Everyday, they would smell the revolting and repulsive smell of horse manure, body odor, animals, and smokes. They ate poor foods like stew potatoes, army surplus (dry hotdogs, kidneys, spam). This is what the Japanese-Americans experienced in internment camps. Usually in a time of war, aliens are put away in an internment camp. Happy New Year Roadrunners! Hope you all enjoyed a magical holiday season and happily welcomed in 2011! Here in PTA, we are excitedly “getting in gear” for lots of fun, upcoming events. I’m sometimes asked…….How does the FSD GATE program and second grade testing process for GATE identification work? FULLERTON SCHOOL DISTRICT GATE Mission Statement In the Fullerton School District we believe all students, including the gifted and talented, develop to their full potential only when their special strengths are identified and supported throughout their lives. We are therefore committed to providing differentiated, in-depth, complex, and accelerated opportunities for our GATE students. GATE is an acronym for “Gifted and Talented Education”. California uses this term to refer to programs specifically designed to meet the special learning needs of gifted students. These programs have been approved by the California Department of Education and are funded by the state legislature. The Fullerton School District’s GATE program is currently under a five-year program approval. FSD GATE Program Schools Designated Schools: Acacia, Golden Hill, Hermosa Drive, and Laguna Road GATE Identification: General Intellectual – a student must obtain a total score of 98th percentile or above on a nationally normed cognitive abilities test. Teacher observation of exceptional classroom performance and/or ability, along with observations of characteristics of a gifted child contribute to this identification. Multi-Dimensional – a student must be close to meeting test score criteria in the General Intellectual category. Students are evaluated according to a combination of factors. These include District Benchmarks, intellectual ability, achievement, student portfolio, and observations of gifted characteristics. GATE Testing Nominations: All second grade students currently enrolled in the Fullerton School District will participate in the first round of the screening and identification process. This is done so that all students have an opportunity to display their gifted abilities. Parents who choose to “Opt Out” of this process must be aware that once a child has “Opted Out” they may not be added to the testing list for the remained of the school year. Testing Timeline: The GATE screening process for enrolled second grade students begins in the fall of each year. During the month of September, parents will have the opportunity to decline testing for their child. The identification process begins in the months of October & November, when all students in the second grade across the district will be taking a general abilities test to begin the screening process for the gifted and talented program (GATE). Another exciting opportunity is coming up at the end of January (22nd). Laguna Road is offering the yearʼs first Saturday School Opportunity Attendance Recovery (SSOAR) Program. What is that, you might ask? If your child has missed a day of school so far this school year, he/she is eligible for this Saturday School Program, which allows your child to attend school on Saturday (from 8a-12:15p) and receive “credit” for the day of school missed. (For example…if your child has missed 1 day of school and he/she attends a Saturday school program, their attendance record will then reflect “0” days of school missed). This also allows the school / district to reclaim state funds for the day that your child missed (Remember…the school/district gets paid according to the # of kids attending school on a daily basis. Any missed day = $ lost). This program is open to Kinder-6th grade students and believe me, they have FUN! Some kids in the past have wanted to attend the program even if they have not missed a day of school!! Sign-ups are NOW and in fact, if you have not signed your child up yet…you need to contact the school office ASAP!!! If you havenʼt done so yet…stop by Mr. Youslingʼs classroom and give him a big pat on the back! He was voted “Teacher of the Year” by the Laguna Road Staff!! Definitely well deserved! Mr. Yousling is ALWAYS ready to help ANYONE, ANYTIME and ANYWHERE! We are thrilled for him and look forward to the awardʼs formal presentation on January 26th, 7pm. The Roadrunner Awards will also be presented this evening to various parents / volunteers who have gone above and beyond to help the school, students and staff. And our own Laguna Road School Choir will be performing! Come out and show your support for your fellow Roadrunners! And congratulations are also in order for all of our Reflections participants who were moved on to the Council level (21 total). The awards ceremony is coming up this week and 9 of our Roadrunners placed either 3rd, 2nd or 1st place!!! 2 of our Roadrunners placed 1st and are moving on to District level! We are soo proud of all of our participants! Great work Roadrunners! We, in PTA, are working hard to make each PTA dollar really count. We are looking, in the next few months, to be making a contribution towards a specific school project – one that benefits all Laguna Road Students. Possibly a promethium board for the schoolʼs tech lab? So far this year, we have contributed towards PE equipment that all students will enjoy. I have been approached many times from individuals who would like to contribute but to a specific item/project. We are looking to formulate a “Laguna Road School Wish List” and will send out a notice once itʼs put together. This will allow all Roadrunner families to see what/where $ is needed. Finally….a headʼs up on a BIG, important upcoming Laguna Road Event…..The School Carnival! Mark your calendars for the afternoon/evening of Friday, March 25th! AND…..there is a possibility that the carnival and “International Day” are going to merge into a FABULOUS DAY OF FUN AND FOOD!! Possibly a talent show with an opportunity for your child to do an “International” dance of their choice?!?! Stay tuned for more details! The carnival proceeds go to the Laguna Road SOS Foundation….a foundation that is responsible for funding some of the current Laguna Road programs, staff, & equipment. Given the districtʼs/schoolʼs budget crisis, it is IMPERATIVE that we all pitch together and make this as successful a carnival as possible. Continued on Page 4 >>

