Prez Sez By: John Thompson

For those of you wondering “Who is the new guy steer-ing this ship we call a club?” The 13 of you who cast a vote in my direction can skip down a couple of para-graphs. If you are one of the 150 or so who thought “John Thompson? Didn’t he coach at Georgetown? When did he become part of the club? I’m not gonna vote for someone who probably had a booster buy his way into the club!”

Well let me tell you a bit about my past. I was born in Reno, Nevada. We will fast forward 16 years. I would-n’t want to bore you. Now I am a very impressionable high school student who has developed a fondness for the Porsche marque. Somehow I was blessed with par-ents who didn’t seem to mind. (Maybe they thought it was better than being involved with girls?) We traveled near-and-far looking for that perfect 356 and basically learned that rust-free meant “all bondo”. By luck, I came across my present driver at the Porsche Dealer in that very town were I was born. I think it was fate. It was my destiny to be the third owner of that little light ivory ’66 912. I drove her during high school. Such fond memories. She treated me well. I like to think I treated her well, too. I left her with my parents when I headed north to Eugene for college. I think they treated her well for the 7 years we were apart. We were finally reunited after my wife and I had built a garage to put her in. It was that year (1999 if memory serves as cor-rect) when I ran into Jon Crisalli at the G.I. Joe’s Car Show. I learned about the local club and began partici-pating. I think it was 2001 that I took over for Jon as Central Chapter Rep. I was at that position until my re-cent coronation. O.K., enough about me, let’s move onto the club.

Did you hear that? That was the sound of us kicking

January / February - 6

off a new year of activities. I must admit, I am a bit out of my element this year. I would usually be frantically planning for our Central Chapter planning meeting and trying to get some near-term events organized, but I have Mike McMahan to thank for stepping up and tak-ing over as the New Central Chapter Representative. As with most administrations, there is a transition pe-riod, but I’ve heard some ideas that Mike has floated around and the Central Chapter looks to have another busy year. Thanks again, Mike.

Anyone from the Southern Chapter looking to gain a title? If Southern Chapter Representative doesn’t float your boat, we can call it something else. We are open to ideas and volunteers.

As I mentioned many-a-times in my Central Chapter re-port, we are looking at ways to help lessen the burden of the Chapter Representatives by having others step up and plan events. I will throw my hat into the ring and say I will do at least one. I have had the idea for an event for a couple of years now and I think this is the year to do it. The basics are: I need to have about 5 people (cars) to step forward for this a super secret event. This event is occurring on September 8th. If you are interested in participating in an event whose style has never been seen before by this club, call and I can fill you in (after signing a nondisclosure form).

I am still not sure what kind of President I will be. A President of the People would be nice. I would like to think history will look back at my tenure and be kind. Maybe remembering me as the guy who stepped in and continued the long saga of the Cascade Region. If my lack of basketball skills is never brought up, even bet-ter. See you on the road. John

Holiday Party Article by: Dave Hamann

What a great way to spend an evening! Talking and dining with 49 old and new friends. That’s what we got to do on January 13th at the Applegate River Lodge. It was the Southern Chapters an-nual Welcome the New Year party and we had a ball. The weather had been pretty miserable, hadn’t been above freezing for a week at our house, so we were a little worried that some folks might not be able to make it. But they did! Even if they had to get out the 4 wheel drive pickup to get out of their driveway like Ken & Pat Ebert did. Neither rain, nor sleet… you

get the idea. Joanna, our hostess, did a wonderful job just like last year. The salmon was succulent and the steaks were big and tender. They grill them both over a red oak fire and the taste is won-derful.

January / February - 8

After dinner I gave a quick rundown of the Club’s finan-cial status, good, membership numbers, approx 148 to-tal, and once again pleaded my case for help running our events this year. It worked! Before we left we had some great discussions with 5 different folks who are willing to give it a go. Thanks guys.

Then we got into the door prize give-away. We really had a great time this year as our dealerships, advertisers and various places that we had visited on tours really came through.

January / February - 9

I’d like to thank Carrera Motors and Sunset Im-ports for stepping up big time. Also Joanna at the lodge, Special-ized Foreign, Cary’s of Oregon and Troon Vineyards. Between them we were able to hand out 21 door

prizes this year with a total outlay from the Club of a whopping $25! Such a deal. And believe me, when we an-nounced that Troy & Heidi Olivadoti won the first prize of a 24 hour 2007Cayman rental from Carrera motors the place went nuts! It really was a great way to end the party.

By 9:30 folks were say-ing their goodbyes with promises of seeing eve-ryone at the planning meeting on 2/17.

It was a fun evening with a great group of people and we can’t wait till Spring so we can all get together again.

From the Editor By: John Le Bel

Thanks to all who participated in the planning process for this years schedule. We’ve got some great events with some favorites we’ve done before and several new, very unique ones. We’ll start the season in March with a tour through the valley and great luncheon at Jacksonville Inn. In May John & Helen Gritsch have arranged for us to visit the Brammo Motorsports facility in Ashland where the Ariel Atom is manufactured. Although this vehicle defies description you can consider it either a minimal-ists approach to auto design or a barely street legal race car. See their web site at www.Brammo.com for a tantalizing preview. In October we have an autocross event at Jackson County Sports Park’s go kart track. After trying to get your best time in your daily driver you’ll have the op-portunity to try it again in a vehicle this track was de-signed for. A racing go kart. These aren’t your Family Fun Center type karts but the real, full race karts capa-ble of speeds in excess of 60 mph, although it feels much faster with your rear end 2 inches off the ground! Although you’ve got about 10% of the horsepower available in your daily driver you might be surprised to find your lap times are quicker in these diminutive rac-ing machines. In November we’ll end the season with a Tech Session at Specialized Foreign Car Service. Plan to attend as many of these events as you can and please bring your camera to take those great photos you can submit for publication in the newsletter!

Can you identify this month’s car? This car was manufactured in Haifa Israel from 1961 to 1968. Only 379 were made with 144 sold in the US, the rest sold in western Europe and Israel. It used a Ford Consul 4 cylinder 1700cc engine.
