had the honor of

introducing First Lady Susanne Shore, she spoke

about all the projects she is involved with, and her

concentration on Nebraska’s Sesquicentennial in

2017 (150 years of statehood.) Watch for LOTS of

ways to get involved in this great celebration. All is

all a great day.

As always, if there is something more the Chamber

can be doing to help you with your business, please

let me know!

BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT : CARNES PAINT & DECORATING ARTICLE WRITTEN BY: EMILY ANDERSON, CHAMBER AMBASSADOR FOR

GREAT PLAINS COMMUNICATIONS

One of Blair’s long-time Main Street businesses is Carnes Paint and Decorating. They are located at 1635 Washington Street, and have

easy alley access as well.

Carnes Paint and Decorating has been in business since 1977. Stan Carnes purchased Alumi-Décor from Gary Leisey 38 years ago, and the

business has never looked back! Bonnie Mencke Wulf worked at the store after graduating from high school until 1998, when she purchased

the business from her father Stan.

Bonnie carries paint, drop cloths, tape, rollers, paint pans, wallpaper and related supplies, artist brushes, spray paint and the latest in chalk

paint. The paint is all Benjamin Moore brand, providing consistent quality along with Bonnie’s great customer service!

Approximately 10 years ago, Carnes Paint and Decorating added a new product, Traeger wood pellet grills. The pellets are the size of rabbit

food pellets and come in a variety of woods (apple, hickory, etc.) to enhance your grilling experience. The grill is also a smoker and can be

used to bake items as well. I understand that pizza on the grill is a treat not to be missed!

Bonnie enjoys working with people and matching paint colors to make their projects shine. I have personally shopped at Carnes Paint and

Decorating. I can tell you that there is an amazing selection of paint colors, and Bonnie’s expertise and helpful ideas have made my projects

easier and more beautiful.

Bonnie has noticed improvements in her products over the years. The paints changed from lead based to oil based. Brushes used to be

made from hog hair, but are now synthetic. Mixing color has gone from a manual process to a computerized method for exact matching.

Please stop in to see Bonnie and her amazing selection of products! The store hours are Monday through Thursday 7:30 a.m. – 5:30 p.m., Friday 7:30 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. and Saturday 7:30 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. You can call Bonnie at 402.426.2717, visit their website at www.carnespaint.com or e-mail her at [email protected].
