In today’s readings, we are challenged to “hear” and “see” with spiritual ears & eyes.

“Opening the Word” can help prepare us to hear God’s word each Sunday. And Brother Francis can

teach us along with our children to make time to listen to God.

WEATHER ADVISORY Other parishes in Chester County have instituted a policy, that if the local school district is closed or on a delay due to inclement weather, the daily morning Mass is cancelled. In conformity with these parishes, if the Octorara School District is closed or delayed due to inclement weather, the daily Mass at OLC will be cancelled. We want our parishioners to be safe.

OLC-ELC OLC-ELC will be closed tomorrow, January 15, in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. Classes will resume on Tuesday. This Thursday, January 18, we will have a fundraiser at Chuck-e-Cheese in Downingtown. Visit between 3:00-9:00pm and let them know you are with OLC-ELC. Our preschool will receive a portion of the proceeds! Grab your friends and family and let the children burn off some excess energy! Next Saturday, January 20, is our annual Donuts with Dad event at the Schneider Parish Center. Enrolled children will enjoy a story, breakfast treats, and complete a craft together with their special grown up. As a reminder, we follow the Octorara School District for delays and cancellations. Be sure to check our website, Facebook page, or sign up for remind text alerts during inclement weather. OLC-ELC is accepting registrations for the 2018-19 school year. All current preschool and parish fami-lies have the opportunity to register early to secure a spot for their child. Registration will open to the general public in February. Please visit our school website at www.olcelc.com to download a registration form. Please email us at [email protected] with any questions or for more information. We will have an Open House on Sunday, January 28, at 12:30 pm. All are welcome to tour classrooms, meet our teachers and learn about the various programs we offer.

January 14, 2018-The Second Sunday in Ordinary Time Reflection by Rev. Leonard N. Peterson Let’s face facts: some phone calls are annoying, especially when they come at suppertime. You know the type. Somebody trying to sell you something. Or to solicit your opinion. Or to donate to a worthy cause. But other calls are delightful and most welcome. It could be a family member bringing news of a newborn. Or a close friend whom you’ve been waiting for to chat. Or the doctor’s office calling to tell you there is no trace of cancer on your x-ray. There is a quite different kind of call referred to in this weekend’s Scriptures that has nothing to do with phones or phonies or clicking computers. It is a call from God. Right away I can imagine you thinking “What does that kind of thing have to do with me? That’s for saints or holy people! I’m just ‘Joe or Jane Ordinary’ trying to do my best to be a Christian thank you very much.” Well I have some good news that you might be surprised to hear. Each of us has a call from God! He implants that element, if you will, in all His human creatures. He loves us as unique products of His holy imagination. He knows that we will only be truly happy if we fulfill our destiny. His call matches our minds and is in sync with our souls. Its nature is particular to us. It may involve a call to love a certain person for life, for better or for worse until death do you part. It could be a demand for your patience. Or your service. Or any number of other realities. But always linked with a call for your love. Jesus responded fully, better than any of us. As difficult as answering that call was for Him, by His sharing our weak human nature, He did it out of love for us. Hopefully we will be as eager as young Samuel was to listen and then answer when he finally learned after God’s third try that he was being called for a mission of some kind. Now we have an extra layer of difficulty brought on by our ego-centric culture which asks of nearly everything “What’s in it for me?” Or we might just ask the Lord to give our call to somebody else. Here is some apt verse: “There’s a clever young guy named Somebody Else, There’s nothing this guy can’t do. He is busy from morning till way late at night, Just substituting for you. You’re asked to do this or you’re asked to do that And what is your ready reply? Get Somebody Else to do that job, He’ll do it much better than I. So much to do in this weary old world– So much and workers so few, And Somebody Else, all weary and worn, Is still substituting for you. The next time you’re asked to do something worthwhile Just give this ready reply: If Somebody Else can give time and support, My goodness, so can I.” First Reading: I Samuel 3:3b-10, 19 The call of young Samuel highlights the reception of God’s word. God’s will is that Samuel communicate that word to the people. Second Reading: I Corinthians 6:13c-15a, 17-20 Paul teaches that the body is not for immorality, because it is the temple of God. Casual copulation denies the full union of soul and body which is God’s intention for the physical act. Gospel: John 1:35-42 Andrew, responding to Christ’s invitation, brings his brother Simon to Jesus. Jesus then confers the nickname “Rock” (“Peter” in Greek) which describes Peter’s future role in the Church.
