WHEN Mary-Jess Leaverland was nineyears old she began singing in theGloucester Cathedral Youth Choir, andthis was just the start of her 12 years inthe spot light. At the age of 15 shetravelled to China for the first time andsang at the opening ceremony of a majorschool where she attracted a lot of localpress coverage. She has been a memberof the National Youth Southern GirlsChoir of Great Britain and has taken partin many competitions and charity events. In 2009 she flew to Nanjing, China aspart of her degree in Music and ChineseStudies at the University of Sheffield. Itwas there that she entered ‘Min XingChang Fan Tian’ (I want to sing to thestars). With her unique voice and graspof the Chinese language, Mary-Jess tookthe competition by storm and the 70million viewers took her to their hearts. Her performances of ‘When YouBelieve’ and ‘Time to Say Goodbye’(both hugely popular songs in China) inthe live final saw her to victory andcemented her position as a serious singerin the Chinese community.

After returning home for Christmas, her story sparked a media frenzy leadingMary-Jess in to the centre of a biddingwar from all the major record andmanagement companies. She eventuallysigned a recording contract with DeccaRecords, Universal, and to JonathanShalit’s ROAR Management. 2010 sawMary-Jess record her debut album‘Shine’ with filmic textures and acontemporary flare – she recorded thestring section from The RoyalPhilharmonic Orchestra at Abbey Roadand worked with some of China’s mostaccomplished musicians to add a touchof the orient. Before ‘Shine’ was released on the 8thof August 2011, Mary-Jess embarked ona 23-date UK tour as Russell Watson’sspecial guest. She has since toured with

Chris and Abby Eaton, performed inTrafalgar Square for Chinese New Yearand sang the Downton Abbey themetune ‘Did I Make the Most of LovingYou?’ with lyrics by the legendary DonBlack. The theme was included in the‘Now that’s what I call Classical’ album, and her second single ‘Glorious’ wasincluded on the Rugby World Cup‘World in Union’ album. She was also invited to sing Faith Hill’s‘There You’ll Be’ on the Band of theH.M. Royal Marines album ‘Summon theHeroes’ due to her family connectionswith the forces. In January 2012, Mary-Jess won both the ‘Album of the Year’award and the ‘Best Newcomer’ award

from classical-crossover.co.uk. Sincethen, not only has she sung to royalty inWindsor Castle, but she has also sung inmemory of pop royalty – she was invitedto sing ‘Don’t Cry Alone’ at Robin Gibb’shouse at the garden party whichfollowed the unveiling of his NationalHeritage Foundation Plaque. One of the highlights of Mary-Jess’career so far was when she performed ashow stopping version of ‘Abide WithMe’ with The Band of The Blues andRoyals at this year’s FA Cup Final inWembley Stadium – in front of a liveaudience of 90,000 people and aworldwide television audience ofpotentially 300 million! In December 2012 she released herlatest single ‘Keep the Flame’ – a coverof Johnny Coppin’s original track. With all this experience at only 22years of age, the future promises to bebright for Mary-Jess.

As 2012 ends and we usher in the New Year, itʼs worthreflecting on whatʼs happened in the last 12 months, and what we can look forward to in the year ahead.2012 was a special year for the country with the

Diamond Jubilee and the Olympics. Indeed, we had thevisit of the Olympic Torch to Gloucester in May, a greatweekend of Jubilee events in June and we evenpresented Prince Edward with the traditional LampreyPie to pass on to his Mother! It was a great year for events with the first Garden

Party at Gloucester Quays, the biggest and best FoodFestival and Victorian Market yet, a reinvigoratedCarnival and our first major History Festival. The new M&S opened in Eastgate Street, leading a

charge of numerous retailers coming to the city despitethe difficult climate. In 2013, Iʼm looking forward to an announcement

(hopefully) confirming Gloucesterʼs status as a host cityfor the Rugby World Cup 2015. The new state of theart cinema will open at Gloucester Quays with a host ofnew restaurants alongside it.The transformation of the Railway Triangle will move

to a new level. And work on the former Gloscat site atGreyfriars will begin in earnest.Hopefully the opening of TK Maxx in the old M&S

Northgate Street store will maintain the momentum of

Leader’s Lifewith Councillor Paul James

Leader of Gloucester City Council

new retailers entering the city. And weʼll have a strongevents programme, including the fourth Tall ShipsFestival, the Mystery Plays and the world-famousThree Choirs Festival. We are fortunate that 2012 ended without a repeat

of the awful floods of 2007. So Iʼm hoping for a dry 2013including, if itʼs not too much to ask, somethingresembling a summer! I hope the economy willcontinue to recover and unemployment stays on adownward path. And if Gloucester Rugby can maintaintheir promising start to the season and make thePremiership play-offs I, and many others in the city, willbe happy! My very best wishes to all Local Answer readers for

a great 2013.

