We will have Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament every Friday beginning with Mass at 7:30 am and ending with Benediction at 12:00 pm. We will continue with our Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament on First Fridays beginning at the 7:30 am Mass, Benediction at 12:00 pm, and Adoration until the 5:00 pm Mass.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

The cause of church unity is commended to Christians for prayer and action every year around this time. This week is not so much to focus on the many divisions

within the Christian family, but on bonds of faith and mission. Even though Chris-tians have always shown an inclination

to fracture, spin off, and mutate into new expressions, recent history shows some new points of convergence and agree-ment. Catholics are more firmly rooted in the word of God, for example, and many Protestants are more likely to

celebrate Communion than in years past. Some denominations are merging and

pooling resources, and people from various traditions are collaborating on

projects. The call of this week is to be mindful of

the diversity of our traditions and customs while treasuring what we hold

in common. The old advice to lighten up is good medicine, because sometimes

our differences are delightful and amusing. If someone says, Let us pray, a Catholic might close the eyes, bow the head and fold hands; a Protestant reach out and clasp hands with the person in

the next chair; and someone belonging to an Orthodox tradition might stand up

with eyes wide open. Each has taken a different path, but the goal is always the same. This is a week not for focusing on the well-worn paths of divergence, but for mutual delight in a common goal.

A VISIBLE GOD We find it difficult to convey ideas to people unless we can actually show them something, demonstrate what we mean. God, who is invisible and truly beyond human understanding, apparently faces the same difficulty. People want to see, not just listen to

an idea. So God gave us Jesus Christ, God made visible in the world.

During these past weeks we have seen how Jesus was revealed as an infant to the shepherds and the magi, and

then began his adult public life at his baptism by John. Today's Gospel reading tells us of his first sign, providing wine for the wedding

guests at Cana. Of course, even Jesus, God made

visible, was not always easily understood in his own day, nor is he

even now. So we have to ponder what we see: the poverty and simplicity of his birth, his humility and openness before John the Baptist, his kindness

and compassion toward people in their ordinary problems, such as

running short of wine at a wedding. Yet it is in coming to know Jesus that

UN DIOS VISIBLE Nos resulta difícil transmitir ideas a la gente a menos que le mostremos algo,

que le ilustremos lo que queremos decir. Dios, que es invisible y verdaderamente más allá del

entendimiento humano, aparentemente tiene la misma dificultad. La gente

quiere ver, no solamente quiere escuchar una idea. Por eso Dios nos

dio a Jesucristo, Dios hecho visible en el mundo.

En las semanas recientes hemos visto cómo al nacer Jesús es mostrado a los pastores y a los Reyes Magos, y luego empezó su vida pública en su bautismo

con Juan. El Evangelio de hoy nos habla de su primer signo , que es

proveer vino para los invitados a la boda en Caná.

Por supuesto, hasta a Jesús, que es Dios hecho visible, no siempre se le entendía en su tiempo y ni siquiera

ahora. Por lo tanto, tenemos que considerar lo que vemos: la pobreza y

simplicidad de su nacimiento, su humildad y franqueza ante Juan

Bautista, su amabilidad y compasión hacia las personas en sus problemas ordinarios, como la falta de vino en una boda. Pero al conocer a Jesús

Mời Chúa đến nhà

Những ngày tháng cuối năm các đám cưới đua nhau tổ chức. Mùa cưới rộ lên làm cho mùa đông bớt vẻ ảm đạm tiêu điều. Đám cưới nào thường cũng vui. Trong đám cưới người ta chỉ nói chuyện vui. Nhưng niềm vui kéo dài được bao lâu? Những lời chúc trăm năm hạnh phúc có thật sự đem hạnh phúc đến cho đôi tân hôn và làm cho họ hạnh phúc suốt đời không? Nhìn vào thực trạng đời sống gia đình hôm nay, ta thấy có được hạnh phúc gia đình là một điều rất khó, hạnh phúc trăm năm thì lại càng khó lắm.

Đám cưới Cana cũng suýt lâm vào cảnh bế tắc. Tiệc đang nửa chừng thì hết rượu. Hết rượu là một bất trắc không ngờ. Trong gia đình, những bất trắc có thể đưa đến bất đồng. Bất đồng dễ đưa tới bất hoà. Đã bất hoà thì đường đến bất hạnh không xa.

