WHATS HAPPENING ON THE EAST END OF LONG ISLAND?By Kay Sullivan

In case you’ve been wondering what’s happening on the east end of Long Island, here’s some information I was given in an interview and subsequent tour with Marvin Yarbrough of Rovan Marine lo-cated in Mercedes, Texas. Rovan Marinie’s business scope includes boardwalks and seawalls and just about anything concerning marine construction here in the RGV. Rovan marine was the construction com-pany responsible for the new “Birding Center” boardwalks and nature areas, so they were a natural fit for a project of this magnitude. The project was started to replace the wetlands being de-stroyed by the 9 mile toll way being built off of Brownsville’s 511 which will tie Hwy 77/83 to the Port of Brownsville. The “550 Toll Way” project is being overseen by the CCRMA. Anderson Columbia is the contrac-tor building the toll way. Rovan Marine has been subcontracted by Anderson Columbia to do the “mitigation” project. The 43 acres being used, formerly owned by the Port of Brownsville, was deeded over to Cameron County for this project. Mr. Freeland has signed an agree-ment that allows Rovan Marine access across his property in exchange for Rovan’s maintaining his road and placing any moved dirt strategi-cally onto Mr. Freeland’s property. As you can see by the aerial view, there are several channels and pond like areas with three connecting inlets to the shipping chan-nel. The only permanent” wall is reinforced with an articulated “cement” mat and will remain as an access road. There are several construction pathways surrounding the ponds that will be removed. Rovan’s construction phase is completed and now the plant-ing is underway. There are strict government guidelines to be followed and inspections will take place every six months to confirm that the plants are surviving. The goal is 50% survival or better. This means several years before the project is considered finished. (Droubht and freezes can make or break these deadlines). There are four types of plants specified for this project. Ro-van’s has already planted over $250,000 sets. Which includes 86,000 Shoal Grass plants (a grass that grows completely underwater); 56,000 Smooth Cord Grass plants (that grow just barely in the water and sorf of looks like grain); 93,000 Black Mangrove trees, (native to this area); and 20,000 Salt Wart (grown in higher marsh areas with puffy yellow-ish-green pods).

Will the general public have access to this wetlands re-serve? As of today, no definite plan has been brought forward by the County. When and if ever happens the County would be responsible for the care and maintenance of the site. For now the site’s success depends entirely on the birds, fish and Mother Nature.
