PASTOR’S MESSAGE

God’s beloved people, The modern Church in the United States often neglects the festival of Epiphany. Spanish speaking communities and Orthodox communities still revere it, sometimes calling it “Three Kings Day,” but the rest of us seem to lose it in the glare of Christmas lights. The wise ones from the East, bearing gifts of gold, frankin-cense, and myrrh, have become just another part of the Christmas story. Following the interpretation of many chil-dren’s Christmas pageants, many of us think of them arriv-ing at the manger on the evening of Jesus’ birth at roughly the same time as the shepherds. A close reading of the biblical narrative reveals that this impression is mistaken, however; the arrival of the magi is a quite separate event. The magi saw the star of Jesus’ birth at its rising when they were still in the East (perhaps in Babylon or the Persian highlands). After Jesus was born and the star appeared, the magi journeyed for many months to find the newborn king. After King Herod learned of the king’s birth from the magi he also learned from them the exact time of that birth, and so he had all the male children who had been born since about that time murdered—all baby boys who were two years old or younger. For much of the early Church the Feast of Epiphany, the festival of the magi, was much more important than the celebration of Jesus’ birth itself. The arrival of the magi showed that what happened at Bethlehem was significant not only for the children of Israel, but for all the peoples of the Earth. The gentile magi worshiped Jesus even before most of his own people did! The birth of Jesus is a world-changing event for all of us. Epiphany comes early in the New Year, exactly twelve days after Christmas on January 6. It deserves its own attention. It reminds us that Jesus was born for all people, not only for those of us who regard him as our own. It also serves as a reminder to us that God intends that the message of Jesus be proclaimed to all peoples, not just to those who are like us. This is a very important reminder. In his New Year’s message to congregations of the Sierra Pacific Synod, Bishop Mark Holmerud outlined his vision for our synod: that our congregations should become anti-racist, culturally competent assemblies of believers who reach out beyond their walls into their surrounding commu-nities, and that over time our congregations come to look like the people among whom we live in our neighborhoods.

This means that Bishop Mark is challenging us to reach out to people who are not like us. He is inviting us to go outside our walls and make the love of Jesus visible in our neighborhoods. He is calling us to work hard to make our congregational assem-blies begin to look more and more like the gatherings of the families around us. The vision is an Epiphany vision, reminding us of the newborn king who drew the wise from distant countries and different cultures to come kneel at his bedside. How? Well, we have to figure that out—but it’s really important! Grace and Peace,

GOVERNING BOARD

Transitions By Alyssa O’Hair, Gov. Board President

Happy 2015! At the beginning of each year, the Governing Board prepares for a transition in mem-bership. Most years, we have members leave the Board as their term expires or life takes them in a new direction. Officers will rotate for a variety of rea-sons, also. This year is no exception. Glennis Bishop, our current secretary, and Steve Solberg, our current treasurer, are stepping down from the Governing Board. Glennis has reached her term limit per our congregational constitution. Steve has accepted an exciting position as the Director at Mt. Cross. We will install two new Board members to replace Glennis and Steve at the February 8 Con-gregational Meeting. We are very appreciative of their leadership and contributions over the past sev-eral years! All of the officer positions will also rotate; new officers will be installed at the same time. Also at the beginning of each year, the Governing Board works with staff to set the budget for the new year. While we do not have final numbers yet, many more households made financial pledges than the previous years. We are optimistic that the total amount of pledged offerings will be higher than the previous year. We have much to look forward to in 2015 and remain grateful that our congregation al-ways gives so generously in so many different ways.

Welcoming Our Journeyers

Journey with Christ | Sundays at 5pm

“Welcome one another, therefore, as Christ has welcomed you.” Romans 15:7

On January 11th, those who have chosen to continue their Jour-ney With Christ will participate in the Rite of Welcome. This is the first of four rites the journeyers will experience in front of the con-gregation on their road to baptism or affirmation of baptism at the Easter Vigil. It is their public proclamation that they wish to con-tinue their journey of faith and become more intimately involved with our congregation. As a community, we will have the opportu-nity to welcome them and to pledge our support and prayers for them as they continue this process.

