Moving

hat fond memories of sitting pool side one Friday night, with 9 ft. snow banks around

and with a crowd laughing and having a blast! Yes, that was only nine years ago at the NCSG convention in Hershey, Pennsylvania. A few of us helped raise funds at the auction to help pay off the mortgage at Headquarters. It’s a sigh of relief to know this year’s convention will be in central Florida’s sunny Orlando.

What I’m getting at is that it’s time to have some fun with friends and colleagues from all around the country and world. For the older members, it’s time to rekindle friendships and reminisce about that past. For the newer members, time to share and meet other sweeps that enjoy the same trade and similar experiences you face every day.

I’m not saying it won’t be cold here in Florida in February. I remember a few years ago passing out coats to my Northern MIX Group members that thought of the sunny summer Florida weather during their packing. When their planes landed, the temperature was in the 20’s. Orlando has been talked about for many years as a convention city, but it was always feared that attendees would not attend the trade show due to area attractions and distractions. I am hopeful that everyone’s planning to come early or stay late and will be able to take advantage of the discounts that have been given to us. I ask you to remember the reason you are at convention is to learn, socialize, network and gather new strategies to take back to your businesses to improve and set yourself apart from your competition.

As we think about the past and the heritage of the NCSG and its members,

we’re reminded of all the blood, sweat and tears that have taken place over the many years. We continue to lose industry icons and, with that, we lose a part of our history. With that in mind, I have started collecting data – for us to one day be able to create a history book of sorts to document the American Chimney Sweep and the industry’s growth. And even looking further, I dream of a documentary on film to reflect that same.

As more members begin to retire, it reminds us that we are not getting any younger and that the newer members will have to step up and carry the torch we all love and have deep passion for.

Very soon, you will or have already received a survey to fill out. Our hope is that this will be well-received and will help us know your needs, wants and preferences. We want to know about the current realities and evolving dynamics of our environment. What are our current conditions and what’s going on now? What about any current trends and changes in progress or direction? What assumptions can be made about the future? Can we change something in the foreseeable future that would make a big difference? Answers to these questions and more are what we hope to be able to use to adapt our long-range strategic plans to better suit our members and the public. Tecker & O’Neal ‘s working definition of “Strategy” is “An organized response to the environment, based upon a particular set of goals that seeks optimal benefits to the organizations volunteers and clients by: •Buildingonstrengths;and/or•Buildingupweaknesses;

In order to pursue the greatest possible advantage of opportunities and distinguish the organization from others”.

The Governance committee has presented its slate of directors for the upcoming term and election results will soon be announced. Marge Padgitt, Region 6 Director, will be stepping off the board. She is to be commended for her input with the board as a whole, but especially for her expertise with marketing and public relations, and the daunting task of serving as moderator of the NCSG Discussion List. I welcome our new board members and look forward to working with you in the future and serving another year with a good team of directors and staff. I look forward to seeing each of you very soon and wish you the best. SweepslucktoyouandyourfamilyandGodBless.

Editor’sLetter

aaaaary Poppins!” excitedly exclaimed America’s most famous chimney sweep in the classic Disney film by the same name.

Whether you love it or hate it, as a member of the industry you certainly have an opinion of the movie and can anticipate the

reactions of those around you when it’s mentioned. NCSG has members from coast to coast with company names like “Chim Chiminey Sweep”, “Chim Cheree, the Chimney Specialists” and “Chim Chim Ca Chu Chimney Sweep”, we certainly have some dedicated fans of the movie’s soundtrack as well.

Since we’re in Orlando for NCSG Innovation 2012, the opportunity is too good to pass up an appearance by the lady herself, Mary Poppins. She will be joining us for two photo opportunities at the Welcome Reception on the evening ofFebruary15attheBuenaVistaPalace’s 20Seven (it’s on the twenty-seventh floor of the hotel). And while purists will disagree with the approach, we decided to go for it and have a “Top Hat and Tails” theme for the evening.

When looking for an old technical article a few weeks ago in the Sweeping library, I found an article written by Dale Meisinger titled “Top Hat ‘N Tails: To Wear or Not to Wear”. Dated April 1985. The debate has been going strong since well before then, but the article is the most well-versed testament to the debate that I believe I’ve ever read. “Lucky Dale” presents four points in favor of wearing a top hat and one lengthy point against it. (I’ve posted the article online at www.NCSG.org/tophatifyou’dliketoreadthis blast from the past).

