January HighlightsGreat Performances: From Vienna: The New Year’s Celebration 2011Saturday, January 1 at 8pm and Sunday, January 2 at 1pm

Continuing its longstanding holiday tradition, Great Performances returns to the stately splendor of Vienna’s Musikverein for its 27th annual New Year’s Day celebration with the Vienna Philharmonic. Stage and screen legend Julie Andrews returns with Franz Welser-Möst leading a festive selection of Strauss Family favorites as host to welcome the New Year with public television audiences.

Nature: American EagleSunday, January 2 at 8pm and Monday, January 3 at 1pm

Unique to North America, the bald eagle is the continent’s most recognizable aerial predator, with a shocking white head, electric yellow beak and penetrating eyes. This first-ever HD hour on bald eagles focuses on the drama of the nest. Even in the best of times, it’s a surprisingly tough struggle to maintain a one-ton home and raise chicks until they can hunt on their own. This is an intimate portrait of these majestic raptors’ lives in the wild.

Franz Welser-Möst

American Experience: Robert E. LeeMonday, January 3 at 9pm

Nearly a century and a half after his death, Robert E. Lee, the leading Confederate general of the American Civil War, remains a source of fascination and, for some, veneration. This film examines the life and reputation of the general, whose military successes made him the scourge of the Union and the hero of the Confederacy, and who was elevated to almost god-like status by his admirers after his death.

American Masters: Jeff Bridges: The Dude AbidesWednesday, January 12 at 8pm; Sunday, January 16 at 2:30pm

Called “the most natural and least self-conscious screen actor that has ever lived,” this 2010 Oscar-winning best actor embodies traits far beyond brilliance as an actor. His casual, easy-going air have endeared him to audiences for almost 40 years, starting with The Last Picture Show in 1971, reinforced in Starman in 1984 and the cult classic The Big Lebowski in 1998. After the life-changing role of Bad Blake in Crazy Heart last year, he returns to the screen with Tron Legacy and as Rooster Cogburn in the remake of True Grit, directed by the Coen Brothers.

Pioneers of Television Season TwoTuesday, January 18 and 25 at 8pm; Repeats Wednesday, January 19 and 26 at 1pm

Pioneers of Television returns to WTIU this month, offering the inside stories of these formidable visionaries who recall the fledgling medium they shaped with their creativity, foresight and wisdom. This four-part series once again transports viewers behind-the-scenes for a revealing look at the inception of four of the most popular genres in television: science fiction, westerns, crime dramas and local kids’ TV.

Frontline: Are We Safer?Tuesday, January 18 at 9pm

Frontline launches its new monthly magazine program with three reports, led by “Are We Safer?” In this first story, Pulitzer Prize-winning Washington Post reporter Dana Priest investigates the terrorism-industrial complex that grew up in the wake of 9/11. Against a backdrop of recent mail bomb threats from Al Qaeda in Yemen and growing concerns about homegrown terrorists, Priest explores the growing reach of homeland security, fusion centers, battlefield technologies and data-collecting into the lives of ordinary Americans.

Chautauqua: An American NarrativeMonday, January 31 at 10pm

The Chautauqua Institution is a timeless, idyllic community where artists hone their craft, the greatest thinkers of our time speak their minds, and tens of thousands come to engage in learning and self-improvement. Chautauqua: An American Narrative traces the Institution’s history and impact, and captures its contemporary essence and energy.

No Song is Safe from UsThursdays at 8pm

New York Festival of Song is a recital series that has been delighting audiences and dazzling critics for over two decades. This non-profit concert-giving organization based in Manhattan presents some of the world’s finest vocal talents in high-energy ensemble productions. This month, WFIU premieres No Song is Safe from Us, a thirteen-week series that showcases the song festival that Newsday called “the most reliably excellent musical organization in New York.” NYFOS’ recitals have included a far-ranging repertoire of concert works and theater pieces—everything from Russian art song to Argentine tangos, sixteenth-century lute songs to new music, Brahms to Broadway to the Beatles. Your host is mezzo-soprano Frederica von Stade.

Masterpiece Classic: Downton AbbeyMasterpiece Classic returns this month with a new twist—WTIU will offer a repeat airing on Fridays at 9:30pm.

Created by Oscar-winning writer Julian Fellowes (Gosford Park), Downton Abbey depicts the lives of the noble Crawley family and the staff who serve them, set at their Edwardian country house in 1912. Featuring an all-star cast, including Hugh Bonneville (Masterpiece Classic “Miss Austen Regrets”), Dame Maggie Smith (Harry Potter) and Elizabeth McGovern. Laura Linney hosts.

Episode One Sunday, January 9 at 9pmWhen the Titanic goes down, Lord Grantham loses his immediate heirs and his daughter Mary loses her fiancé, throwing Downton Abbey and its servants into turmoil. The new heir turns out to be Matthew, a lowly lawyer with novel ideas about country life.

Episode Two Sunday, January 16 at 9pmMary entertains three suitors, including a Turkish diplomat whose boldness leads to a surprising event. Downstairs, the shocking former life of Carson, the butler, is unmasked and Bates risks his health to remain valet.

Episode Three Sunday, January 23 at 9pmGrowing into his role as heir, Matthew brings out the bitter rivalry between sisters Mary and Edith. Servants Thomas and O’Brien scheme against Bates, while head housemaid Anna is increasingly attracted to him. Lady Violet’s winning streak in the flower show is threatened.

Episode Four Sunday, January 30 at 9pmThe heir crisis at Downton Abbey takes an unexpected turn. Meanwhile, rumors fly about Mary’s virtue. Her sister Sybil takes a risk in her secret political life. Anna unearths Bates’ mysterious past and O’Brien and Thomas plot their exit strategy.
