Political Debate at BingoDear Readers:

A few months ago, a letter appeared in this column from a reader who was alarmed by a disagreement that took place between two players while she was attending Bingo. The argument was political in nature, grew quite heated, and eventually required the caller to step in and end it.

Apparently, this was not an isolated incident; a number of readers wrote in to say that they have witnessed similar disagreements at Bingo and elsewhere. Some of these letters follow. —Aunt Bingo

Dear Aunt Bingo:I literally just got home from Bingo with

my copy of the latest issue of your Bingo paper and was very interested to read the letter from Barbara M. who wrote in to you about witnessing people getting into a political argument while at Bingo.

I was surprised to see the letter because not two hours earlier the exact same thing happened at my Bingo hall. Several people got into a shouting match over some issue related to President Donald Trump. And I am not exaggerating when I call it a shouting match: These people were yelling at the top of their lungs at each other—one criticizing the president and the other defending him—and I thought for sure someone was going to get punched before the argument was over.

Players sitting near the commotion began gathering their things and moving to other seats. Finally, the hall manager came out and told them to stop. One of them did, but the other one just kept on barking at her all red faced and wild. She was practically spitting! The manager got tired of trying to reason with her and finally kicked her out of the hall. It was INSANE!B.L., New York, via email

Dear Aunt Bingo:It is interesting that somebody wrote you

a letter about people fighting at Bingo. I have seen this happen twice not too long ago…one time in the parking lot of the Bingo where two people actually grabbed each other and wrestled while they shouted at each other (both women), and the other time inside the Bingo center where a couple of men got into it during a break between sessions.

Just like with the case of the person who wrote in to you, both times it was about the political situation in the United States today. And both times it started with someone expressing an opinion to a companion and being overheard by a third party who had to jump in and turn the conversation into an argument.

To me it is amazing that, regardless of what side of the political spectrum you are on, today the atmosphere is so tense that expressing an opinion can suddenly find you being attacked by a complete stranger who overheard something you said and didn’t like it.Eye Witness, Texas, via email

Dear Aunt Bingo:Just FYI…I am a patriot. If I hear

someone talking smack about this country or our leaders, I sure as hell am going to speak up. And I have done so: at Bingo, at the grocery store, on the street, wherever.

Sure, they have the right to say whatever they want. That’s what freedom of speech is all about. But I have that same right. And I am not going to sit by silent when someone is spouting off against this great nation.R. West, Wisconsin, via email

Lucky Lotto Newsn Jersey Girls Wins Big

Thanks to DadA New Jersey woman who received scratch-off lottery tickets as a gift from her father won big when one turned out to be worth $2 million. Melissa Spagnola, of Little Silver, won the top prize for the “100X The Bucks” game. Spangola said she scratched off the $20 ticket in front of her family. She didn’t know how to play the game but thought she might have won. She showed it to her parents who confirmed it was a winner and worth $2 million. Spangola took her family on vacation to the Bahamas with her winnings and plans to share some of the windfall with them.

Lottery Error CorrectedThe Washington, D.C. Lottery is paying out thousands of dollars to people with losing tickets after reporting the wrong winning numbers due to “human error.” Once the mistake was discovered, lottery officials announced the correct set of winning numbers and decided to pay out both the actual winning numbers as well as the numbers that were announced by mistake. According to the D.C. Lottery, 773 losing tickets were designated as winners because of the error. Total value of winnings for those tickets was nearly $128,000. People with tickets from the drawing have been given until June 10, 2019 to cash them in at the D.C. Lottery Prize Center. New software has been installed to the lottery draw system to ensure the error cannot reoccur.

Shopping Spree Includes $40 Million Lotto PrizeA Canadian woman has become almost $40 million richer, all because she decided to brave the winter weather for a shopping excursion. Michelle De Roma of Surrey, British Columbia, purchased the winning ticket to a Lotto Max draw during a shopping trip to an outlet mall. De Roma plays the lottery weekly and her winning numbers were randomly generated through a quick pick. She plans to use her winnings to buy a new home for herself and her family, travel, and invest in real estate.

Ticket Claimed Just Days Before ExpirationEighty-five-year-old Bob Hissom of Plymouth, Michigan, bought a winning lottery ticket Jan. 1, 2018 but didn’t cash it in until it was about to expire. The winning saga began last year when he bought Lotto tickets like he does every week at a local market, including a Lucky for Life easy pick with a payout of $25,000 a year for life. Hissom keeps all his old tickets in a tin box, including the Jan. 1 ticket he thought was a loser. Months later he saw a story on the news about an unclaimed winning ticket, and out of curiosity decided to check his tin of old ones. That’s when he found the winner, just days before expiration. Due to his advanced age, Hissom opted for a lump sum payment of $390,000 before taxes.

