He also shared the good news regarding the success of the Pakistan Academy of Engineering’s collaborative work with the Japanese partners on the efficient use of Thar coal in Pakistan. Providing the rationale for the formation of the Outreach Committee, Dr. Shahid Alam stated that there is a gap between policy makers and the engineers. The First Meeting of the Outreach Committee of the Pakistan Academy of Engineering

in his address thanked the Chairman of the Outreach Committee Dr. Shahid Alam and the Secretary of the Outreach Committee Mr. Syed Nadeem Arif, for organizing the first meeting of the Outreach Committee. Elaborating on the Pakistan Academy of Engineering, the President of PAE shared that the Academy is now almost four years old and structured on international lines, and currently affiliated with the International Council of Academies of Engineering and Technological Sciences, Inc. (CAETS). PAE is in the process of seeking regular membership of CAETS. The Council of the Pakistan Academy of Engineering has elected sixteen members as Honorary Fellows out of which nine are CEOs of their own organizations. Describing the origin and structure of the academies, the President opined that as far as Engineering Academies are concerned, United States provides the best model where the government is mandated to consult the academies on scientific and technical issues. All developed countries have academies of engineering. In India it was established in 1984, thus Pakistan is the youngest. Pakistan Engineering Council is a regulatory body and deals with education, consultancy and contractual practice. There are many issues not being addressed by the Pakistan Engineering Council and other professional bodies. Elaborating the objectives of the PAE, the President of PAE informed the participants that Pakistan Academy of Engineering is trying to enhance its outreach and visibility. Unlike developed countries where there are independently constituted bodies that advise the government, Pakistan has no such institution. PAE has created a number of constituent institutes and one of its primary institute is the Institute of Technology Assessment and Transfer (ITAT), and the newly

established one, Institute of Cybersecurity Management (ICSM). Whenever the lawmakers seek advice, these constituent institutes can play their role on demand or suo moto. The academy does not have the capacity to provide all the complex answers to the current issues. However PAE can engage people from the engineering and scientific community in Pakistan and abroad for providing necessary technical inputs and advice. The President invited the participants to visit the PAE website for updated information about its activities and programmes. The President also announced the date and title of the next symposium, titled: “Prospects of Mini Nuclear Power Plants in Pakistan” that will be held on April 28, 2018, Inshallah. Mr. Syed Nadeem Arif, Secretary Outreach Committee thanked the President PAE. In the meeting the participants discussed ways and means to secure consultative status for the Pakistan Academy of Engineering at the national level, jointly with the Pakistan Academy of Sciences. They deliberated on interacting with the legislatures of the National Assembly and Senate of Pakistan. The participants discussed the prioritization of allocation in the Corporate Social Responsibility budgets of the private sector corporations. The role of the Outreach Committee for sponsorship for programmes/events of the Pakistan Academy of Engineering was highlighted. The need to increase visibility among various stakeholders was also emphasized. In the end, the Chairman of the Outreach Committee Dr. Shahid Alam thanked all the participants.
