Wickford Art Association’s Featured Juried Artist Member February 2017 Janet Tobin Painting for me is an expression of a variety of memories and past experiences. I grew up near the water and have spent most of my adult life watching the ocean – its’ tides, storms and extensive sea life, therefore much of my work reflects those images. I also love traveling and have incorporated those memoires of European cities, villages and towns into some pieces as well as images of the mountains, valleys and rock formations of the western United States. My artistic training is limited to a few adult classes at RISD, classes at a local art studio and wonderful instruction from artist Cindy Baron who has inspired me to continue painting and exhibiting. Prior to watercolor instruction, I frequently attended art‐related workshops in areas including tole painting, interior design, card and paper making and have enjoyed these skills in everyday activities. I also must credit my family of artists: my mom, Doris Pearson, who exhibited many years ago in a variety of shows throughout New England including Wickford; my uncle Walter Youngberg, a designer for Gorham Silver and RISD graduate; my cousin Deborah Lindsley, a local freelance artist and my grandfather, Eric Youngberg, an oil painter, jewelry designer and tool and die maker who taught me as a little girl to appreciate the artistry in a variety of mediums. Since retiring from a career as a Speech/Language Pathologist where I did use art and hands‐on creative activities to enhance language development in young children, I have had time to pursue painting and hope to continue to express reflections of my memories through my artwork.