Pro Cyclist Helps After FireFormer professional cyclist Levi Leipheimer—a Tour de France podium winner, three-time champion of the AmgenTour in California, and advocate for marginalized youth—served as host of a special Bingo event sponsored by Coffey Strong, an organization formed after fire destroyed the Coffey Park community in Santa Rosa, California. Admission covered 24 games of Bingo (and a free dauber!), there were prizes and drawings, and beer and wine were for sale in addition to a taco/fajita bar. The event was one of many the community has sponsored with the goal of bringing the community of Coffey Park closer together after thousands of residents either lost their homes or suffered other losses as a result of a massive 2017 fire.

Illinois Governor-Elect Calls BingoPrior to being sworn in as the 43rd governor of the Illinois, J. B. Pritzker traveled throughout the state for a pre-inauguration Day of Service, during which he participated in thirteen events that highlighted and encouraged volunteerism. Among his stops was Downer Place of Lutheran Social Services of Illinois, an apartment complex for senior citizens in Aurora, the second largest city in the state. Several members of Boys II Men, an Aurora-based mentoring organization for at-risk youth, served meals to the 65 residents who attended the event, which included remarks from the governor-elect as well as games of Bingo, for which Pritzker served as the caller.

Singo Bingo in MassachusettsQuincy, Massachusetts, seniors got the chance to socialize with friends, play Bingo, and listen to classic songs from the ’50s and ’60s during Singo Bingo—an event sponsored by the Quincy Council on Aging at the Quincy Kennedy Center. Singo Bingo replaces the numbers and letters of a traditional Bingo card with song titles. Players checked off boxes on their cards as the DJ played songs. Five in a row got Bingo. About 50 people attended the event that at times was as much a singalong as it was a Bingo game. Organizers plan to repeat Singo Bingo in the future.

Bingo Hall ShootingPolice have reported that a man opened fire inside a crowded VFW Post Bingo in Evansville, Indiana, while Bingo was in session. Several hundred people were reportedly inside preparing for the next Bingo game when they heard a loud “bang,” a witness said. Evansville Police Sgt. Mark Saltzman said one person was shot with a revolver in the left side of his chest. Saltzman says the shooter and the victim knew each other and had an ongoing personal dispute. Three people reportedly tackled the gunman and took the gun from his hands. The man was restrained until police arrived and took him into custody. The victim was taken to the hospital and treated for non-life-threatening injuries, and eventually released.

Why So Many Patterns?

You know, it’s funny. My dad could add four-digit numbers in his head. I can’t add two and two. That is why I find it very difficult to play more than a six-on Bingo card or to remember all the possible winning combinations.

I would like to take this month’s column to make a STRONG PLEA to Bingo managers to re-think the number of patterns that can produce a winner. Even though I LOVE the way Bingo is handled in my old grade school in Indiana–you remember, the place where I first played Bingo in 1957–I think they have far too many possible winning combinations.

So, my point is that there is a temptation to assume that in Bingo halls where you can either buy paper or an electronic machine, that the hall makes the games so confusing that people opt to spend more money than they planned in order to buy a machine. There is one hall in southern California where the numbers are called so quickly and the winning patterns so complicated that few CAN successfully play paper. I mentioned that to the Bingo manager. His reply was: “Buy a machine!” I got the message. I never went back.

I do, though, love the addition of FOUR CORNERS as a winning combination. Far too few halls, though, have that as a winning pattern. So, the bottom line is: Unless your hall’s management dictates that the winning combinations on paper be so complicated that people are forced to buy a machine, then…lighten up!

I would think there are a lot of other people who, like me, have trouble keeping track of anything but simple Bingo patterns. I would assume that I likely have won several times in the past, but didn’t realize it. This all reminds me of a woman who used to play five six-on cards at a hall in Las Vegas and never daubed any card, until she had a winner. She kept all the patterns in her head. I nearly fainted the first time I saw her do that.

Now, I know that some of you reading this are saying: “Hey, Bob, you are simply a player. I am a Bingo expert. I know how to design the games.” My answer to that is: “When was the last time you sat and talked to the average player? How often do you get feedback?”

