With so much in the media

today on bullying, we have to stop and ask ourselves if it’s really anything new. Some of us think bullying only happens to children or teenagers. Unfortunately, no age, gender, social status or religion is exempt from an attack. If you look in the dictionary, the official definition of a bully is an overbearing or intimidating person. Think about it, do you know someone who fits that definition? You might be thinking as far back as the school bully that thought it was cool to beat up the weak kid or spread lies or rumors. Or an old boyfriend or girlfriend that broke your heart, then made sure nobody else showed an interest. Or, you might be thinking of your boss or neighbor. How can we on one hand say we need to stop bullying in our schools, but at the same time run a campaign bashing our opponent? Do you see where this is going? We can all be a bully and not even know it. Today’s society is no stranger to bullying. But today’s society is newly acquainted and on the fast track to technology—those wonderful gadgets that keep us in touch and in the know of everyone and everything around us. Only now we face a new problem, the dark side of social networking. Unlike the epic motion picture “Star Wars” where the dark side wore a cape, our version comes in the form of a flat screen computer with high speed internet or a hand-held device capable of sending hurtful words faster than a speeding bullet. Once the words are written and the “Send” button is pressed, it’s out there to the point of no return. Think back to the days when

you or someone you know was physically or verbally bullied. That person could escape to their home, close the door, and get away from their attacker. Sorry, but that’s not the case anymore. The taunting and teasing can enter your home without your invitation or even opening the door. First things first, if you are a parent,

MONITOR YOUR COMPUTER AND THEIR PHONE. I know putting it in bold is harsh, but it’s that important. Physical abuse is easy to see: bruises, cuts, scrapes, etc. Mental abuse is much harder to recognize. Some signs might include loss of appetite, seclusion, anger, depression, low self-esteem, a sudden change in behavior as in lashing out in a negative way or even bad grades. And no, it’s not something they’ll grow out of. But it will and can change their life forever. As parents we want nothing more than for our children to be safe and happy. We would rather take the abuse than to see them suffer. If that were only possible, we could change the world. Well, maybe we can’t change the outcome for everyone, but we can start at home. Not only do our children learn from example, but guess what, adults do, too. We are creatures of habit, copying what we see and hear. We’re asked to keep a secret, but the person who told us couldn’t. If you can’t say something to someone’s face, don’t say it at all, right? Remember The Golden Rule? Well, that one simple rule sums up bullying perfectly, “Do unto others, as you would have them do unto you.” We can have all the technology in the world, but words are still very powerful. They can be hurtful or helpful. It all depends on you.

The jarring blare of your burglar alarm pierces your ears as you quickly run to punch in your code to

disarm. Then, the monitoring station calls to make sure you’re alright. You give your password and politely explain how you accidentally set it off. Have you ever had this happen? If you answered “yes,” you’re not alone. According to the National Burglar and Fire Alarm Association, 80% of alarm activations are false alarms and 80% of false alarms are caused by user error. Although user error holds the number one spot, there are many factors than can cause an alarm to be activated falsely. Dead or faulty batteries, pet movement, faulty contacts, air vents, rodents, and pests are all contributors to false alarms. This brings us the next scenario, a false activation that happens when you’re not at home. Remember that 80%? Those are the ones currently causing a huge problem for police. If the monitoring station receives no response after calling your home, the police are then notified and dispatched. This valuable time spent responding to a false alarm could be used arresting an intoxicated driver, or responding to a real emergency. And then there is the cost involved: fuel, police salaries, dispatch, and so on. But there is a bright side.

One of the largest projects in the history

of Livingston Parish is the development of Juban

Crossing. The scheduled ground breaking

ceremony that was planned for November 2010,

has been postponed and the new date has yet to

be confirmed.

Juban Crossing is designed with 2.6 million

sq. ft. of commercial space, including 1.2 million

sq. ft. of retail space for shopping according to

Vyron Bernard with Creekstone Companies.

There are also plans for over 1,000 housing units.

A development of this magnitude will increase the

revenue for Livingston Parish, and create essential

jobs. Juban Crossing is expected to create or

support between 2,983 and 4,470 new career

opportunities according to projections made by Dr.

James Richardson, LSU economics professor,

in 2007. Also projected, are annual retail sales of

$625 million. According to Parish President Mike

Grimmer’s office, approximately $900 million in

retail sales leaves Livingston Parish each year

and goes to Baton Rouge and other surrounding

areas. Parish President Mike Grimmer believes

that those dollars should remain in Livingston

Parish.