Việc thiếu rượu của gia đình Cana nói lên những thiếu thốn của gia đình chúng ta. Có những thiếu thốn về vật chất: cơm không đủ ăn, áo không đủ mặc, thiếu thốn tiền cho con đi học, thiếu thốn thuốc men khi bệnh tật. Có những thiếu thốn về tinh thần: thiếu quan tâm chăm sóc lẫn nhau, thiếu khuyên bảo dạy dỗ con cháu, thiếu kính trọng trong đối xử, thiếu tế nhị trong lời nói. Nhưng trầm trọng nhất là những thiếu thốn về đời sống đạo đức: thiếu đức tin, thiếu lòng đạo đức sốt sắng, thiếu công bằng bác ái, thiếu trách nhiệm duy trì đời sống đức tin trong gia đình.

Đời sống gia đình lúc đầu rất vui, nhưng sau đó, nếu không khéo gìn giữ sẽ trở nên nhạt nhẽo như nước lã. Nhạt nhẽo vì tình nghĩa phai dần. Nhạt nhẽo vì những bổn phận nặng nề, nhàm chán. Nhạt nhẽo vì những khuyết điểm không tránh được của mọi người.

Những thiếu thốn và những nhạt nhẽo ấy hầu như vượt ngoài khả năng giải quyết của ta, nên ai cần mời Chúa đến nhà để Chúa cứu gia đình khỏi sự tan vỡ, sụp đổ. Thế nhưng mời Chúa đến không phải là tổ chức làm phép nhà cho long trọng, ăn tân gia cho linh đình. Mời Chúa đến không phải chỉ là làm bàn thờ cho đẹp, treo thật nhiều ảnh tượng. Muốn mời Chúa đến, việc đầu tiên cần thiết là phải làm theo ý Chúa. Như Đức Mẹ dạy các gia nhân: "Người bảo gì thì phải làm theo". Nhờ làm theo lời Chúa mà gia đình Cana thoát khỏi cảnh xấu hổ, hạnh phúc gia đình được bền vững.

Gia đình muốn sống trong vui tươi, muốn giữ vững được hạnh phúc hãy làm theo Lời Chúa. Đọc Phúc Âm, học hỏi và đem ra thực hành. Để Lời Chúa hướng dẫn mọi lời ăn tiếng nói của mình. Để Lời Chúa soi sáng những suy nghĩ của mình. Để Lời Chúa điều khiển mọi việc làm của mình. Lộc Xuân mà chúng ta rút được trong ngày Tết phải là châm ngôn hướng dẫn toàn bộ đời sống gia đình trong suốt năm mới này.

Sống theo Lời Chúa, gia đình sẽ được Chúa dẫn dắt vượt qua những thiếu thốn. Sống với Chúa, hạnh phúc gia đình sẽ luôn nồng nàn tươi mới như chất rượu ngon. Sống trung thành kết hiệp với Chúa, gia đình sẽ được Chúa đưa vào dự bữa tiệc cưới trên trời, lúc đó chàng rể đích thật là Đức Kitô sẽ cho ta nếm thử rượu tuyệt ngon trên thiên đàng, đó là hạnh phúc không bao giờ tàn phai.

Tuần cầu nguyện cho sự hiệp nhất các tín hữu Kitô (18-25 tháng 1) đã có từ hơn 100 năm nay do sáng kiến của mục sư Anh giáo Paul Wattson, sau này trở thành một linh mục Công giáo. Từ 50 năm nay, chủ đề và các văn bản Kinh thánh dùng trong tuần lễ này do một nhóm làm việc chung thuộc Hội đồng Tòa thánh hiệp nhất các tín hữu Kitô và Ủy ban Đức tin và Hiến chế thuộc Hội đồng đại kết các Giáo hội Kitô ở Genève cùng soạn thảo. Chủ đề năm nay là ”Các ngươi hãy cố gắng trở thành người công chính đích thực” (Đệ nhị luật 16, 18-20). Đại hội giới trẻ thế giới (World Youth Day) sẽ diễn ra tại Panama từ 22—27 tháng 1 này. Chủ đề của đại hội là “Xin hãy làm cho con theo như lời ngài,” vang vọng lại lời Trinh nữ Maria khi được truyền tin về việc Ngài sẽ mang thai và sinh Con Đấng Tối Cao.
