Jane Austen is one of the most popular and important novelists that England has ever produced. The Grade I listed house at Chawton is where she spent the last eight years of her life and is of international importance as the place where she produced the majority of her mature writing. Following a successful grant award from the Heritage Lottery Fund, HCC Property Services were appointed to provide professional design services for the Trustees of Jane Austens’ House.

A principle aim of the project was to return the rooms in the house back to their earlier period feel by removing the ancillary accommodation required to run the museum. The main house has been upgraded and refurbished. Work included the sympathetic replacement of mechanical and electrical services. On the ground floor, the room believed to have been Jane Austen’s kitchen has been restored with a contemporary range, furniture and utensils. The original stone paved floor, removed decades ago but later discovered in the grounds nearby, has been carefully relaid.

The removal of ancillary accommodation from within the main house and re-organisation of other parts of the site meant that new educational facilities had to be provided. Located in the historic garden, the new building has been carefully designed and orientated to fit neatly within the site, with external finishes that blend with the surrounding buildings.
