Back From The Flood
A New Future out of the old flooded mess! I was driving around today just to see what was going on in Kayenta. Many people have “stepped up to the plate” and we have new parking areas, pathways and drain systems have been cleaned and cleared with a plan to maintain them. The tennis court is ready for some play. We have berms and rocks to designate areas and keep as many cars off the road as possible. The area is looking much better. Not to say we are done, but with spring on its way many volunteers will be out and about fixing re doing and just making a whole lot of things look inviting and refreshed.
LEND A HAND If you can. Just email me, [email protected] or give a call to someone in the know. Kayenta residents work together.

Infrastructure
Another bright spot to all the new building and progress is that the infrastructure of the area will be added to, up graded, or maintained. Infrastructure is the building below ground that most people take for granted until it does not work. Our coun-try needs new infrastructure and jobs are produced when the government does the upgrading to the original building proj-ect. Most people do not understand the need for government projects much less the need for infrastructure upgrades. The unseen pipes for sewer, water, gas, cable, drainage and others always need maintaining and upgrading. At work in Kayenta we can see that new lines are being established and even need-ed repairs are being done. These are critical to our community. The costs can be shared, but all must understand what needs to be done to install and maintain the systems. Be part of the solu-tion, not part of the problem support these endeavors.
Close to Home: Meeting A Need
Moving to Kayenta is much like moving to a fantastically beau-tiful paradise. Great people, energy, recreational opportuni-ties and scenic beauty, away from many of the troubles in the world, thought Chuck and Becky Warren in settling here this year. With our home under construction in the Taviawk area things were moving in a positive direction until Tuesday, Decem-ber 9 when the employees of Rodrigo Gomez’s concrete com-pany RG Concrete Group Inc. found that the locks and chains were broken on their large equipment trailer, where it was parked on the Warren lot. The trailer was empty. Gone were the Heavy machinery and tools, valued at $42,000, and neces-sary to do the many concrete-related tasks involved in building many Kayenta homes for that last seven years.
Police, news media (The Spectrum and NBC TV), and various re-gional organizations, as contacted and informed by our general contractor, Jake Joines, J-2 Construction, have been involved in covering the story, but unfortunately there are no leads accord-ing to the police.

The company employs six men with families and children to support. With a certain devastated air Mr. Gomez explains that he does not have insurance for reasons that make sense to a small business owner: the low percentage payback toward new equipment when loss/theft occurs; high annual premiums. He will be forced to again rent and purchase over time, just as he has done for the last 8 years. But this puts him on the edge of profitability.
Given that it is my good fortune to be at our home site on a daily basis I have come to know Mr. Gomez and his men. I see their character and work ethic. Before and since this theft of property I have heard nothing but positive about them.
What effects one of us affects us all. We don’t want to see this small company at risk of failure because of a theft in the night. Given our experiences thus far in the Kayenta commu-nity Becky and Chuck are hopeful that those who are aware of these circumstances will provide a financial contribution to:
Rodrigo GomezRG Construction Group Inc.
2175 E. 10 S., St. George, UT 84790.In discussing this matter with Mr. Gomez, he is clearly moved and appreciative of any assistance and contribution.

Kayenta Desert Arboretum Update
~ R o g e r H e a d ~
With the approach of cooler temperatures, our board has devel-oped firm plans for major maintenance of, and expansion, of the garden. Thanks to all who supported the Arboretum last spring, we are embarking on major improvements. We now have ap-proval to extend the arboretum south to Kwavasa Drive. We are also planning landscape lighting so the arboretum can be enjoyed during evening hours. Watch for landscape planning and care seminars this spring as well as our annual plant sale in April.

How To Maintain Your Desert GardenWednesday, January 28
2 - 5 pmKayenta’s Room for Thought
Attention all desert gardeners! Don’t know what to plant or how to maintain your desert garden? On Wednesday, January 28, 2015, from 7:00 to 8:00 in the Room for Thought, Melanie Flor-ence will share her knowledge and experience on landscaping that conserves water and protects the environment, also called xeriscaping. There will be time for questions after her talk.
A self-taught desert gardener with hands on experience as a botanist/plant ecologist while working on vegetation crews for the BLM and Forest Service. Melanie has resided in Kayenta for six years and is a long time member of Kayenta’s Landscape Committee. She is well aware of the unique landscaping

Planting time is just around the corner, so now is the perfect time to start thinking about water-wise, great looking plants for your yard. Look for news about our annual plant sale in April sponsored by the Kayenta Desert Garden Arboretum, a 501 3c nonprofit organization. This year we are planning to make our order list available ahead of time so everyone will have an opportunity to request plants in advance. We are al-ways able to obtain plants the local nurseries just do not stock and for those they do have, we generally beat their prices. Best of all, every dollar earned from our plant sale goes to maintain the Kayenta Arboretum.

