New Year Resolutions have been made (and perhaps already broken), but now it’s time perhaps for us to turn our attention to the other Community Service activities that we carry out. December was a relatively quiet time for District activities involving the DG Team, but it gave the opportunity to be more involved with our Club activities. I know Christmas is a very busy time for Clubs and sometimes a period is required to re-charge the batteries, but it may be a time for planning the future events that will take place over the remainder of the year. Perhaps it can be the time to organise the dates for your Club will carry out the collections for Diabetes UK and Marie Curie Cancer Care or plan an event to raise funds for LCIF projects. How about a Fund Raising event around Easter with Easter Eggs or Easter Bunny’s as the theme, or how about starting to plan for your clubs involvement in the Centennial Celebrations. The Challenge is to encourage Lions around the world to Serve 100 million people by our Centennial in 2017 (2017 is not long away). Have members in your Club signed up to help at the Cerebral Palsy World Games or thought about making a donation to Water Aid or LIBRA? The turn of the year also reminds us about Membership (half year dues are required) so why not consider a Membership or PR Event, I know that some Zones are already planning to attend the Lincolnshire Show and Derbyshire Show. We now have the ‘Lions in Your Community’ booklet that we can use to show the world what we do as Lions in the Community, so there are now no excuses to let the best kept secret out the bag, if the public see what we do then I am sure they will want to be part of it. Please don’t forget the way to recruit new members is to ask them – Just Ask. It is not too long now until March and our District Convention, which this year is taking place at The Oaklands Hotel, Laceby, near Grimsby. Convention Newsletters and Registration Forms have been sent out, so I would encourage you all to try and attend. The Convention Committee set up by Glanford and Lindsey Lions have been working hard in the planning to make this a memorable Convention for all those attending. Looking through the diary, I note that the District activities start again with Club Visits, Council of Governors Meeting and the Young Ambassador District Final – which I am really looking forward to. Please remember if you want me to come to your Charter or any other event please contact me as soon as possible: my diary for 2015 is rapidly filling!! As always I would like to say a big THANK YOU for your continuing service within the community in the name Lions, and remember - Together Everyone Achieves More.

Please consider how YOU may be able to support Jane in her appeal

District Sight Officer Lion Paulbacks Guide Dogs Appeal

With his responsibility for promoting Lions Sight projects in 105E District Officer Lion Paul Whitworth is fullybacking the DG’s Wife’s Appeal to support Guide Dogs.Lion Paul says... ‘If you’ve not already organised an event to raise funds for this verydeserving cause perhaps now is the time to consider it. Local dignitaries and Guide Dogsowners and personnel are available and willing to be involved in your fund raising, youjust need to ask’.He then added, ‘Perhaps it’s wishful thinking to anticipate the District could raise the£27,000 it takes to train a puppy (over a 20 month period) to become a confident GuideDog. However, we could still do amazing things and provide the funding for a goodportion of this’.These comments were made by Lion Paul as he provided Update E with an an overviewof the District’s activities in Sight related areas. About these other activities he writes:

‘Collections of used spectacles continue to go well throughout the District. If your Club would like to participate in this simple but effective way of providing much needed assistance you can obtain more information by visiting the Chichester Lions website. The Sight Savers project at Korle Bu Ghana, in conjunction with Moorfields Eye hospital, is now nearing completion. People are needlessly going blind in Ghana and West Africa because there are not enough eye specialists. Funds are still needed to maintain training and equipment. In this project, as with many others...

as a team we really can make a difference to an individuals quality of life . Sight posters , pull up banners and information packs are available for use by all clubs.’

105E Sight OfficerLion Paul Whitworth

Dear members of the Lions family...

I hope you all had a lovely Christmas and I hope we all have a Happy, Healthy New Year, who knows what2015 will bring.

We were lucky enough to visit two Christmas Markets in December, the Brigg Lions put on a superb eventthe market place was packed full and everyone appeared to be having a good time, my nieces and mumcertainly did.

