FAnS hAvE
good reason
to rejoice.
the beloved
broadcast
journalist
returns to
thIrteen
this month
with Moyers
& Company,
a new weekly
series of compelling and vital conver-
sations about life and the state of
american democracy, featuring some
of the best thinkers of our time.
when Bill Moyers announced that he
was retiring from weekly television and
ending Bill Moyers Journal, there was
a collective cry of despair from public
television viewers around the world. one
thIrteen viewer wrote us to say, “how
can it be? there will be a huge hole in
your news programming if you allow
Bill Moyers Journal to disappear from
your line-up.” another viewer declared,
“losing Bill Moyers is too much. we
count on PBs to keep up us informed in
the sea of trashy and biased reporting.”
and now Bill’s back. each Moyers &
Company broadcast includes enlightening
conversations and an occasional essay
by Moyers on society and government.
a range of scholars, artists, activists,
scientists, philosophers, and newsmakers
bring context, insight, and meaning to
important topics.
“In tumultuous times like these I relish
the company of people who make sense
of the tumult,” Moyers said. “those are
the people I’ll bring to my new series.”
he added that he is returning to his first
love—the conversation of democracy—
“because talk always matters and ideas
always empower, but never more than
at a critical moment like this when all of
us, no matter our politics or ideology,
seem unable to hear, as Joseph
Campbell might put it, ‘the better
angels of our nature.’”
Moyers invites you to join the conver-
sation by visiting the all-new website,
billmoyers.com, a marketplace of ideas
where you can share opinions, watch
video segments from the series, and
enjoy other content encompassing his
body of work in media.
“In the conversation of democracy,”
he said, “everyone’s invited.”

Downton
Abbey with-
drawal: the
wildly popular
Masterpiece
miniseries
returns to thIrteen this month with
a second season filled with drama, ro-
mance, intrigue, and scandals galore.
one of the most successful series in
recent Masterpiece history, Downton
Abbey depicts the intertwined lives of
servants and aristocrats at a country
estate. with a cast including Dame
Maggie smith, elizabeth McGovern, hugh
Bonneville, and many more, Downton
Abbey season 2 airs seven consecutive
sundays at 9 p.m., from January 8 through
february 19, 2012. laura linney hosts.
Downton Abbey’s first season
received six Primetime emmy awards,
including outstanding Miniseries or
Movie and wins for Dame Maggie smith
(supporting actress) and Julian fellowes
(writing). It was a hit with British and
american audiences alike, attracting
new fans and delighting viewers who
have been enjoying Masterpiece since it
premiered on thIrteen—as Masterpiece
Theatre—over 40 years ago.
In season two, the ordered world of
Downton Abbey is shattered with the
eruption of world war I, which affected
every aspect of life in england, acceler-
ating the social change that was already
transforming an age-old system of class
and privilege.
“every character deals with the impact
of the war in a different way,” said
elizabeth McGovern, who plays Cora,
Countess of Grantham. “for some
characters, it creates new opportuni-
ties they never dreamed possible for
themselves. Many of the servants find
that there’s a lot more social flexibility in
the army than there is in their life. other
characters are very undermined, and
obviously there’s a lot of death and
terrible pain…. the life these people
were enjoying is blasted apart.”
