Square Dance Beginning II classes start on Tuesday January 13 from 7:00 to 9:00 pm at Santa Clarita Park, 27285 Seco Canyon Road in Saugus. This is a good opportunity for fallen-away dancers to brush up on their skills. Angels are needed as always. The board meeting on Wednesday January 21 is at the home of Carol and Jim Posthumus starting at 7:00 pm. We have scheduled the A Square D Student Stomp as our second visitation. The date is Sunday January 25 from 2:30 to 5:00 pm at Wilkinson Center, 8956 Vanalden in Northridge. Our club is asked to contribute fruit trays for refreshments. The monthly restaurant fundraisers resume, with El Trocadero as the selected venue. The date is Wednesday January 28 from 5:00 to 9:00 pm. The location is 24274 Main Street in Newhall. Thank you for your continued support of our club and the square dance activity, and most of all, for your friendship. Angie Messina, President

Visitation Report by Sharon Seguine

For our visitation on December 6th, we went to the Lads ‘n’ Lassies’ Penguins on Parade dance in Northridge. For some of us it was our first time dancing to Dee Dee and it really was a lot of fun. Thanks to the Hillbillies that attended: Sharon Seguine and Hank Schuman, John King and Jody Milligan, Bob and Angie Messina, Esther DeGregorio, and Rosie Smith. As per my email, I lost the photo of the attendance list, so if I missed anyone please let me know. Also, last month I made some omissions for our November visitations. I would like to thank Bob Messina for attending the Valley Trailers visitation. And a thank you goes out to our wandering square dance couple Chris Clarke and Joni Micals for attending the visitation in November to the Boots ‘n’ Slippers.

Kitchen Report By Angie Messina

Thanks to the Kitchen Crew for our December 7 Toys on Parade Dance, Dan Stern and Marcia Shakman, Greg and Maggie Temple, and Alan and Eileen Willis as well as anyone else who brought goodies. The Kitchen Crew for January 4 New Year’s After Party dance consists of Phil and Peggy Alfeld, Paul Aunchman and Will and Pat Barker. Please be reminded that we put out light appetizer-type munchies at the beginning of the dance, saving the majority of the food for break time at 3:45. When it is your turn to serve, we ask each person to please bring enough refreshments to feed two squares. This means a couple should bring food to feed four squares. If you can’t serve on the date you are scheduled, please arrange a switch and notify Phil and Anne Hays and me (Angie Messina) so I can correctly acknowledge the people who are serving.

If you are assigned to the kitchen crew, you are asked not only to bring refreshments, but also to help arrange the food on the serving table, and to help clean up after the dance. If you can’t stay to help clean up, it is suggested that you trade dates with someone else, so that the burden of clean-up is shared by the entire crew.

KITCHEN CREW INSTRUCTIONS Please arrive between 1:30 and 1:45 PM – we rely on the Kitchen Crew members to help Phil and Anne Hays set up the decorations for the dance and two members to act as Club Greeters. If everyone arrives on time, the work goes quickly and the Kitchen Crew will be able to enjoy the dancing starting at 2:00 PM. Also, if you are assigned to the Kitchen Crew for this dance but cannot serve, it is YOUR responsibility to make arrangements to switch with someone assigned to a future dance (a copy of the 2014 Kitchen Crew assignment list is available on the Sierra Hillbillies website, www.sierrahillbillies.org) – and to follow through at that future date. Please contact Phil and Anne Hays, our Dance Hosts, to coordinate food dishes and notify them of any Kitchen Crew substitutions.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO:

No January Anniversaries

All the news that’s fit we print

The old year has come & gone & now on to a healthy, happy, prosperous 2015, filled with the wonders of the unknown. Hoping that everyone had a wonderful holiday. We enjoyed all that were able to attend our annual Open House. Many “Thanks” to those who brought food for the Santa Clarita food bank, or checks for Wellness Works. Those donations were greatly appreciated.

The Club party was well attended, but we missed those who were unable to be with us. Everyone brought delicious food & yummy delights.

Bob Messina took pictures, as we played our annual gift exchange game. It was a good time filled with laughter & fun. (Whatever George was telling Phil, it must have been good.) Before leaving on holiday I asked for news to be sent to me, so I could write my article after returning. I had little response, but I loved Phil Alfeld’s comment. “The market is up, gas is down, Peggy & I are still alive.”

The perpetual cruisers, Gail & Frank, spent 10 days on a Caribbean cruise aboard the new Royal Princess. They visited George Washington’s home on Barbados. Who knew this interesting fact about George? Two other highlights was seeing the changing of the guard at a local rugby field & swimming with the sting rays in Antigua.

The Messina’s, along with mom vacationed at a time share in Scottsdale, AZ. They attended four dances in Mesa while there, with one of our favorites, Mike Sikorsky as one of the caller s. An unexpected happening, not one wished for occurred. Angie & Bob were shopping, while Esther napped. Angie had left rice cooking in the

microwave, perhaps a tad too long, because it exploded & caught fire. Fire trucks greeted them on their return. Fortunately, Mom was unhurt.

We had a wonderful time with our family up north. It is such fun watching the little ones opening presents on Christmas day. One day we all went to the snow, so the children could use their new sleds. It was a beautiful, sun shining day, but bloody cold. I was prepared with warm clothes, John was not, but we both felt like we were freezing. Of course, the kids all had a wonderful time. We then moved on to Redwood City, where John’s daughter’s family lives & enjoyed their company for a couple of days. Just before Christmas I called Mabel Hignite. She was having

trouble hearing me on the cell phone, so I talked with her daughter-in-law. She told me Mabel is doing fine. Unfortunately, their home has been on the market for over a year, with no buyer in sight, so unable to move. As a result Mabel’s son is only able to come home on weekends. If anyone wants to move to Cedar City, there is a beautiful home there for sale. Joni & Chris were in town for a couple of weeks. They attended our Tuesday night class, but were busy with challenge dance for other events. They are now freezing off their, you know what, in their never ending travels. Joni has decided to expand her love of square dancing by learning to be a caller. She has been getting guidance and help from callers and friends and is well on her way. On a sad note, Angie received a call from Dan Dell. Kay’s father, who has lived with them the past several years, passed away. We send our condolences to Kay & her family. One more mishap was when Maggie Temple took a tumble at home. Fortunately, nothing was broken, but hurting & bruised.

Thought for the month

“Life has taught me to think, but thinking has not taught me how to live.”