Knowing our group, we’ll likely see all variations on the theme, which is perfectly perfect in every way (sorry, couldn’t help myself). So we encourage you to go for it too! Do you have a dusty old top hat that you haven’t worn for a fewdecades?Bringit! It’saTopHatandTails party and we’re going to live it up in a way that our special guest, Mary Poppins, has never imagined.

See you in Orlando!

One of my favorite mentors in this industry was Pete Luter. In one of his classes that I attended he said something like this… “by sweeping and repairing we can make the chimney safer but there is no way that we can say that it is safe”. It’s a line that I use often with my own customers.

Customers commonly put their trust in their local sweep. Many understand that there is a need for regular inspections and maintenance of their chimney. Others may be new to burning wood and are terrified at the thought of having a fire get out of

hand and are seeking reassurance that their chimney is perfectly safe and nothing could ever go wrong. Over the years, I have been asked this question many, many times usually followed by “I was in a house fire as a child” or “Some of my wife’s family died tragically in a house fire”. It is true that at this time of year people rely heavily on theirwoodheatappliancesforheatand/oratmosphere.Unfortunately none of us have x-ray vision and we are unable to see the hidden areas of the fireplace as it relates to the actual construction of the home.

Convention Sense

W hen you attend the NCSG convention, be aware that there is much more going

on than meets the eye. All the planning and preparation through out the year has to be on target, from planning classes

to the food venues. The NCSG staff and volunteers as well as the vendors collectively put in hundreds of hours of hard work to bring the best possible convention experience to you. Then it is up to you to explore the itinerary and plan your visit.

Technical education at the convention includes everything from How to Write a KILLER Report to Lining a Fireplace for an Insert. You may think that the education is available only in the classroom, but you will find that spending a little one-

on-one time networking with a fellow sweep may be almost as rewarding. Two of my favorite things to do at every convention are to meet up with old friends and make new ones. A friend of mine who is one of the most organized people I have ever known, books his hotel and registers early. Rhonda and I always plan time to get together with him at each convention to see the local sights, compare notes on the seminars we have attended and discuss the newest items at the trade show.

Whether you are a first time attendee or have attended the NCSG convention many times there is an educational opportunity for you at convention. In my opinion, if you have passion for this industry then the opportunities are endless. I invite you to attend the NCSG convention this year in Orlando. Attending just makes sense, see you there!

JANUARY 12 SWEEPING 13

Have you ever observed an individual who was classified as an “overnight success”? Perhaps someone you met, a person you saw on the news or a person who simply has made their presence known to others for a positive reason?

All too often this person is called an “overnight success” but when one looks at what the person did to achieve this status, seldom is there the case of this occurring overnight. It happened because they had set their goals and maybe they had themagicmomentoftheirlifewhereitallcametogether.Butyou can bet that there were numerous times that a long arduous path was followed to attain this status of “overnight success”.

As a business owner, success is naturally one of the goals that youhaveplaceduponyourselftoachieve.Butexactlywhatis success? Is it more income that you can spend? Is it being able to afford the things you have always wanted for you and your loved ones? Just what is it that one must attain where the success they wish for actually happens? And how is one classified as a success.

Success is not really having all the money you always wanted, nor is it the materials things in life that you have craved. Success is attained whenyouhavefoundtruehappiness;happiness in your own self-worth and your own position in life. It takes no more than to remember the classic movie “A Christmas Carol”. Was the success in the beginning Scrooge with his money and his real estate holdings, or was it later in the movie when he was with his family unit?

The journey each of us travels in life will have dips, it will have hills, it will have curves and all too often we will come to a stop light or a stop sign that will make us stop, pause, and many times wonder, “Am I on the right road?”, “Will the present path I am on get me to the destination I have set forth, that destination that I call success?” And all too often in our

quest for success, a detour or a roadblock will serve to deter us from our path. All too often many simply lose sight of the path when a bad detour appears, and at times some individuals cannot find the right path again.

Let’sfaceit.Badthingshappeninlife.OneofthesayingsinourindustryforyearshasbeenthephraseBADTHINGSHAPPEN. However in life, roadblocks can come up in the blink of an eye, and many times these can debilitate a person. The trulysuccessfulpersondoesnotlettheseevents;thesebadoccurrences in life take them on a detour from which they cannot get back to their intended route and their intended destination.

A partial success also may block our view of the really important things in life. How many have attained monetary

success but at the same time lost sight of their family relationships? The partial success in this case is when the blinders are put on. A common phrase I use is that they no longer can see the forest as the trees always seem to block the view!

