2011 Welcome Center Highlights
This year began with a celebration of Ronald Reagan’s 100th birth-
day, a huge snow and a great “We Hear You America” contest and a
new tourism director.
The Welcome Center saw over 4,600 guests from 19 coun-
tries and 49 states. We responded to over 52,000 requests for infor-
mation and provided nearly 4,500 welcome bags. The GACVB
jumped in the Facebook arena with a specialized look and continues
to provide information regarding local events and festivals. The
Galesburg Area was promoted at tradeshows, on the radio, on bill-
boards, in news, online and magazine advertising and word of mouth.
The Welcome Center continues to be a mini-museum of
local history. This year a display of Jack Larson was added highlight-
ing his life. Other displays include the Underground Railroad, Ronald
Reagan, Carl Sandburg, Mother Bickerdyke, the railroad and the
Lincoln Douglas Debate.
The GACVB is celebrating the 175th Anniversary of the City
of Galesburg & Knox College with purple or black t-shirts available at
the Welcome Center. Buttons will be available as well. We also carry
Galesburg and Railroad Days t-shirts.
Please stop by and see the displays and pick up travel infor-
mation for Illinois and throughout the Midwest. We are at 2163 E.
Main St., Galesburg.

Obama.
Veterans and transitioning militarymay be encouraged by recentnews about improvements inemployment efforts. On November7th, President Obama announcedthree initiatives aimed at connect-ing veterans with jobs.
The Veterans Opportunity to Work(VOW) Act should give muchneeded assistance to veterans andtransitioning military looking forwork. It should also provide finan-cial incentives for businesses whohire veterans. Read about theVOW Act on the House Committeefor Veterans Affairs website.
The chairperson of the SenateVeterans Affairs Committee, Sen.Daniel Akaka shares his thoughts. He believes that priorities and ben-efits for veterans have expanded inthe past four years. Although, hethinks the expanded benefits havenot kept pace with the needs ofthis country’s 22 million veterans.
The House Committee on VeteransAffairs website has the followingveteran unemployment numbers.
Veterans Out of Work:
Vietnam Era: 217,000 Cold War Era: 266,000 Persian Gulf War Era:
179,000
 Iraq and Afghanistan Era:235,000
Illinois workNet has always madeveterans online resources a priori-ty. The Illinois workNet Veteranspages are designed for Illinois vet-erans. They provide links to all ofthe services andresources available.Veterans in some otherstates do not have thesame access to assis-tance and resources.
The three veterans’ initiatives relyon help from the private sector. They also rely on improvements inservices offered by the govern-ment. The Veteran Gold Card ini-tiative was presented in his August5, 2011 speech at the Navy Yard. The Gold Card is an enhancedversion of the Priority of Serviceavailable at One-Stop Centers.
My Next Move is the second initia-tive. This resource helps veteransrelate their military jobs and skillsto those they will need in civilianjobs. Illinois veterans can get tothe My Next Move site from theworkNet Veterans Resources -Transition Assistance page.
Veterans Job Bank is the third ini-tiative. The purpose of thisresource is to connect veteranswith businesses who wish to hirethem.

IRS ISSUES STANDARD MILEAGE RATES FOR 2012
galesburg.org visitgalesburg.com greda.org 5
The IRS has issued the 2012 optionalstandard mileage rates used to calculatethe deductible costs of operating anautomobile for business, charitable, medical or moving purposes.
Beginning on January 1, 2012, the stan-dard mileage rates for the use of a car(also vans, pickups, or panel trucks) willbe:
55.5 cents per mile for businessmiles driven
23 cents per mile driven formedical or moving purposes
14 cents per mile driven in serv-ice of charitable organizations
The rate for business miles driven isunchanged from the mid-year adjust-ment that became effective on July 1,2011. The medical and moving rate has
been reduced by 0.5 cents per mile.
The standard mileage rate for businessis based on an annual study of the fixedand variable costs of operating an auto-mobile. The rate for medical and mov-ing purposes is based on the variablecosts as determined by the same study, which was conducted by RunzheimerInternational, an independent contractor.
Taxpayers always have the option ofcalculating the actual costs of usingtheir vehicle rather than using the stan-dard mileage rates. A taxpayer may notuse the business standard mileage ratefor a vehicle after using any deprecia-tion method under the ModifiedAccelerated Cost Recovery System(MACRS) or after claiming a Section179 deduction for that vehicle. In addi-
tion, the business standard mileage rate
cannot be used for more than four vehi-
cles simultaneously.
These and other requirements for a tax-
payer to use a standard mileage rate to
calculate the amount of a deductible
business, moving, medical or charitable
expense are in Rev. Proc. 2010-51.
Notice 2012-01 contains the standard
mileage rates, the amount a taxpayer
must use in calculating reductions to
basis for depreciation taken under the
business standard mileage rate, and the
maximum standard automobile cost that
a taxpayer may use in computing the
allowance under a fixed and variable
rate plan. Notices may be found on the
IRS website: www.irs.gov.