Kingʼs School, Gloucester was founded in 1541 by aproclamation of King Henry VIII – he of the six wives –although there has been a school associated with theCathedral since the 12th Century.Originally charged with the teaching of Greek and Latin, it

had close connections with the Cathedral and was almostsnuffed-out during the Civil Wars 1642-1649 and subsequentreformation. Choristers from the Cathedral joined as pupils inthe 18th Century, when the establishment was first referredto as The Kingʼs School.Situated in the middle of

Gloucester it is basedaround several buildingshousing learning centres forMaths, Art, Music, Designand Science, and itʼs pupilsare aged between 5 and 18.All students are members of“houses” named after two important religious personages:Laud (Dean of Gloucester) and Serlo (Archbishop), and afterWheeler (1684-1712), a former headmaster – recognised asone of the most distinguished educationalists of his day.The school suffered a major fire in 1849 which destroyed

not only a main building, but also the extensive library, builtup by headmaster Wheeler over many years. The Schoolowns Archdeacon Meadow – a gift from the citizens ofGloucester.Amongst its former pupils were the composer and poet Ivor

Gurney, and Frederick William Harvey – the Laureate ofGloucester. Both are famed for their evocative writings onaspects of the Great War.In more modern times, the actor and comedian Simon Pegg

attended The Kingʼs Junior School.

Snooker Academy Memb

Rat Pack Frank’s Back!

Unless you keep abreast of what’s happening in theworld of snooker, you could be forgiven for notknowing about Gloucester’s very own world-classsnooker academy, and it’s recent expansion into anextensive entertainment centre.

The Capital Venue is the brainchild ofentrepreneur businessman Paul Mount whodecided to build the £1.8m complex inmemory of his sister, Kay Suzanne, whodied of breast cancer at the age of 39.Paul said: “We shared a passion forsnooker, so The Capital Venuewas the best way I could bothhonour Kay Suzanne’s memoryand continually raise money forthis wonderful cause.”

Paul gives players – rangingfrom top professionals tocomplete novices – theopportunity to train in Gloucester. He has his own team ofprofessional players – known as the‘Pink Army’ because of their pink-backedwaistcoats – who promote and raisethousands of pounds for the Breast CancerAwareness Campaign. The centre also encouragesyoung apprentices who have been given theopportunity to fulfil their dreams of becomingworld-class players, with the full support andbacking of the academy.

The Capital Venue is the world’s leadingsnooker facility for the top players to train on thevery best SWSA Star equipment. These premiersnooker tables are covered with Strachan clothwhich has been produced right here inGloucestershire at Lodgemore Mills in Stroud since1890, and adds to these prestigious tables beinghighly sought after world-wide.

The academy is now run on a day-to-day basisby Commercial Director Morray Dolan – a world-ranking pool player – who wants to promote the

complex for a wide range ofcommunity entertainment in

addition to snooker. The 400+ seat arena currently hosts four

televised snooker tournaments per year, along withmonthly comedy nights, conferences, and a varietyof musical and other events. The snooker complexprovides three practise rooms, a players lounge(with a wonderful ‘snooker table’ feature bar) anda media centre. New for 2013, the ‘Live Lounge’will soon be announcing visiting artists – so keepchecking the website for the latest news to avoiddisappointment.

Don’t let the fact that this venue is one of thebest in the world put you off from becoming amember. Morray is encouraging local people to usethe facilities – whether they are experiencedplayers or visiting a snooker hall for the first time. You never know, you might cross paths with thelikes of Jimmy White or Ronnie O’Sullivan on theway in!

IS CONDENSATIONIN YOUR HOME?

Keep Warm and Save Money

Condensation affects all of our homes invarying degrees at some time or another, butsome more than others. In buildings this wouldform on cold walls, mirrors, window and doorsurfaces. Thus the cause of condensation is oversaturation of the air; moisture condensing visiblyon relatively cold surfaces. The atmospherearound us is never completely dry and alwayscontains some moisture even though it may notbe visible. In the confined spaces of rooms inour homes, there is great risk of the air to absorbmoisture, from cooking, bathing and evenbreathing. To cut down central heating runningcosts, improved insulation is applied to areaswhere heat loss occurs, namely the roof spaceand walls. To reduce heat loss even further WINDOWS AND DOORS are often draughtproofed, draught proofing your homes may make them much more comfortable.

10%OFFFOR SENIORCITIZENS

By Installing C & L’s energy efficientWindows you can save up to 28% per yearon your heating bills and considerablereduce the condensation if not eradicate itcompletely on your Windows.

