Dear Parishioners and Friends: This Sunday, the Church celebrates the Baptism ofthe Lord. One of the great privileges of priesthoodis administering the Sacrament of Baptism. In theface of the newly baptized we see the Church oftomorrow. The Lord's last words to his discipleson this earth were: "Go, make disciples of allpeoples, and baptize them in the name of theFather, of the Son, of the Holy Spirit". The Churchteaches that the day of our baptism is the mostimportant day of our lives. Why? Why is itnecessary to be baptized? What happens inBaptism? What is it that we hope for fromBaptism? We hope for eternal life for our children. This is the purpose of Baptism. In baptism wereceive the gift of the Holy Spirit, God dwelling inus. In Baptism we become living Tabernacles. Inthe Sacrament, we are united with God. Webelong to God; we are immersed in God. God is nolonger very distant from us. What an awesomereality! We are in God and God is in us. Throughthis sacrament, we live in God’s presence. We arenot only united with God, but we are united withone another. In Baptism we become part of theBody of Christ, the Church. We enter into agathering of friends who never abandons one orthe other, in life or in death because thesecompanions are God's family, which in itself bearsthe promise of eternity. We enter into the Christiancommunity where together we pray not “my father”but “our Father”. This group of friends, this familyof God, will always accompany us, even on daysof suffering and in life's dark nights; it will give usconsolation, comfort and light. Thiscompanionship, this family, will give us words ofeternal life, words of light in response to the greatchallenges of life, and will point out to us the rightpath to take. This group will also offer the usconsolation and comfort and God's love whendeath is at hand, in the dark valley of death. It willgive us friendship; it will give us life. And thesetotally trustworthy companions will neverdisappear. Baptism is a gift, the gift of life. But agift must be accepted, it must be lived out in anopenness to God’s Spirit. In must lived out in thelove of God, in the love of one another. Let uspray on the feast of the Baptism of the Lord for agreater appreciation of the tremendous gift givento us on the day of our Baptism. Father David Nolan

PARISH NEWS / NOTICIAS PARROQUIALES

Baptism of the Lord • January 12th, 2020

Padre David Nolan
