799 is not accePtaBle!by Bart Guthrie, P.P.Recorder

Recently Shriners International sent an email “299,999isnotacceptable!”Itrelates to overall membership droppingbelow300,000bytheendofDecember2012.As I write this, Al Kaly has over 40 members that have not paid their 2012 dues and their membership will be suspendedonJanuary1,2013.This,alongwithnormalattrition, has the potential to drop Al Kaly’s membership to 799. In my opinion, our Membership Chair and Membership Committee have done its best to get these memberstomaintaintheirmembership.It’sunfortunate;but,regardlessofeffortsmade,wecontinueonthedecline.Let’s reverse this in 2013 and let’s have everybody pay their dues!

This past weekend I was speaking to a class of new candidates for the Scottish Rite, Southern Colorado Consistory.Atsomepoint, oneoftheBrothersmentionedthat another of the candidates, Brother Joseph Keith Clendaniel,hadagoodthoughtweshouldallhear.Afterhearinghiscomment,whichhecallsthe“TenMasonChallenge”,Ithoughtitshouldbeoutthereforalltohear. We ask men to join us in our Lodges, we tell them it is a place where friends become Brothers, and then we drop theball. The challenge is to live up to that promise by spendingtimetogether, workingforcommongoals.Thatgoal is to learn about the men and their families, getting to gettoknowtheirwives, children, andeventheirpets.Forexample, this Brother has six sisters and he knows all their husband’snames.Itsoundsoddtosayitlikethat, butifweare to become true Brothers that knowledge is something weshouldhave.Weaskallthesequestionswhenamanwants to join us, put that information on a piece of paper andplaceinhisfile.Thisinformationmeansnothingifwedon'tknowanduseitinourdailylives. In order to become true Brothers, we need to spend time in the service of each other and understand each other’sgoals.IfaBrothercalledyouat4AMin the morning needing to go to the hospital, etc, would you throw on your pants and be thereforhim?Wearenotaskingmentoknoweveryone.Thatisbeyondmostpeople.What we are asking men to do is to grow theirfamiliesbytenfold.Thesecirclesoffriends and Brothers will overlap in ways we cannotevenfathom.Yet,evenifamanfailsto meet the ten, he will still win, because he has tried, he has put his hand out in friendship and Brotherly love, and when you dothatyouneverfail. Brothers, it doesn’t stop at the Blue Lodge.AswebringBrothersintotheRiteBodies and the Shrine, this activity is just asimportant.Ofcourse, nowwecallthemMentors and ask them to be there for that new Brother to answer his questions and lead him alongtheway.