As the year comes to a close we would like to thank our Vol-unteers, Donors, Foster Parents, Adoptive Parents, Ivins City Council, Santa Clara City Council, Washington Family Veterinary Clinic, Red Hills Animal Hospital and especially our Shelter Staff. With the merging of Ivins and Santa Clara Animal Control, our numbers have increased but it is working.
FIAS appreciates the support of both cities in moving the “No Kill” forward by ordinance. Ivins and Santa Clara are great examples for the entire State. We could not do what we do for the homeless pets without you! We always need additional volunteers so please consider giving the homeless pets a little bit of your time in 2015. Hike & Bike Trail
~ D a n C o r n e l i u s ~
Please take a look at the updated map of the Pickleball Trail. You will find a copy of our map on the next page. Or, you can download the new map from the link on the right side of the Kayenta Connection email. It now consists of four connected loops. The flags in the ground are now color coded to match their loop on the map, e.g. the Agave Loop is marked with green flags to match the green loop on the map. This should make navigation easier.
Here is a suggested 1.2 mile figure 8 route you may wish to fol-low on foot or bike which will put you on most of the trail net-work: From the gate at the trailhead follow the red rock edged trail to the green-flagged trail, turn right, bear right again onto the blue trail, bear right on the white trail, then right again on the yellow trail. Follow the yellow trail (clockwise) around until it joins the blue trail where you turn right. Follow the blue trail until it rejoins green trail, then you can go around again or proceed to the gate. This route will be ideal for you if you are proficient with right turns.
A fifth loop is under construction. It will connect to the south end of the yellow (Cholla) loop.
If you have any comments or problems with the trail or if you would like to participate in design or construction, contactDan Cornelius at [email protected].

There is a place where the side-walk endsAnd before the street begins,And there the grass grows soft and white,And there the sun burns crimson bright,And there the moon-bird rests from his flightTo cool in the peppermint wind.
Let us leave this place where the smoke blows blackAnd the dark street winds and bends.Past the pits where the asphalt flowers growWe shall walk with a walk that is measured and slow,And watch where the chalk-white arrows goTo the place where the sidewalk ends.
Yes we’ll walk with a walk that is measured and slow,And we’ll go where the chalk-white arrows go,For the children, they mark, and the children, they knowThe place where the sidewalk ends.

January the 1st Month of the Year
B y D e a n n a M o r a l e s
The first month of the year.
A time of resolution and planning!
The feeling of hurry and rush is over. Time to prepare for the
year. This is the time to work on planning. What will the year
bring? Sometimes procrastination on many vital issues such as
health, money, investment, taxes, car repair, home repair, vaca-
tions & family life are left behind because other things and
others wants take over. We are numb to moving on to do any
one of these issues or jobs. We usually take the easiest first. My
suggestion is to take the hardest first and move to each thing in
order after the most difficult thing is taken from the list. It has
been my experience knowing the most difficult issue has to be
done; it is something I do not want to do; I just waste time wor-
rying. I do not move forward! Nothing gets done!
Clean out if you can! I just listened to a sketch from Jerry Sein-
feld on garbage or cleaning out. It was so true..every thing we
own is at some point going to be GARBAGE. I know most of us
grew up in a household that saved. Our parents were from the
War years or even the depression and that roll of rubber bands
in the drawer or all of those nails and screws and washers were
to be kept in case we might be able to use them. I still have some
boxes full of these precious items. I HAVE NOT used them be-
cause they are never quite right for the job. It is a new era. Waste
not want not does not fit any longer. I guess! It is a hard pill to
swallow. All that stuff in expensive Storage Units really needs to
GO. Visiting your stuff once or twice a year is not a good use of
your time or money!
I am guilty so I will do what I can to make my life organized and
easier. Will you do the same?