Feel free to invite friends/neighbors…the more the merrier!! Also, a big thank you to Natalie Benda and the PE teachers for a FANTASTIC Turkey Trot Fundraiser that brought in over $15,000!! And a big thank you to all of you Roadrunner families for sponsoring your child and volunteering your time on the day of the event to cheer on the kids! It was a lot of fun! If you have not yet joined our Laguna Road PTA family…ITʼS NOT TOO LATE!! Just contact the office for a membership envelope….weʼd be happy to have you aboard! Also…donʼt forget to sign up spouses and family members. Kids themselves, cannot be members, but other adults in the family can! Program books, membership cards and PTA LegoLand coupons have been distributed already…if you are a PTA member and have not received one, please let us know! Also…we are forming a PTA nominating committee to fill some of the open positions for next year. Please let me know if you are interested in serving on this committee, OR if you are interested in a position for next year! There are many committee chairperson positions that do not require a lot of time on your part…so please donʼt let time be a deterrent! If you are interested in helping out, but donʼt have a lot of time to do so, please let us know! We will find something that works for you!! Any little bit helps…really!! Our next PTA meeting is on Tuesday, February 8th at 8:45am in the school library. Come by and check out a meeting…what better way to spend your time than to get involved in your childʼs school? Look forward to seeing you there!! Also….a reminder for all of you AWESOME volunteers…. Remember to sign in at the office and record your hours! We DO ADD UP ALL OF THE VOLUNTEER HOURS AND TURN IT IN TO THE COUNCIL!! So even if you do work at home…log those hours in!! Take care Roadrunners! Happy January 2011!!

PTA President’s Message (continued from page 3)

Are you missing something … Like a lunch box, jacket, sweater, coat, or sweatshirt? Well you might want to try looking for it in the Laguna Road lost and found bin located outside of the Custodian’s room between room 15 and room 12. The bin is overflowing with some really nice clothes. Stop by and visit the lost and found bin to see if anything in it belongs to you. At the end of each school year anything left in the bin is donated to charity. Happy Hunting!!!

Principal’s Message (continued from page 2) Students scoring in the 83rd percentile or above on the first test go on to the second round of testing held in January/February of the school year. The results of the first test determine who will move on to the second round of testing. The GATE identification Team will use both tests, teacher input, and District exams to determine GATE identification. In May the Identification and Placement Team at each school meets to discuss the tested students and their potential placement for the following year. Parents will be notified of the testing results after the Identification and Placement meetings and prior to the end of the school year. It is anticipated that results of the GATE identification process will be available in the spring of the school year. Qualifying for Participation Students who qualify for GATE may attend one of the GATE designated schools or remain at their home school. Students who do not meet established criteria may be re-evaluated in future grade levels, for up to three test cycles. If you have any further questions please do not hesitate to contact me at school. (714) 447-7725.

Outdoor Science Camp Update December’s Holiday Boutique 2010

The Holiday Boutique was a hit! Thank you so much for all your hard work. If you didn’t get to check it out, our kids went all out. We had everything from scarves, ornaments, signs, toys, pens, pencils, erasers, hot Cheetos, candy and yes...even man-cave stuff! We had such a wide variety of items and it made such a difference. For those of you that have multiple children at Laguna, let me tell you, this was a big money maker for your children. A couple of our children made above and beyond the monies needed for this year, a big congratulation to those kids.

To those of you that helped, thank you. Thank you to those who made the items and all who tagged the items. Thank you to the room moms who marked all the tags and helped with the sign ups for the volunteers. Thank you to the volunteers who worked so very hard in setting up, clean-up, being there everyday to organize items and help us keep track. Thank you to all those who helped count everyday. This boutique would not have happened with out each and every volunteer. Thank you to those who showed up everyday to help. I can’t tell you how very blessed we were to have all the help. Thanks to our wonderful accounting team. They had quite a bit to count. I believe they are working on getting everyone an update on the students’ accounts.

We had a great time at the Boutique this year. Thanks again!

2nd Annual Laguna Road PTA TURKEY TROT A GREAT SUCCESS! Gobble, Gobble…this year’s turkey trot was filled with fun and excitement. The turkey trot is always a fun event as PTA gets an opportunity to encourage exercise and healthy living along with raising money for our school. Plus its’ just fun! It started with the Kinders trotting on a warm morning. They ran and ran giving it their all. Many of them did over 10 laps! Next up, were the 1st - 6th graders. Due to the unusually high heat, their running day had to be postponed two weeks. That didn’t faze them a bit. They came out ready to run and run they did. The teachers matched their enthusiasm by cheering them on and running with them. We followed up in December by handing out prizes. Carson from Mrs. Nicholes class won the top fundraiser prize…an iPod Nano. The top fundraising classroom was Mrs. Nicholes. Continued on Page 7 >>

2nd Annual Laguna Road PTA TURKEY TROT (Continued from page 6) Miss Kim won the teacher spirit award and a $40 gift certificate to C & M School Supply. Several other prizes were handed out including gift certificates, remote control helicopters, games and more. For the $100+ winners, lunch was provided to them so they could have an extra special treat. Throughout both Turkey Trot days, we had so many parent volunteers…over 75 and we couldn’t have done it without you. A big thank you to them and to the PE team, Mrs. Ochoa, Mrs. Palmer and Mrs. Brewer who worked to help the event. Another big thank you to our parents who counted all the donations. Collectively Laguna Road families raised over $17,000! What a fantastic job everyone. The turkey trot was a great success!