As a coach, it is never the goal to work with a business owner to grow the business and the business owner in the directions I want them to go. Rather my role is to listen and understand the goals and the dreams each of them have. And once this is realized, then a strategy is developed to keep them pointed in the right direction. Perhaps my role is somewhat like a GPS, a reference the business owner looks towards to ensure they have not strayed off the best path to reach the destination they have set.

So as we start the New Year, this is what each of us must do. Each and every year we should reevaluate where we are and if there are new roads to travel. If there are new interstates we can utilize that may save us time, save us fuel andmaybehelpusfindasaferroute.Butitis key, as we evaluate our direction, that we donotlosesightoftheoriginaldestination;this destination being happiness in business andhappinessinourpersonallives.Becausewithout happiness in either of these, success is something that none of us can ever claim as having found and achieved.

In order to achieve success, your biggest asset and your number one cheerleader will be looking back when you look in the mirror. It is up to you to decide if you want to disappoint the person in the mirror. Learn to look at the man in the mirror, likely he has valuable insight to share, you just have to take a few minutes to absorb his excellent advice for you.

With that, I toast you in your quest for success this year and hope that you find the happiness that is the true success of life!

Larger size flues for commercial chimneys can be done with special packages to stabilize, rotate and operate the camera. Chim-Scan® is designed to produce imagery from inside the chimney structure, documenting the chimneys interior general condition or locate where defects may be hidden. Even with strong lights or sunshine, areas may be left unseen. In this day and age, open voids within the chimney can drastically reduce its ability to operate properly, leaving condensates and by products still remaining inside the chimney. ORLANDORegister TODAY to Save!

This year’s convention and trade show will be held under one roof at the Buena Vista Palace across from the Downtown Disney Complex.

Call (866) 397-6516 and mention that you’re with NCSG or use the link at www.NCSG.org to lock in rates starting at $139/night.

Note: There is an additional $10.95 daily resort fee which includes free wi-fi access and parking during your stay.

Don’t delay! The NCSG discounted rate is available only through January 9, 2012.

NCSG POWERS UP ORLANDOWhether you take away one idea or dozens, NCSG Innovation 2012 in Orlando is the place to be to advance your chimney service business. NCSG welcomes Al Levi of Appleseed Consulting as its Innovation 2012 opening keynote speaker. Levi will explain what it takes for everyone at the company to function in a way that allows them to make (and keep) their promises of delivering higher levels of customer service while making a profit.

After his keynote address, Levi will be joined by Bob Ferrari of Flue Season in California as he leads attendees in 7 Power Concepts to Own and Operate a Profitable Business honing in on what the Owner and Managers must do to set the vision for the company and create the steps for attaining that goal. Ferrari shares what was going on prior to his work with Levi and what’s happening there today.

Attendees will also learn How Angie’s List Really Works as NCSG welcomes Mike Rutz of Angie’s List to present the closing keynote session. You know that consumer-driven rating services like Angie’s List are becoming increasingly important to your bottom line. Rutz, Vice President of Advertising for Angie’s List, will be joined by sweeps who have mastered the service in their own markets to share techniques to keep positive customer feedback in front of

your prospective customers. When you attend NCSG Innovation 2012, you will see how the service works both from a service provider standpoint and as a consumer.

In addition to learning about consumer-driven marketing, the convention also offers sessions about the Pros and Cons of Selling Your Company to Your Employees (presented by Joe Spoden, President and Operations Manager of Jack Pixley Sweeps and Masonry) and Russ Dimmitt of Copperfield will help you determine the answer to an important question “Do You Run Your Business or Does Your Business Run You?”

These are just a few of the sessions that will be held in Orlando this February. NCSG will also offer outstanding technical sessions which will help field techs improve skills and learn new techniques. You aren’t going to want to miss this!

If you have an hour, two hours, three hours or more to give of your time, we are in need of help at registration, scanners for the business and technical sessions, runners for the CSIA Auction and various other events. As a volunteer, you’ll help the Guild while helping yourself make connections in the industry. You may give me a call or drop me an email at [email protected] so we can schedule for times you have available.

Several of the member benefit providers have a booth at the NCSG Trade Show. If you are unfamiliar with what they have to offer, stop by and speak with them directly. I also invite you to join me at the NCSG Trade Show booth on Thursday and Friday to find out more about getting the most of your NCSG member benefits. If you’re not a member, I would be happy to discuss with you the benefits of becoming one.

I hope to see you in Orlando, FL!

hat are you waiting for? You can no longer say “Wait til next year.” It is next year…welcome to 2012!

