BENEDICT PARISH ST. BRIDGET’S CHURCH· ST. MARY’S CHURCH· ST. MARY’S SCHOOL CALVARY CEMETERY· ST. BRIDGET’S CEMETERY Jesus is a great leader. Jesus is a great teacher. We know these things, but today we have a clear picture of how great these things are for us. We see this in the way in which it came about that he was baptized. Many of you have asked the obvious question: Why did Jesus need to answer a call to a baptism of repentance? Isnt he the one person who didnt need this? To answer this, we remember that baptisms purpose is to incorporate us into the Body of Christ. The forgiveness of sins is an effect of this happening. Jesus shows us how to do this by going first. He leads from the front. He does not tell us to do it. He rather asks us to participate in it with him. Christ is Immanuel. He is with us. Jesus also says in Johns Gospel account that, for their sake do I sanctify myself.Does he need sanctification? Objectively, no, but he does it for us – to model how we are to approach our life together. When we come to Mass, we accept and pray for sanctification, and yes, we do need it, but we sanctify ourselves for service and mission in the world in the same way he modeled it for us. To continue his work, we participate in the life of God himself – given to us through the baptism we share. This is what faith is: our participation in the life of God. Today we can clearly see a problem. We are doing well, all things considered, but we have become remarkably unreasonable. This, oddly enough, has to do with a failure to understand what faith is. Reason is perfected by faith. If everyone suffers from a lack of reason, it may very well be that our lack of faith is the problem. If we looked at faith as participation in Gods life, would we be unreasonable in our encounters with others? Would we lack generosity and patience? Would we ever say an unkind word? I think not. Realizing that through the baptism in which we all participate we become one in Christ, what wouldnt we do for the other? Christ goes first in baptism and goes to the cross before us to show us how to live and to teach us what it means to truly live. If we celebrate this, what challenge could possibly threaten us? Your servant in Our Blessed Lord, Fr. Michael

Mass Requests for 2021: We do apologize for the length of time it is taking to process the overwhelming number of Mass requests we re-ceived. Unfortunately we had to contact people for more info in some cases, which slowed the process. We are very grate-ful for the parishioners who have helped very unselfishly through this process. We thank you for your patience. It is grati-fying to see how our parishioners want to remember their loved ones through our Masses. Thank you, Maureen

The following individuals celebrated the Sacrament of Confirmation with Fr. Michael at St. Mary’s Church on Sat-urday, January 4th:

Kaitlin ELIZABETH Fisher Lauren ELIZABETH Yehl

Brendan JUDE McWilliams What a wonderful way to begin the new year! Fr. Michael recently received delegation from Bishop Matano to cele-brate the Sacrament of Confirmation for three of our young adults who went through the Rite of Christian Initiation (RCIA) process and were to be Confirmed last year at the Easter Vigil. The pandemic may have delayed their celebra-tion for close to a year, but we are excited to announce that last weekend, our 5:30pm Mass attendees were able to wit-ness and share in the wonder of the Sacrament with them as they were sealed with gift of the Holy Spirit. We pray that they will attend faithfully to all that God asks of them, en-rich the Church community with their gifts, and manifest the reign of God in their lives. Congratulations, Elizabeth, Elizabeth, and Jude!

Sacramental Prep—First Penance, First Eucharist Sacramental Prep for First Penance will begin at the end of this month or early February and First Eucharist prep will follow. As with almost everything else, the pandemic has made us rework our plans for preparing for the Sacra-ments and we are currently working on a schedule. Those that have registered will receive more information by Flock-note in the near future. Thank you, as always, for your pa-tience and understanding as we work to provide an enrich-ing and safe Sacramental prep experience for all.

Calling all High School Youth Group Members! We will be having our next meeting on Sunday, January 10 at 7pm via Zoom. The link will be sent by email or you can contact the HS Youth Group leader, Jean-ette Zavislan, at [email protected]. To prepare for the meeting, put your thinking caps on. Our topic will be “soul food”, so what is your favorite kind of comfort food? We will be sharing what these are and also discussing different ways to feed our souls just as we feed our bodies. Also, in prepa-ration for the meeting, try to get creative and create a Zoom background that shares something about yourself. Maybe you have a favorite sports team, maybe you love go-ing to the beach. What brings peace to your souls? Capture that on your Zoom background when you log in for the meet-ing so that we can all see and share what it means to you or why it is important to you. Finally, we will be discussing topics for upcoming meetings which we are hoping you will all help with. What are some themes or topics that you are curious about, topics that you would like to learn more about? We look forward to seeing you via Zoom on Sunday night.

Sacramental Prep—Confirmation: What Have We Been Doing? Confirmation prep has been underway since early Novem-ber and the candidates have worked through the following topics: “Who is the Holy Spirit?”, “What does the Holy Spir-it do for me?”, “Why do I have to go to Mass?”, and “Who’s calling” (holy orders and vocational discernment). The top-ics for January are “Are you talking to me?” (all about pray-er) and “Who is Mary?” So far, we’ve had two Zoom sessions with “guest speak-ers”. In November, Fr. Michael presented on the Holy Spirit and during our December session, Deacon Claude and Sr. Anita Kurowski of the Sisters of St. Joseph reflected on their own vocational discernment. Our next Zoom meeting will be held on January 26 at 7pm and members of the Women’s Prayer Ministry and the Catholic Men’s Group will focus on prayer. The link will be sent via Flocknote and posted to the Google Classroom page prior to the Zoom meeting. Please contact Amy at [email protected] with any questions.

Mark Your Calendars! The Middle School Youth Group will be meeting via Zoom at 7pm on the following dates: January 20, February 10, March 17, April 21, and May 19. Links will be sent via Flocknote prior to each of the meetings. Faith formation ac-tivities to be completed at home are sent out several times per month, also via Flocknote. Contact Sarah at [email protected] with any questions about Middle School Youth Group.

"Keep trying. You're doing great. I'm so proud of you." It feels amazing to hear words like those and to feel loved. As Jesus grew from a boy to a man, he showed he was ready to live for God. At Jesus' baptism, God told Jesus, "You are my own dear Son, and I am pleased with you." God loves you as his child, too.

God, I am so glad you love me.

Show John the path to baptize Jesus.
