Transubstantiation (Defined and Explained) [from the Encyclopedia of Catholicism, R. P.McBrien, Harper Collins, 1995]Definition: "a teaching of the Church that the substance of the bread and wine at the Eucharist ischanged into the substance of the body and blood of Jesus Christ.

What is meant by substance?Historically, the Scholastic theologians and philosophers of the 11th 14th centuries (greatlyinfluenced by Aristotle*) developed a concept that divides created reality into two categories:

Page 3: January 2015 - St. James Catholic Church...Therefore, without changing the appearance of bread and wine (the accidents), Transubstantiation in the Eucharist changes the ultimate purpose

1. Substance: the essence, finality, and ultimate purpose and meaning of any created thing! 2. Accident: outward appearance of created reality (anything); the way things appear to our fivesenses of sight, touch, taste, smell, and hearing.

Therefore, without changing the appearance of bread and wine (the accidents), Transubstantiation in the Eucharist changes the ultimate purpose and meaning (substance) of thebread and wine from one of food and nourishment of the human body to the body and blood ofJesus.

* Aristotle: A great 4th century B. C. Greek philosopher, and student of Plato. (Called "the wisestand greatest mind that ever existed", by G. K. Chesterton, of the early 20th century).

ST JAMES SCHOOL EDUCATION FOUNDATION

Together we mourn, together we grow. The tragic events of Wednesday, December 17th, are stillfresh in our minds and have broken our hearts. Our community has experienced a tragedy thathas altered many lives. We mourn the loss of our loved ones and friends and we continue to prayfor the injured. The second beatitude tells us, “Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted”(Matthew 5:4). Today, if you are mourning, may you know the comfort God gives in Christ anddrink of it deeply.

Dearest Jesus, who wept at the death of your friend and taught that they whomourn shall be comforted, grant us the comfort of your presence in our loss.Send Your Holy Spirit to direct us lest we make hasty or foolish decisions. SendYour Spirit to give us courage lest through fear we recoil from living. Send YourSpirit to bring us your peace lest bitterness, false guilt, or regret take root in ourhearts.

The Lord has given. The Lord has taken away. Blessed be the name of the Lord.

Amen.

FUNERAL MINISTRY

Our ministry is composed of two areas of service. The “funeral ministers” assist bereavedfamilies in the planning of liturgies for their loved ones. The “hospitality” ladies in the funeralministry put on receptions in Kavanagh Hall, if the family desires to have a reception following thefuneral or memorial Mass. Since the two parts of the ministry are related in completing a family’s celebration of life fortheir departed relative, we fall under one blanket: Funeral Ministry. However, these services runindependently of one another. For that reason, Jackie Shinkle has agreed to cochair theFuneral Ministry and handle any issues relating to funeral hospitality. Jackie has longtime experience with hospitality, and we thank her for taking on this addedresponsibility as part of her volunteer service.

Carol McGarry, Funeral Ministry Chairperson