With the development of Juban Crossing

comes the development of other businesses.

Just as the familiar saying goes: “If you build it,

they will come.“ Livingston Parish is hoping for just that.

Juban Crossing, along with the already developed Bass

Pro Shop, is putting Livingston Parish on the list of things

to do for travelers as well as locals. With a development

such as this, the expansion and improvement of I-12 is

imperative to support the flow of traffic through Livingston

Parish. Although the construction of I-12 may be hectic

for travelers now, it will certainly improve traveling once

complete. Join Livingston Parish in the welcoming of a

grand new development, Juban Crossing, as well as the

opportunities that it brings.

Safety Tip: 10 Check on elderly or dependent neighbors after a storm or power outage. Taking the extra time to ensure their needs are met during severe, winter weather could be a matter of life or death.

“E.T. Phone Home” Remember that notorious line from the 1982 hit movie E.T., The Extraterrestrial? It would certainly take on a new meaning in this day and age. If the little brown alien were to have a Mobile phone, he could connect it directly to his smart home. By the time E.T. made the long trip back, his home could be just the right temperature, the lights would be on to give him a welcome and his favorite television show would be recorded and waiting for him to watch. Technology has certainly evolved over the years. In 1852, the first electro-mechanical burglar alarm system was invented by an American inventor from Boston Massachusetts named Edwin Homes. The alarm he devised was simplistic, but effective. A trip wire was placed around a specific

perimeter, and if it were disturbed, a solenoid would strike a gong making a loud alarming noise. Although his creativity is nothing

compared to today’s inventions, it was the spark that ignited new ideas and developments in the alarm industry. By the 1900’s technology had introduced a security conscious. Trip wires around perimeters were no longer being used and instead typical installations consisted of wire wound along windowsills

and doorframes coupled with conductive lead foil and mechanical or magnetic switches laced with thin wire.

From the early inventions to now, technology has soared with new advancements in the world of home and business security. Electronic key pads mounted on a wall next to a door have taken the place of hanging wires and gadgets. Motion detectors and surveillance

cameras are in constant demand. With these and other new advances on the rise, we can only guess at what’s to come. As security alarm technology advanced, so did the invention of the telephone. In 1876 a Scottish-born inventor, named Alexander Graham Bell became the first to receive a patent for his device,

the telephone. By the end of 1878, only two short years later, there were over ten thousand telephones in service. Also in 1878, came the introduction of the manual switch board that allowed many phones to be connected through single exchange. By the 1960’s, the switchboards became extinct and the digital telephone was introduced using an analog network for transmission. As the technology with telephones was evolving, the cellular telephone was being designed. In 1973, Martin Cooper, a scientist working for Motorola, made the first cellular phone call using a portable handset. With this, the cellular phone was born. With today’s technology, you can do much more than just make a phone call with your cellular phone. The majority of new phones that are being created are designed to offer the user many different features. Take the popular IPhone for example. The world of technology is held in the palm of your hand. Some of the features the IPhone offers are: camera, calculator, internet connection, email retrieval, alarm clock and voice recorder.

IPod’s can bring you into the world of music for your listening pleasure or movie watching. They can be used as a notebook, and they have the ability to download thousands of applications for entertainment and information. For decades, alarm systems and home telephone service have worked hand in hand insuring the safety of its users. Alarm systems are designed to, when activated, contact the monitoring station via your home telephone. But with the increase of cellular use, some residents saw the need to cancel their home service and now rely solely on cell phones. The security alarm industry met their demand by offering cellular monitoring. Now, no matter how your phone service is obtained, monitoring your security system will never be a problem. Did you know that you have the ability to control your alarm system right from the palm of your hand? Through Home Automation, and your smart phone, you can operate your outdoor lighting, surveillance cameras, adjust the thermostat on your heating and air conditioning unit, lock and unlock your doors,

view surveillance video, open and close your blinds, power your television on and off, and much more. These features are provided to you by your security alarm company and delivered to the palm of your hand via your smart phone. People have long used computers to take advantage of some of the same functions. However, with these advanced security applications, a homeowner can

Safety Tip: 12 Freeze Warning? For an affordable way to protect your pipes, wrap them with layers of old newspaper. Cover the newspaper with plastic to keep out moisture. Let your faucets drip to avoid freezing.