It was our first visit to the Christmas Market in Barton upon Humber which the Barton Lions attended. We had a lovely time, tried their mulled wine and I received a whopping cheque from Lion President Tonyon behalf of Barton Lions for Guide Dogs. No ifs, no buts, no fuss not even a photo but a huge Thank You.

I am getting ready for the next couple of busy months and trying to exercise off all the mince pies eatenin December, so time to get the trainers out.

Best wishes to you all....

UPDATE ‘E’ - January 2015: Page 3

Update ‘E’ readers will recall that we featured an articlein our June edition about Hope for Tomorrow. The charitywas founded by Christine Mills who lost her husband,David, to cancer. Whilst he was undergoing chemotherapy

SUPPORTING Hope for tomorrow...

The charity, Hope For Tomorrow, has recently benefited from asplendid donation of £1,000thanks to Spalding Lions Club. Most of the money was raisedthrough the Club’s annual60/70’s Disco. Rosa Woodley,The Charity’s Head of Events, waspresent at a recent Club meetingto receive the cheque.

they had to travel many miles making their experience even more stressful. Christine had the foresight torealise that treatment could be brought to patients living in outlying rural areas. The charity was establishedwith the aim of purchasing, equipping and maintaining specialised units to travel to community hospitals. Nowthe South Holland district (which covers the area of Lincolnshire where Spalding is situated) has been earmarkedas a possible location in which a unit could operate.Lion Jim Walker also presented the Charity with a further £100 on behalf of Elaine Ladds. Elaine creates greetingcards and encourages others to join her in this pastime. She asks people to make a donation to her collectionfor charity, always choosing a charity with a connection to cancer in memory of her late father. Lion DeniseWalker , one of Elaine’s regular ‘card makers’, mentioned the Spalding Lions donation to ‘Hope for Tomorrow’and Elaine was keen money from her charity jar to to be given along with the Lions donation.

Skegness Lions Club recently staged a musical event inthe Town’s St. Matthews Church. Well in excess of 100guests were treated to a live performance "Music ofthe night" performed by Trevor Fenton, and KatieMeadows (pictured) along with Ritchie Smith. All areenthusiastic and very talented members of theSkegness Musical Theatre Company.Songs from the musicals were performed during theevening and in addition to the excellent music, guestswere able to partake in refreshments which includedtea, coffee, mince pies and even a glass of wine to getthem in the festive spirit. This is the second time that Skegness Lions have staged

Musical treat

the event and already the Club members have commenced planning for next year's concert.Speaking after the presentation, Lion President Pat Griffiths said, ‘We were absolutely delighted that so manycame to support our musical evening which raised just over £1000. This will of course be used carefully invarious ways to help our work in the community’.

Ref – Lion John Plitsch

Dear Lions and friends

I am writing to thank you for the kind wishes you sent to John while he was ill and for all yourcards of sympathy after he died. Thank you all for braving the wind, rain and miles to attend hisfuneral. I was told the church had never been so full.

Thank you for the generous donations to his chosen charity – The Norfolk Hospice. The funeraldirectors took donations of £1400 and John’s local fishing club organised a memorial matchwhich raised a further £400. I know other people sent their donations directly to the Hospice. The Marie Curie nurses and staff from Tapping House were wonderful. They cared for Johnevery day for the last two weeks he was at home in a hospital bed. They made him comfortableand made sure he was not in pain. They also sent a nurse to stay with him all night so that Icould get some rest. I cannot praise them enough.

I hope that you will forgive me for not writing sooner. I had intended to but never had thestrength of mind to relive the sad experience. I also did not feel able to send Xmas cards to youwith only my signature on them and not John’s. It would have been too upsetting. Instead I havesent a donation to The District Governor’s Wife’s Appeal.

Thank you all again for your kindness and sympathy and I wish you all a Happy and HealthyNew Year.