The Rite of Welcome (also known as the Rite of Acceptance) is rich with symbolism. First, we literally open the door to the jour-neyers as they enter the sanctuary. Though we know many of these people already, it is a symbolic welcoming into the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd community. They will then pro-claim their desire to be baptized or make a public affirmation of their baptism. All of the inquirers will then be asked what they seek from God’s church and what God’s love offers them. At this point, the inquirers will be joined by their sponsors. Sponsors are fellow members who have pledged to support and guide the jour-neyers through their faith exploration and walk with them through the rites. The sponsors will make the sign of the cross on differ-ent parts of the body, symbolizing the work Christ does in the world through us and how we experience Christ through our senses. At this point, our journeyers are no longer considered inquirers; they now become Catechumens (if desiring to be bap-tized) or Candidates (if already baptized). They then receive the gift of a Bible, placing in their hands the Holy Scriptures that will be their guide during Journey with Christ and beyond. Lastly, the entire congregation will extend their hands in prayer over the Candidates and Catechumens and promise to love and support them and their sponsors. We all take on the responsibility of sup-porting and nurturing the faith of these journeyers as they con-tinue their walk of faith.

The Rite of Welcome is our first opportunity to pray for our Cate-chumens and Candidates. Please introduce yourself to them and offer words of encouragement.

Come. Help us welcome our journeyers into the fold. All are wel-come!

Farewell Solbergs!

On Sunday, December 28th, we bid farewell to the Solberg family. Steve has recently been appointed as the new Executive Director of Mount Cross Minis-tries in Santa Cruz, California. The Solbergs joined Good Shepherd as members about five years ago. In that relatively short amount of time, they have made a big impact in our church community. Erika has served as the Good Shepherd Office Adminis-trator for the past four years and also headed up the Gardening Team, Green Team and Knit Together group. Steve served on the Governing Board as the Treasurer and was an active member of the A-Men. Callie and Drew took part in Kids Community, Con-firmation, plays and many other activities. The Sol-berg family will be missed! We wish them all the best and look forward to seeing them when we visit Mt. Cross for retreats!

ADVOCACY

Fill a Backpack for a

Legislator

Good Shepherd | January 19, 10am

The December issue of The Lutheran magazine fea-tured an article about Advent, and how much we miss if we plunge right into the busyness of Christ-mas right after Thanksgiving. But the thing that struck me most in the article was an illustration by the author, Gertrud Mueller Nelson. Now that we are in the season of Epiphany, the image seems particularly appropriate. It shows the Holy Family in modern dress. Baby Jesus is sitting in a shopping cart. The family is bundled up against the weather, and father, unshaven and with a backpack on his back, pushes the cart past urban high-rises. An an-gel flies overhead. This could represent the flight into Egypt. But I think there is more to it than that. Jesus came for the poor, the homeless, the dispos-sessed of every age, and they are very much with us today. We who do Advocacy talk about the differ-ence between Charity and Advocacy, and we recog-nize that both are important. Charity is about direct aid to those in need, and Advocacy is about making structural changes in society so the causes of need go away. Lutheran-Episcopal Ministry in Nevada (LEAN) will have an event here at Good Shepherd on January 19th beginning at 10am, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, that will involve both Charity and Advocacy. It will be a time to learn about issues that will be on the agenda of the 2015 Legislature. Since school fund-ing will be a major issue, LEAN will be doing Charity as well. It’s our way of telling legislators we’re con-cerned about schools and we want them to be, too. Your help is needed. All new and returning state Senators and Assembly Members have been invited. Those who attend will assemble backpacks filled with school supplies. The backpacks will be given to a low-income school of the legislator’s choice. We’re doing this in January, the middle of the school year, because many chil-dren and teachers have used all the supplies they started with in the fall, and there isn’t money to buy more. If you’re living out of a shopping cart, buying notebook paper isn’t likely to be your highest priority,

but doing well in school is the way up and out. That is why we’re asking you to consider donating to this effort. Our Advocate, Rev. Mike Patterson, has ar-ranged with Office Depot to buy supplies at a huge discount, so donations will go a long way. Dona-tions can be sent to LEAN, c/o St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, PO Box 737, Sparks, NV 89432; or through the church office, marked “LEAN back-packs.” If you prefer to donate items instead of cash, please use this list as a guide: Pencils, pencil bags, ball-point pens, glue sticks, crayons, colored pencils, highlighters, 3-ring binders, spiral notebooks, eras-ers, pocket folders, sticky notes, copy paper, lined paper. If there are questions about this project or about LEAN, please contact Pr. Jack Ericson, LEAN Board Member ([email protected]) or Rev. Patterson ([email protected]), or your Parish Com-municators. For Good Shepherd, they are Karen Hensel and Judith Inskip.