Needed Ingredients:• 3 1/2 ounces almond flour, • 1/3 cup granular Splenda • 1/8 teaspoon salt• 1/4 cup cold butter, small cubes• 1/2 teaspoon baking powder• 1/4 teaspoon baking soda• 1/3 cup sour cream• 2 tablespoons heavy cream• 1 teaspoon vanilla• 1 egg• 3 ounces cream cheese• 2 tablespoons granular Splenda• 1/8 teaspoon almond extract• 1 egg white• 1/3 cup sugar free raspberry jam • 3/4 ounce sliced almonds

PERIODONTAL DISEASES AWARENESSPeriodontal diseases are most often progressive-left untreated, the condition often becomes worse. If the doctor does determine that gum disease is present, it is important to get a deeper cleaning done. If untreated too long, it can affect a person’s health and well-being. It has been shown that gum disease has correlations to stroke, heart disease, and even an unborn child with a mother that has gum disease.

Some of the symptoms include:• Bleeding Gums: healthy gums will not

bleed when you brush or floss your teeth.

• Loose or Shifting: teeth come loose as the bacteria below the gum line eats away at the bone that holds the teeth in place.

• Receding Gums• Puffy, Red Gums: healthy gums are

tight and pink.• Halitosis: bad breath caused by the

bacteria in the gums.• Presence of Pus: sign of infection

be anywhere and take advantage of these wireless security alarm features with the touch of a single button on their smart phone screen. Technology has certainly evolved and today, the possibilities of what you can do from the palm of your hand are astronomical. Imagine this. You have loaded the children into your vehicle and you pull out the driveway headed to school. You’re almost to the school when you remember that you forgot to lock your door and set the alarm. There isn’t enough time for you to go back to your house and still get to your job on time. So, you pick up your smart phone and with the click of just a few buttons, you can lock your door and set your alarm system without having to even step foot on your property. Just to make sure that someone wasn’t snooping around after you left, you check your surveillance video to have piece of mind. How easy and convenient is that? TogetherWeCan Put A “FREEZE” On Winter FiresJust a few words of thanks,It is my sincere wish that everyone had a safe and wonderful holiday season. Christmas this year was very special for me and my family. It was this year that we were blessed with our newest family member, Addilyn (Addi) Nicole Rogillio. She is the first born child

for our daughter and son-in-law, and our first granddaughter. They waited so long for their prayers to be answered to have a child of their own. It was in April of 2010 that the good Lord above heard their prayers and delivered to them a beautiful healthy baby girl. I give thanks to God for my beautiful family and all the blessing he has bestowed on me and my family. Safety Tip: 16 Dry, chapped lips can be painful. Try this home remedy: Rub honey on lips, let dry and coat with vaseline. Also using a humidifier in your home will keep the air moist and it prevent lips from getting dry.

PETWinter Safety

Feed your pet a little extra when it’s cold. Pets need extra calories to produce energy during cold weather.

Plenty of fresh water is essential during cold weather to avoid pet dehydration. Warm up the water and add a little honey or a bouillon cube to encourage your pet to drink. Chicken noodle soup is great and most pets enjoy a bowl every now and then.

Groom your dog and cat regularly to remove mats. This helps your pet’s hair coat to properly insulate your pet so that he or she can stay warm during cold weather spells.

Store antifreeze in tightly closed containers, kept high up out of paw reach in secured cabinets.

Visit your Vet to be sure your dogs and cats are healthy! Pets, like people, are more susceptible to health issues in cold weather.

Car engines are a favorite for many outdoor cats who enjoy curling up for the evening near warm car engines. Before starting your car this winter, take a quick look under your hood and/or honk your horn, just to be sure no unexpected feline automobile friends decided to spend the night with you.

PREVENTING Frozen Pipes

1. Locate and insulate pipes most susceptible to freezing, typically those near outer walls, in crawl spaces or in the attic.

2. Wrap pipes with heat tape (UL approved).

3. Seal any leaks that allow cold air inside where pipes are located.

4. Disconnect garden hoses and shut off and drain water from pipes leading to outside faucets to reduce the chance of freezing in the short span of pipe just inside the house.