UPDATE ‘E’ - January 2015: Page 5

Happy New Year to Everyone in District 105E!Its that time when we celebrate the end of the old year and look forward to thenew year. .. But as well as considering what’s in store for 2015 the time is right forus to examine our strategies beyond and that is why we are trying to get all Lionsinvolved in our Together the Future programme."Together the Future" is intended to encourage every club and every single LIONS member in the Districtto put forward their views about the LIONS organisation in the future. It was launched in 2014, but nowin the coming months it will start to have even more relevance.I'm pleased to say that 24 clubs and individual members took up the opportunity to respond to theoriginal request in 2014 to put forward views on how Lions Clubs should respond to social, cultural andtechnological changes. These comments have been distilled, without alteration, into a powerpointpresentation which is on the District Website.

What’s happening now?Action has already been taken on some of the comments made:

IT/Social media Training is now available for anyone in the District who asks for it. The District Secretary is looking at how communications to clubs from the District

can be managed in the most efficient manner for Clubs. A resolution will be put to District Convention that anyone in full time education

under the age of 30 should only pay half District, Multi- District and International dues. A resolution will be put to District Convention that the District dues are not

increased for 2015/16.

What will happen next?Firstly the District team will be taking a further look the responses and we’ll be including further initiativesin the District Plan for 2015/16. Please come along to District Convention in March where I'll be presentingthe Plan...

Your involvement is paramountThere have been some really key comments made about Together the Future by Lions from rightacross our District. I'd very much like the discussion to continue. Let’s all get involved! Here are someof the key points that have been made so far:

Do our Youth projects reflect Youth of today? What new Youth projects could we launch? Are our existing activities old hat? What different events could we champion? Are we viewed as an Old Man's Club? If so what do we do about it? What should our approach be to accepting women as members of LIONS? What is the best way to get involved with Schools and Universities? What is the best way to implement Change in LIONS?

Please think about the points that have been made... These are points that have been highlighted byLions in 105E... BUT - what are your views and opinions? Please let me know!

Whilst on their cruise Lions Robert and Katharine also visitedGibraltar and when they ventured on shore they were sur-prised to find a Gibraltar Lions Tombola stall on the mainstreet. Lion Katharine says... ‘We were delighted to meet upwith Past President Pepe Palmero and Lion Helper Yvonne, who were manning the Tombola Stand. It was obviously verypopular. Lion Robert did buy some tickets but unfortunatelywas not lucky. However we did feel we had supported aworthy cause as the Tombola raises monies for all sorts ofCharities and Good Causes in the Gibraltar Area.

Thanks to the efforts of Notts Derbys Hemlockstone LionsRobert and Katharine Stewart a Lions Friendship Banner nowhangs in place on the Cunard Cruise ship Queen Victoria. As soon as they arrived on board for their December CruiseLions Robert and Katharine sought permission to present theship’s Captain Peter Philpott with the banner. They weredelighted when arrangements were made at an on-boardcocktail party. Now the banner has pride of place in theCaptain’s Office where it will stay for the ship’s forthcomingworldwide cruise...

Thanks to the great generosity of the public Oadby andWigston Lions Christmas collections at Tesco (Wigston)and Sainsburys (Oadby) have been a huge success. LionsClub Members, with a little help from Father Christmas, raised enough money to buy a defibrillator for the FirstResponder team working in the Oadby & Wigston area.At the beginning of December Rick Moughton and TrishBentley of the LIVES first responders organisationvisited a Club Meeting so that they could explain to Lionsmembers how the First Responder system works. This emergency life saving group of volunteers aredispatched by the ambulance service to cardiac arrestand stroke cases in the their area, arriving at thepatient’s side within minutes. This quick response, where minutes count, gives the patient a better chanceof surviving or preventing possible disability. The defibrillator funded by the Lions was delivered onthe 19th December and is already in service helping tosave lives.

Best Christmas Present Ever... LIFE!
