January 2015 Monthly Focus: Honest & Fair the spirit of honest and fair, and being a sister to every...

3
. This month we are learning about being Honest & Fair (light blue petal). At our January troop meeting, the girls will talk about what it means to be honest and fair in our Daisy Circle, and also play games and participate in activities to practice these values to earn their light blue petal. The importance of being honest is valued in our society even though we are witness to so much dishonesty. Our children hear the story of George Washington chopping down the cherry tree, and Honest Abe returning the penny, and then overhear accusations of our political leaders lying about...well...everything. Our children need to learn to be honest with others...and with themselves. That's not an easy task. Teaching children Fairness is not any easier. People will often cry out, "That's not fair," when things don't go the way they want them to. It is important to teach our children why they should know the rules and follow them. It is also important to teach them ways to change those rules if they need to, and how to do so in a way that is "fair" to everyone involved. For example, if the order of a game is to normally go in alphabetical order, but Susan has to leave early, the girls can decide to let Susan go first. If everyone agrees, then they will see the change as being fair. At the Daisy level, the girls should have experiences that help them do the following: Identify a truth from a lie (ex. Bananas are purple) and discuss why honesty is a good value Problem solve what they should do if they ever do tell a lie Discuss what it means to be fair and problem solve what they can do if they see someone being treated unfairly. Discuss ways to be honest and fair to themselves. Please encourage your Daisy to practice in every day by telling the truth, playing by the rules, taking turns, sharing, and other acts to show she is honest and fair. We will begin talking about the journey at the January meeting as a group Daisies who complete the Journey workbook will earn an additional patch set for their vest. This is an earned award for the Daisy Scout, not a fun patch. Please send your Daisy’s workbook (labeled with her name on the outside) to the December meeting, and each monthly meeting after. We will discuss at the troop meeting, a leader will review each book for progress each month and give her a sticker.

This month we are learning about being Honest & Fair (light blue petal).  At our January troop meeting, the girls will

talk about what it means to be honest and fair in our Daisy Circle, and also play games and participate in activities to

practice these values to earn their light blue petal.

The importance of being honest is valued in our society even though we are witness to so much dishonesty.  Our

children hear the story of George Washington chopping down the cherry tree, and Honest Abe returning the penny,

and then overhear accusations of our political leaders lying about...well...everything.  Our children need to learn to

be honest with others...and with themselves.  That's not an easy task.

Teaching children Fairness is not any easier.  People will often cry out, "That's not fair," when things don't go the

way they want them to.  It is important to teach our children why they should know the rules and follow them.  It is

also important to teach them ways to change those rules if they need to, and how to do so in a way that is "fair" to

everyone involved.  For example, if the order of a game is to normally go in alphabetical order, but Susan has to

leave early, the girls can decide to let Susan go first.  If everyone agrees, then they will see the change as being fair.

At the Daisy level, the girls should have experiences that help them do the following:

Identify a truth from a lie (ex. Bananas are purple) and discuss why honesty is a good value

Problem solve what they should do if they ever do tell a lie

Discuss what it means to be fair and problem solve what they can do if they see someone being treated

unfairly.

Discuss ways to be honest and fair to themselves.

Please encourage your Daisy to practice in every day by telling the truth, playing by the rules, taking turns, sharing,

and other acts to show she is honest and fair.

Welcome to the Daisy Flower Garden Journey

This month, each Daisy should complete through chapter 3 of the  workbook at home with family.  For those Daisies just beginning their  flower garden journey, please work through to catch up with the rest of  the group.

We would like to wish a Happy Birthday to our January Daisies:  Kendra, Sunni and Sydney

January begins cookie sales.  December folders included information about a mandatory parent meeting and cookie rally to

kick off cookie sales season on January 6th at 6pm at the Holy Family Center, Crites Room.  This is our primary source of funds

for the troop for activities.  The girls will decide an extra special use of the money at troop meeting in the spring and earn

financial literacy leaves for the Daisy vest.  Every Daisy is expected to participate in cookie sales.

Due to cookie sales, we will not have an outing planned for the month of January.  The SPH Me & My Guy Dance, hosted by

1st Grade Daisy Scouts, will be our February Outing. More info to come

By this point, all Daisies should be current in dues payment through December ($15 thus far) or paid for the entire year. We

will send home dues status notes in January meeting folders to confirm for each parent.  As a new troop and prior to cookie

sales, dues help fund crafts, outings and other troop needs.

In the spirit of honest and fair, and being a sister to every Girl Scout, it is important that all Daisies have equal opportunity to

earn badges and fun patches.  That means no girl should have personal fun patches that were not offered to all girls.  If

parents have a special opportunity or activity idea they would like to offer their daisy and others for a fun patch, please

speak to a troop leader.

If a check is written for dues or other items, please make sure to note for which Daisy and what it is for in the message line.

Checks should be made out to Troop 11710

Daisy petals are earned by each Daisy completing two separate parts: first, learning about the value and what it

means and secondly, showing and practicing the value.  The learning activities will always occur at our regular

troop meetings.  The practice of the value may occur at a meeting through a group activity, at a service project,

or at an outing, so it is very important that every girl be present for both portions in order to have earned her

petal.  If a Daisy must miss for illness or planned conflict, please see a troop leader to discuss make up activities