IInn tthhee GGaarrddeennwith Julia Smith

I received a lovely early present this Christmas of anindoor seed sprouter. It is a square box with severaltrays, one above the other and a selection of seeds tosprout. You can put it on a window sill or work top andkeep it moist. Apparently the sprouts are really.nutritiousand a tasty addition to salads in the bleak winter months.I have grown mustard and cress on a flannel like mostschool children but this is a league above. I have founda similar one on Amazon called Bergs Biosalad (it isDanish) but there must be lots of different ones around.Remember to recycle your Christmas tree if you have

a real one. The garden centres quite often will takethem, or the local recycling centre or if you have abrown wheelie bin you can lop off the branches and stuffit in there.January is the right time to give wisteria its winter

pruning. Cut back the whippy stems that have grownlast year to two or three buds. This will create flowering‘spurs’ to bloom in the summer. Do take care if you haveto use ladders – make sure the bottom is secure on a flatsurface and don’t lean over to make it unstable. If youhave a vast wisteria that has gone beserk after beingignored for many years it may pay to get in a specialistgardener who can get it back into some semblance oforder and enable you to carry on with it yourself infuture years.Another thing that it is useful to do now is to collect

material for making pea sticks to support plants in yourborders in the summer. Hazel.and birch twigs are thebest ones to use. Pea sticks look much more natural thanusing readymade supports and can be bent and semi-snapped to create the desired shapes. Leave them tiedup in bundles in a corner somewhere outside and putthem in place early on in the season to enable the plantsto grow through them for a natural look. As always if you fancy a change in your garden, be it

just a replanted border or a complete garden design docontact me by mobile or email (details below), or visitmy website. Make this year a special one for yourgarden.

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Paul Spiller feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year

guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’

Cloudy2Clear service the Gloucester, Cheltenham, Stroud & Tewkesbury areas and approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense.

I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Paul a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

www.andorran.co.uk

Roger Downes FCA is a director of Andorran

Itʼs the time of yearwhen we aremaking resolutions, most of which arebroken once thenovelty has wornoff. Rather thanspend too long onmine, I thought Iwould look at someof the things thatmight or might nothappen in the financial world in 2013.I wrote last month about RTI – the massive

change that is going to affect anyone paid asalary in April next year. It requires major faithin HMRCʼs software and I can see either acomputer crash in April or a delay inimplementation as HMRC realises it isnʼtready.IT plays an increasingly large part in our lives

and the rapid expansion of social networkingsites is at the heart of recent developments.Properly used, such sites are exciting andproductive. But they are also a disaster waitingto happen and I predict a major financialscandal next year as a result of misuse ormisbehaviour on one of these sites. It would be easy to be downbeat about the

economy but letʼs hope that the news will bepositive and Iʼll go for growth being recordedevery quarter in 2013.Forecasting what the Chancellor might say

in his Budget this far ahead is fraught withdangers, but he has to keep fuel costs in checkto stop business grinding to a halt. So Iʼll sayno fuel duty rises next year. And finally Sir des Champs wins the

Cheltenham Gold Cup and I collect on myflutter!Whatever is in store for you, may I wish you

a Happy and Prosperous New Year.

I hope you are all enjoying the festive season and havea great New Year’s Eve!

As we move into 2013 I amvery pleased to let you know thatwe have created a larger LocalBeat Team at Barton Street PoliceStation. We have had new officersjoin the team and in next month’sedition I shall introduce them allto you.

We finished 2012 with ourcrime figures on a little bit of a rise- many of you have been leavingyour vehicles insecure at night and opportunist thieveshave been enjoying themselves as a result.

Burglaries have also continued to occur in homesand work places and while we have had somewonderful results recently around arresting some ofour more prolific offenders, I still need your help. Wewill continue to have dark early evenings for the nextfewmonths until the Spring gets here so please considerbuying light timers, leaving lights on and making surethe exterior of your home is secure.

For further advice regarding home security pleasevisit www.gloucestershire.police.uk , where many linkscan be found that are useful.

I am also very, very keen to promoteNeighbourhood Watch (NHW) aswe enter 2013. NHW is notabout being a nosey neighbourand spying on people. It’s aboutcaring about the community youlive in, it’s about caring about eachother and vitally its about showingthe criminals that live amongst us thatwe will NOT tolerate their behaviour.

Finally I would also like your help with one othersubject that is dear to my heart. As you know Ioccasionally get annoyed when some of you don’t reallyhelp yourselves (cars being left unlocked at night forexample). Now I am not any kind of IT expert but Iam aware that certain types of mobile phones, laptopsand tablets have incorporated ‘Find Me’ applications builtwithin them.

Please make sure you turned these applications ONas they can be very helpful in tracking down yourproperty. It does not cost anything and if you areunfortunate enough to be a victim of crime we couldfind the offender very, very quickly because of theseapps. Let’s not give any criminals an unintentional giftthis year!
