2015: Moving on Up

As we welcome a new year, the College of Nursing is highly anticipatory of our goals and work ahead of us. However, we can celebrate our achievements from 2014:

› Ranked #3 by the US News & World Report (2015) for Best Graduate Online Nursing Programs (#16 in 2014).› Top 14 percentile in the country in NCLEX pass rates across all US RN programs (23% in 2013-2014).› Ranked #34 in National Institutes of Health funding (2015) for Colleges of Nursing (#60 in 2014).› Achieved a record year in 2014 in research funding, grant submissions, and faculty publications.› Achieved a record year of enrollment in our Master’s and Doctoral programs.› Welcomed two new Associate Deans, Dr. Bernie Pinto (Research) and Dr. Kathy LaSala (Academics), along with 6 additional faculty and several new staff members.› Expanded classroom and conferencing technology, including key renovations in the building.› Awarded a record number of scholarships/ fellowships to our nursing students.

The College of Nursing is “moving on up” in national prominence, quality, and excellence in all that we do. This is not luck or happenstance. Rather, a result of planned strategic initia-tives that we have set forth as a team. We will continue to set the bar high with our mission to develop competent and caring nurse leaders who will shape health and healthcare delivery with new knowledge, evidence-based practice, and policy to facilitate optimal health out-comes. As we enter 2015, a few things that are on our immediate radar include:

› Legislation to remove barriers/restrictions for advanced practice nurses.› Expansion for our research centers, Center for Nursing Leadership, and Children and Family Health Center.› Re-activation of several programs: a. RN-BSN program (online) with rolling admissions; b. Master’s: Organizational Leadership (online); c. Master’s and Doctorate (DNP): Psychiatric/Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (online); d. DNP: Nurse Executive Leadership (online); e. Amy V. Cockcroft Leadership Development Program.› Procurement for Endowed Professorships, student fellowships/scholarships, building renovations.› Innovations in teaching/learning in the classroom, clinical settings, and community.› National/International awards/opportunities for faculty, students, staff, and alumni.› Design and evaluation of innovative practice models for health care delivery.› Engagement with our alumni and partners to expand our opportunities and resources.

Our village is strong! We will keep “moving on” and “moving up” in 2015 and the years ahead.

VITAL SIGNS....An Update from Alumni and Development

Eileen Leaphart has been named a Distinguished Clinical Faculty Emerita. She is also establishing a nursing scholarship - The Eileen Corley Leaphart and Celeste Walters Corley Nursing Scholarship Fund.

Distinguished alumna Eunice Rish Medhurst, BSN (‘52) passed away December 31st.

Ms. Medhurst was the first nursing student at USC to attain membership in Phi Beta Kappa and was initiated into Sigma Theta Tau in 1967. She was President of the SC Nurses Associa-tion in 1962-1963.

She was the winner of the USC College of Nursing Alumna of the Year in 1989 and had a lifetime honorary membership in the Lexington Medical Association.

A scholarship founded by the Lexington Medical Center Auxiliary is named for her, and she established the Rish-Medhurst Scholarship “as a way to repay the community for the many privileges which have been extended to me.” In 2002, Governor Jim Hodges awarded her the Order of the Silver Crescent, “not for one single achievement, but for a lifetime of accomplish-ments that have benefited the citizens of South Carolina.”

Ms. Medhurst was a dedicated nurse, a respected administrator, and a role model and friend to many. Read her entire obitutary HERE.
