by Charles S. North
Atthis timeof year, I alwayslike to look back and takestock of our Chamber,
and look ahead to the plans wehave for the next 12months.
It’s satisfying forme to recall allour successes in 2012, including:
• A full slate of high-profileevents, such as one of the bestBalloon Festivals of recentmemory and our very popularBusiness Expo in Fishkill
• All the ribbon cuttings weperformed to celebrate new busi-nesses and significant milestones
• The accomplishments ofour Chamber Foundation, whichawarded more than $48,000 inscholarships this past year
• Innovations such as onlineribbon cuttings, where we pro-duced multimedia presentationsfor those members who mightnot necessarily have places ofbusinesses to visit
• Strong advocacy and theaccess we gave our members toyour elected officials
•The fine contributions of ourWorkforce Development Center
But while it’s rewarding tolook back on 2012, it’s time tolook ahead to 2013. We’ll dojust that at our January ContactBreakfast and Annual Meeting, where I will give the State of theChamber speech.
There will be plenty of news
and information shared on themorning of January 16, butsuffice it to say: the state of ourChamber is as strong as ever.We have plans for bigger andbetter events, many informativeeducational seminars, vibrantcommittees and even moremember services.
We also will be unveilingthe new design of our websitein January. You are going to loveit – it’s so easy to use, interactive, searchable, connected to all oursocial networks, full of picturesand video, and clean navigation.I can’t wait for you to see it!
And of this that we haveplanned is in service of you.
I’ll say it again: The state ofour Chamber is strong, and thatis a testament to our members, friends and partners in the vari-ous municipalities of DutchessCounty, local government, andthe terrific staff with whom Iwork on a daily basis.
We are looking forward to agreat 2013, and I want to wish youand your families a very happy, safe, and prosperous new year!
Sincerely,
Charles S. NorthPresident & CEO

Protecting your business from disaster
Meteorologists have a verydifficult job. There are somany tiny things that af-
fect such large changes in theweather, who would ever want the task of pre-dicting what Mother Nature was go-ing to throw out next? As some areasare still recovering from HurricaneSandy, we all continue to hear storiesabout home owners and businessowners who really didn’t think thisstorm would have been responsiblefor some of the devastation it caused.
What about your business? Areyou prepared to take on a natural di-saster? Statistics show that evenwith-out Mother Nature’s help, one out ofthree servers will fail in a year. Typi-cally this is due to human error butthat can equate to $150,000 in down-timeafter a system failure. What costsdo you think Sandy has racked up for
some businesses? Farmore! Now more than ever, preparing
for the worst is a critical businessstrategy, but this can also be a pathtowards growth and prosperity. Here are some steps to consider asyou develop your plan to keep yourbusiness running, no matter what:
• Be Prepared – Develop actionplans that mitigate risk and accen-tuate your strengths and prepareyou for future infrastructure up-grades/modifications
• Build your A-Team – Con-sider intelligence, attitude andaptitude vs. skill, experience and
knowledge when putting together ateam to manage your business con-tinuity concerns and the planninginvolved in taking your infrastruc-ture into the future
• Be Agile – Constantly mea-sure, test and refine your processesand systems for the best possibleoutcomes should tragedy strike
Having a solid business conti-nuity system and plan in place canhave you up and runningwhile otherequipment is being repaired or re-placed to eliminate down-time. Edu-cate yourself on your options and getto work putting them in place.

Many people often ask me,what does The ChamberFoundation do? What is
its purpose?The Chamber Foundation, Inc.
was established to promote educa-tion and training programs for areayouth and professionals with thegoal of enhancing the future of eco-nomic growth in theHudsonValleyregion. The Foundation’s mission isto provide educational opportuni-ties for youth and the workforce, tobuild and strengthen personal andbusiness capacity, develop leader-ship skills and foster a commitmentto community service.
To help carry out this mission,The Chamber Foundation takes ona variety of roles:
Leadership programs:Our leadership programs build
strong individuals, starting at anearly age. The Youth LeadershipProgram, held monthly, is open toall Dutchess County high schoolstudents. Currently over 60 stu-dents are enrolled. The first hourof programming focuses on lead-
ership skills featuring prominentcommunity leaders. In the secondhour, students are split up; juniorsand seniors work on resume build-ing skills/college preparation activ-ities and freshmen and sophomoreswork on Junior Achievement andthe formation of their own com-pany including stock sales, productselection, and sales and marketingtechniques.

class is also required to design andhost a fundraiser for The ChamberFoundation as well as participate in aDay of Service Project. The collabo-ration that comes from both of theseprojects provides invaluable lessonsand insight into leadership, volun-teerism, and project management.
Outside of these two majorprograms, The Chamber Founda-tion continues to build connectionsbetween students and our commu-nity in numerous ways including:College Campus Tours, Spring GolfMentoring and Students MakingConnections. Each of these mini-programs gives select area highschools the opportunity to invitetheir students to connect with lo-cal business professionals and learnabout real word experiences beyondthe classroom. For many, these op-portunities can be remarkable –something that they might not beable to experience otherwise.

A special Thank You to the Staff of the DCRCOCWorkforce DevelopmentCenter; Louise McLoughlin, Cecilia Cook, Susan Grecke, Maryann McKen-zie and Mercy Turugh for picking up and delivering all of the Christmas gifts!
Adopt-A-Family a big successThe Adopt-A-Family Pro-
gram was a huge success in 2012!Twenty-one businesses and
11 families “adopted” 35 localfamilies that otherwise wouldnot have been able to celebrateChristmas this year. Thanks totheir generosity, 87 childrenreceived a visit from Santa.
TheWorkforce DevelopmentCenter would like to thank theorganizers within these orga-nizations and families for theirtireless efforts to coordinate thecollection, wrapping and deliver-ing of the gifts. Their names arelisted next to the business orfamily below. Helping so manyfamilies is a huge undertakingand requires a group effort. Wewould also like to thank the in-dividuals within these businessesand families who took the time
to read the profiles and select anappropriate gift for each of thefamily members.
Many of these businesses andfamilies offer their support yearafter year. Adopt-A-Family is notsimply a hand-out, it is a truly ahand-up. The families who receivethe gift of Christmas for their chil-dren realize that they are not alone. There are people who are rootingfor them to succeed. This year wereceived calls from families whowere helped in the past offering tohelp another family. For us, that istruly going “full circle”.
Thank you so much for yoursupport. It is appreciated.
