Donelson, Ph.D. (Pharmacology) has education, training, and experience concerning the use and effects of drugs, inc luding prescription pharmaceuticals, over- the-counter medications, and chemicals taken for purposes of “recreation” or “intoxication”. In areas of pharmacology and toxicology, he has examined relationships among the presence, concentrations, actions, degrees of effects of drugs, taken alone or in combination, and their influence on human performance. Pharmacology is the medical science concerned with how substances affect the body and how the body deals with those substances. The two main branches of Pharmacology are pharmacodynamics (the action and effects of drugs on the body) and pharmacokinetics (the absorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion of drugs). Pharmacology integrates with and builds on other medical sciences and disciplines, for example, chemistry and biochemistry; endocrinology; anatomy and physiology; neurology; and psychology. Toxicology is a specialized discipline within the broader scope of Pharmacology. Historically, Toxicology concerned poisons, substances that debilitated or killed people, including therapeutic agents taken in excess, as well as other chemicals employed to kill insects and other animals. As modern Chemistry evolved, Toxicology took on a broader focus and assessed exposure to and the toxicity of materials and chemicals in the environment. Concern about alcohol and drugs as substances that could impair driving also increased during the past century. Forensic toxicology focused on the presence and amount of drugs in body fluids, including ranges of concentrations of drugs considered non-toxic. At the same time, pharmacologists became interested in drugs and their toxic effects on vulnerable organs, including the brain. During the past fifty years, the disciplines of Pharmacology and Toxicology have overlapped considerably in subject matter. Dr. Donelson has applied findings of pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic research to questions about the likelihood and severity of adverse drug effects, including those arising from interactions of two or more drugs. He has addressed issues related to the nature and degree of drug effects on the human body and on human behavior. Examples of areas of continued interest include (1) drugs and their role in motor vehicle crashes and other kinds of accidents and (2) associations between drugs and human misbehavior, aggression, and violence. Based on his training and experience, relying as appropriate on relevant findings from scientific and clinical research, Dr. Donelson has testified concerning the likely influence or role of drugs in cases involving accidental injury or death, both in civil and in criminal matters.

Alan C. Donelson, Ph.D. 16531 Cornflower Court Nevada City, California 95959 Telephone: 530 292 3432 / Preferred E-Mail: [email protected] Web Site: http://www.alandonelson.com/ Professional Experience Dr. Donelson has education, training, and experience concerning the use and effects of drugs, including prescription pharmaceuticals, over-the-counter medications, and other licit and illicit substances. In areas of pharmacology and toxicology, he has examined relationships between the presence, concentration, and actions of drugs, taken alone or in combination, including beverage alcohol. Dr. Donelson applies findings of pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic research to questions about the likelihood and severity of adverse drug effects, including those arising from interactions of two or more drugs. He has addressed issues related to the nature and degree of drug effects on the human body and on human behavior, including the role of alcohol and other drugs as causal factors in motor vehicle accidents and collisions.

Dr. Donelson has also engaged the statistical study of motor vehicle crashes, their causes and consequences. He specializes in solving complex problems involving multiple variables, for example, to estimate the relative importance of risk factors – human, vehicular, and environmental. In the area of motor vehicle risk analysis, Dr. Donelson’s investigations have focused on vehicle rollover, post-collision fire, occupant injury, and vehicle crashworthiness. He has also researched the dual role of alcohol as a crash-risk factor as well as an injury-aggravating factor, especially spinal cord injury.

From July 2006 through 2011, Dr. Donelson worked with PrincipiaTM Engineering Services, LLC, as a non-salaried member of staff (http://www.principia-eng.com/index.html). Principia focuses on the fundamental practice of failure analysis and accident reconstruction. Dr. Donelson also served as a Visiting Scholar with the Traffic Safety Center (TSC), University of California, Berkeley (2006-2008). Until April 2005, he was a Principal Scientist with the engineering and scientific consulting firm Exponent Failure Analysis Associates, Inc. (Exponent). Before joining Exponent in 1989, he had years of research experience with the Traffic Injury Research Foundation of Canada (1981–1989), the Highway Safety Research Institute (now, the Transportation Research Institute) at the University of Michigan (1976–1981), and the University of Michigan School of Medicine, Department of Pharmacology (1975–1976). Credentials and Professional Honors Ph.D. (Pharmacology), Indiana University, Bloomington, Indiana, 1976 B.A. (Chemistry), Earlham College, Richmond, Indiana, with Honors, 1969