Every year NCSG hosts the largest single gathering of chimney professionals in

thecountry.Betweenthetopleveleducation, theunparalleledprofessional networking and the re-energizing social opportunities, you simply cannot find a more value-packed developmental investment for your business. All you have to do is decide that you and your company are worth it and the journey will provide countless dividends.

The infamous Amelia Earhart said, “The most difficult thing is the decision to act, the rest is merely tenacity. The fears are paper tigers. You can do anything you decide to do. You can act to changeandcontrolyourlife;theprocessisitsownreward.”

From the opening keynote to the closing banquet, NCSG Innovation 2012 will challenge you to re-examine your own business culture, both technically and professionally, to find opportunities to enjoy the benefits of working smarter instead of working harder. In our continuing economy, this has never been more relevant.

NCSG wants to help sweeps everywhere find every success they can. However, in order to recognize where opportunities exist,

you’ve got to allow your mind to open up to the possibilities. That’s where NCSG’s Innovation comes in.

Our keynote address will be delivered by one of the foremost national speakers on the connection between customer service and making a profit, Al Levi. Al brings over 25 years of personal experience in the home service industry having filled each of the roles of technician, owner and manager and has since worked with countless small businesses across the country helping them hone their vision and processes to maximize their success.

On the back end, we are equally excited to welcome Mike Rutz of Angie’s List to our lineup. With the increasing impact of social media and consumer-driven rating systems, organizations like Angie’s List are becoming considerable influences on your bottom line. Mike and a panel of your peers who have benefited from the service in their markets will share techniques to keep your customer feedback positive and provide insight into how these services really work and how turning your customers into true advocates can change your business model overnight.

Whether it’s more effective and efficient business management, exploring new marketing avenues, diversifying your operations, writing better (and easier) reports, planning your own professional exit strategy, or generally exploring ways to work smarter and not harder, you need to join us in Orlando next month. as a necessary evil. In Orlando, NCSG will help you discover opportunities to innovate your entire approach so that you can truly enjoy the business of your business.

Of course, Innovation isn’t restricted to the business office. In fact, technological innovation is probably among the most exciting part of any trade… and chimney sweeping should be no exception. From inspections to complete restorations, and everything in between, some of our industry’s most respected technical innovators will be on hand to share their secrets and encourage you to remain at the topic of your technical game.

In recognition of the technical advances in this trade, our friends at The Chimney Sweep News are proud to continue one of our convention’s newest traditions, the Pete Luter Innovation Awards. Already in its fifth year, this exciting program highlights and recognizes innovative contributions to the trade from manufacturers, suppliers and even sweeps themselves.

Need credits for your certification renewal? Virtually all of our programming offers continuing education credits to apply toward renewal of your CSIA Certified Chimney Sweep® and NFI credentials. We are particularly pleased to continue to offer credits in health and safety that can benefit you personally as well as professionally.

And if you think you already know it all, then how about helping

to boost the quality of the entire industry by sharing your vast knowledge and expertise?

NCSG Innovation is the perfect time to network with your peers from across the country. Discover best practices employed from coast to coast, and share your own personal success stories and innovative ideas. And don’t forget the trade show! Many of the innovative advancements the trade has to show will be on display during the industry’s largest trade show dedicated specifically to chimney service professionals. The NCSG trade show floor is the perfect place to network with your favorite vendors, meet new suppliers, explore new products and services, and discover where the future of our industry is headed.

Where better to renew old friendships and form new ones than at the NCSG convention? How else does a sweep from California get to know what makes a sweep from New York tick…and why? The camaraderie among our industry is like little else that I have ever seen. Not only are there relationships steep in tradition, but never have I seen a group so inviting of those who may be experiencing the convention for the first time.

To top the experience off, we are beyond thrilled to provide the magic and warmth of Orlando, Florida as the backdrop to Innovation 2012. With more to be seen than can ever be seen, Orlando is the perfect escape for you (and your family) in February;andNCSGistheperfectexcuse.

Not long ago I heard John Maxwell reference the following quote in a video blog: “Sad is that day for any person when he or she becomes so absolutely satisfied with the life they are living such that there ceases to be forever beating at the door of their soul a desire to do something and be something greater.” Here’s an opportunity for you to do that next great thing in your life.

Most people tend to overthink the tough decisions, always putting off the “go/no-go”becausetheyneedmoreinformation. In reality they are waiting it out until absolutely all risk has been eliminated, and the true reality is that day will never come. I don’t remember who once told me this, but taking risks is the endeavor that brings the greatest reward in life. So what are you waiting for?

See you in Orlando!