So, what do you think? Let me know at: [email protected]. And, for heaven’s sake, don’t be timid about telling the Bingo manager what’s wrong…as well as what’s RIGHT. If you don’t like the patterns, say so. If you can’t stand the smoke, say so. But, don’t expect many changes.

Q: When is the live version of West Side Story going to be on TV, and which network will air it? I’ve loved all the Broadway shows they’ve redone, especially Sound of Music and Jesus Christ Superstar. — G.P.

A: The remake of West Side Story isn’t going to be a live TV musical. Instead it will be a feature film, much like how Chicago and Les Miserables were reimagined for the big screen.

One reason why the new West Side Story is highly anticipated is because Academy Award-winning director Steven Spielberg will direct and produce the film. He and screenwriter Tony Kushner have taken a lot of time to ensure the musical does justice to the original 1961 film, and that it also earns the approval of the Puerto Rican community. According to Deadline, Spielberg and his team have been meeting with Hispanic heritage and advocacy groups, and also met with students and professors from the University of Puerto Rico.

They’ve also found their Maria. After auditioning more than 30,000 applicants, 17-year-old high school student Rachel Zegler from New Jersey will play the lead. Her world is about to change as she joins Ansel Elgort (Baby Driver) as Tony, and Broadway actors David Alvarez, Ariana DeBose and Josh Andre Rivera as Bernardo, Anita and Chino, respectively. Filming is set to begin this year.

Q: You recently addressed someone leaving a dog out in the cold. Your answer was great, except that I wonder about putting a warm vest on the dog. It is my understanding that dogs have two layers of skin with air in between, which helps heat their body and keep them warm. When you add a coat or vest, it presses down on the air pocket and causes them to be colder. Am I wrong?

A: Well, while dogs’ skin does help regulate their temperature, their fur plays a much bigger role in insulating them from the cold. You’re probably thinking of a dog’s double-layered winter coat, where air between the thick undercoat and the top fur helps regulate body temperature.

Some breeds of dog have much thicker undercoats. Most of us have seen pictures or video of sled dogs, who rarely wear coats while working or at the end of the day. Their bodies generate plenty of heat while they’re active, and their undercoat insulates them from the cold when they’re at rest. They’re also acclimated to their outdoor environment.

Some other dogs don’t do well at all in below-freezing temperatures — some are small and short-haired, or they’re in poor health, or very young, or are not accustomed to spending long periods outside.

The most important factor in deciding what your dog needs is you. For a 20-minute walk outside, most healthy dogs don’t need a coat. However, if your dog gets cold quickly or appears to be suffering even after a short time outside, it’s worth trying a well-fitted vest or sweater.

Insuring a Good Hand

A friend of mine was watching me play blackjack in a casino. I was playing heads-up against the dealer in a double-deck game. He didn’t say much to me while I was playing other than to give me an “atta boy” when I beat the dealer, or offer condolences when the dealer pulled a miracle draw to beat me.

After about forty-five minutes of playing, we broke for lunch. My friend is a typical casual blackjack player and he queried me about some of the insurance bets that I made. “How come you sometimes insured your 20s and other times you didn’t, and why did you insure your 7? I always thought you’re supposed to insure your good hands and not your bad hands?” I proceeded to explain to him the following.

When you make the insurance bet, you are betting on the dealer’s hand, not your hand. Specifically, you are betting that the dealer has a ten-value card in the hole for a blackjack. Insurance is a bad bet, I told him, but it’s an even worse bet when you are holding a pair of 10s rather than a weak hand that contains no tens. I asked him, “Can you see why?”

He still had a confused look on his face, so I continued. If your hand contains two 10s, you’ve taken out of play two of the very cards that you are betting that the dealer has, making the odds worse compared to your holding a hand that contained no 10s. The light bulb finally went on in his hand.

“OK,” he said, “Now I understand why it’s worse to insure a 20 rather than a 7 but how come you sometimes insured your 20?”

I went on to explain that the reason the insurance bet, per se, is a bad bet for non-counters is because you’re getting paid 2-1 on a bet that has greater than 2-1 odds against winning. But, if you were tracking the cards as they were played, which I was, insurance becomes a profitable play when the number of 10s in the remaining decks is greater than half the number of non-10s. Card-counting systems will alert you when this situation occurs, which is why the insurance bet can be profitable for card counters regardless of what hand they happen to be holding.

“Oh,” he said, “So it’s not whether you have a good hand like 20 that determines whether you make the insurance bet, but rather if the remaining cards are loaded with 10s. I guess I should stop insuring my good hands until I learn card counting.” I finally smiled and said, “Now you’ve got it!”
