January 2014 Volume 36, Number 1

Dear Fellow Servant;

Blessed New Year! Are you ready for a “puzzler” to begin this year with?

The following are the lyrics of a 16th century English Christmas carol written in Old

English and Latin. See if you can figure out what the modern English words

would be (I provided a rough translation on the next page of the newsletter.

I think this carol’s lyrics remind us that while Christmas is a season of cele-

bration, it really invites us into a lifestyle of service. If you want a hint for the trans-

lation, look up Matthew 25:31-46.

As we enter a new year of grace may we keep this thought in mind and

gratefully live our lives in loving all those around us.

Marcia and I do thank you for your generous spirit shown in cards, letters,

and gifts during this season. Our almost 14 years among you have been a time

for which we are most grateful. I do love you. Peace+ Pr. Schaefer

“Come to me” is a blessed song for them that for joy doth long and shall forsake pains strong: “Come to me at Judgment” Glad in heart may they be When Christ says, "Come You blessed children, come to me, Into eternal life. “When I hungered, you gave me meat; You clothed me against the heat; In trouble you did me not forget; Come to me at Judgment.

Plan now to join us at 12:30pm on January 26 for our annual State of the Parish meeting. This year’s will be different in that we will have our Circuit Counselor Pastor Keith Less, and our Mission Facilitator Pastor Lloyd Gaines here to help explain the process for calling a new pastor, what the plan is for the interim ministry and answer your questions. A light lunch will be served. Sign up sheets will be in the bulletins. Please register and plan to attend this important meeting.

Translation:

“You succored me at your door And for my sake gave to the poor; Therefore I will you succor; Come to me at Judgment.” Sorry in heart may they be That hear this heavy word: "Depart You cursed children, go from me Into eternal fire. “When for need that I did cry, Comfortless you let me die; Therefore now I you deny; Come to me at Judgment.

“For by me you set no store You shall abide right there In hell with devils for evermore; Come to me at judgment.”

SOCIAL MINISTRY would like to thank all who made turkeys and provided side dishes for Dale Dunning’s Thanksgiving dinner for the Midway Soup Kitchen. We were able to provide 8 turkeys for her dinner and many other extras. Such a great gift for so many people to enjoy. WE WOULD like to take a moment to thank you all for your generous gifts at Christmas. Your thoughtfulness, not only at the holidays but throughout the year, is sincerely appreciated. Sister Deb & Kelley COOKIES FOR PRISONERS Thank you to everyone who contributed to L-RAC’s cookies for prison-ers project. A special thank you to Carole Garwood for providing the little pocket calendars that we include in our packets of cookies. LCOS provided 2,198 of the total 5,148 cookies delivered to the inmates of SCI. A BIG THANK YOU to everyone who participated in assembling gift baskets for our shut-ins. The Sunday School children had a great time coloring pictures for our shut-ins. A special thank you to Renee Bennett and Geri Jacobson-Haga for spearheading this project. THE VOTING RESULTS from the November 2013 Semi-annual Congregational Meeting are as fol-lows: Officers, Board Chairs, & Elders 82 Approved 4 Disapproved 0 Abstained 2014 Operating Budget 73 Approved 8 Disapproved 5 Abstained PROPERTY MANAGEMENT It is our sad duty to inform everyone that the two trees at the main

entrance to the Narthex need to be removed. This will help alleviate some of the issues we’ve had with clogged gutters and mildew growth on the siding. This will also help relieve some of the issues we’ve had with bird droppings on the benches by the entrance, which has made the benches almost unusable. After the trees are removed, we will find that the Narthex is a lot brighter as more sunlight will be allowed to enter it. The garden committee will be looking at what they can plant in place of the trees.

SUGGESTION BOX Do you have a great idea but aren’t sure how to share it? Well, wonder no more; we have a suggestion box! It is located on the wall with the congregational mailboxes – it’s on the far right at the top and it says “Suggestion Box” on it. We check the box periodically to see if anyone has submitted any suggestions, and we forward them on to the appropriate person/board. All suggestions are looked at: you don’t have to put your name on yours if you don’t want to.

LCOS MEMBER IN THE NEWS: (From the December 17th online edition of the Cape Gazette.) “Joseph Tridente receives 2013 Coast Guard Auxiliary Award Each year the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary Division 12, which includes Kent and Sussex counties, picks a member who stands out and is recognized for outstanding contributions and dedication to duty in promoting the aims, ideals and programs of the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary. The 2013 Auxiliarist of the Year is Joseph M. Tridente. He received his award from Division Chief of Staff K.C. Murphy at the awards cer-emony held Nov. 30 at Abbott's Grill in Milford. His Flotilla CDR Steve Smyk nominated Tridente for his many hours in support of the Safe Boating programs of the auxiliary. Smyk said

Tridente has performed hundreds of vessel exams and provides essential information to the boating public regarding federal and state laws and boating safety. Smyk said there is no possible way to measure how many lives were saved by his efforts. He added that Tridente is a member of the Lewes Flotilla and is one of a kind in his dedication, patience, knowledge and perseverance.” AARP Driver Safety Course The AARP Smart Driver course teaches valuable defensive driving skills and pro-vides a refresher of the rules of the road. Since 1979, the course has helped over 14 million drivers learn proven safety strategies and tips for how to adapt one’s driv-ing to compensate for physical and cognitive changes that may come with aging. Plus, you may qualify for an automobile insurance discount by completing the course (participants should check with their auto insurance agent for details). Take the AARP Smart Driver course at LCOS on Friday, January 17 from 9am-3pm. The course costs $15 for AARP members and $20 for non-members. Space is limited so register now by calling Andy Mollura at (302) 703-2074 or email [email protected]. All are welcome. We received the following from the Point Pleasant, NJ community: “To the members of the Lutheran Church of Our Savior, It is our pleasure to send this handmade ornament to you for your church Christmas tree. We are so thankful for your support this year as we struggled to minister to those suffering post-Sandy. Your kind-ness and generosity were truly appreciated. May the love of Jesus warm your hearts and homes in 2014. Serving Him, Good Shepherd Lutheran Church Sandy Response Team” We hung the ornament on the Christmas tree in the Fellowship Hall. Thank you to all who donated so generously throughout the year.