1. Let hot and cold water trickle at night from a faucet on an outside wall.

2. Open cabinet doors to allow more heat to get to un-insulated pipes under a sink or appliance near an outer wall.

3. Make sure the heat is left on and is set no lower than 55 degrees.

4. If you plan to be away, have someone check your house daily to make sure the heat is still on to prevent freezing pipes.

1. Make sure you and your family know how to shut off the water, in case pipes burst. Stopping the water flow will minimize the damage to your home. Call a plumber and contact your insurance agent.

2. Never try to thaw a pipe with an open flame or torch.

3. Always be careful of the potential for electric shock in and around standing water.

NEWSA LOOK BEHIND THE SHIELD

If a crime has taken place and you know any information about the crime or criminal please contact Crime Stoppers at 344-STOP (7867). Crime Stoppers offers cash rewards ranging from $50.00 to $2500.00, depending on the severity of the crime, to callers that information resulting in an arrest, indictment of an individual, or the recovery of stolen property and/or narcotics. There are three major essentials that are needed to make Crime Stoppers a successful organization: the media, the police, and you.

It all begins with you… You, as a member of the community, are the foundation of the organization. You, the supporter, join Crime Stoppers at public events and other fund raising activities in an attempt to raise funds to continue their efforts. You, a member of the public, create the Board of Directors made of twenty-five volunteers who carry the responsibility of operating this non-profit organization. You, the concerned citizen, call Crime Stoppers with valuable information leading to the indictment of criminals and the recovery of stolen property. Ten, two letter words that will forever change your life: “If it is to be, it is up to me.” Citizens have been afraid to assist in the fight against crime for too long. Join Rusty Howard and the Crime Stoppers of today in making communities a safer place to live. Nothing is more important than the safety of you and the ones you love.

CRIME PREVENTION, TO CRIME CONVICTIONCertified Alarms is pleased to announce that Rusty Howard, owner of Certified Alarms, recently became the newest member on the Board of Directors for Crime Stoppers. Rusty has spent his entire career dedicated to helping people keep themselves, their families, their homes, and their business safe from burglary and invasion. All over South Louisiana there are people who know and trust Rusty because of his dedication to the crime prevention industry. Serving on the Board of Directors for Crime Stoppers, gives him the opportunity to further his involvement in the fight against crime.

Although we wish it were the case, all crime can not be prevented. That’s where Crime Stoppers comes into play. Crime Stoppers is a non-profit organization that was formed in 1982 by business leaders and concerned citizens whose sole purpose was to address the number one issue in communities, “CRIME.” They cover nine parishes in Louisiana: Ascension, East Baton Rouge, West Baton Rouge, East Feliciana, West Feliciana, Iberville, Livingston, Point Coupee, and St. Helena. People tend to not get involved if a crime is committed because of apathy and fear of retaliation that they may receive from the criminal if they should be used as a witness. Crime Stoppers offers a solution by providing a 24 hour hotline to call that gives concerned citizens anonymity. To insure that all callers remain anonymous, a Crime Stoppers code number is given to each caller. Crime Stoppers will never ask that callers reveal their identity or testify in court. This gives those concerned citizens the ability to get involved in helping make our communities a safer place to live without fear.

COMPANY OVERVIEW Officer Russell Kiger (Source: Baton Rouge Police Department)

In April 2010, off-duty officer, Russell Kiger, with the Baton Rouge Police Department, was involved in a fatal accident on Interstate 10 near Gross Tete, Louisiana. Officer Kiger was a two year veteran with the Baton Rouge Police Department and a former Deputy of the Livingston Parish Sheriff’s Office.

On November 23, 2010, Certified Alarms met with Officer Kiger’s wife and family to introduce the new Fallen Police Officer Program in honor of fallen Police Officers such as Kiger. The program provides the immediate families of fallen officers with a free, residential security system. The owners of Certified Alarms, Rusty and Jan Howard, say this program is their way of giving back to the families of the men and women who risk their life everyday protecting and serving the community.

Officer Kiger’s wife, Mistie, stated, “When Certified Alarm approached me about the Fallen Police Officer Program, I felt so honored. It was such an amazing feeling to hear there was a business wanting to recognize the men and woman who serve the community by offering this program to their families. It was nice to know that my husband’s years of service were appreciated.”

For more information about the Fallen Police Officer Program, or to refer a family of a fallen officer, please contact Certified Alarms at 225-928-STOP (7867) or visit online at www.certifiedalarms.com.
