APRESENTAÇÂO

A idéia de montar um guia bibliográfico sobre Jane Austen e sua obra

surgiu enquanto eu fazia uma pesquisa para meu Trabalho de Conclusão de

Curso sobre as três principais obras de J.R.R Tolkien. Após procurar em

bibliotecas e livrarias virtuais, percebi que não existem muitos livros, artigos e

trabalhos acadêmicos em português sobre Tolkien ou estudando suas obras. A

pesquisa por referências bibliográficas acontecia na mesma medida em que a

escrita do meu trabalho evoluía. Muitos dos trabalhos sobre Tolkien faziam

referências a J.K. Rowling; alguns destes, por sua vez, citavam trabalhos de

Jane Austen. Eu anotava as referências que encontrava, em inglês e

português, mesmo quando não as utilizava; quando percebi a quantidade de

referências que já havia conseguido, comecei a esboçar o guia. Com a ajuda

do editor de imagens do site Polyvore, comecei a montar as primeiras

ilustrações planejadas para a capa. Espero que este guia bibliográfico sobre

Jane Austen e sua obra possa auxiliar as futuras pesquisas sobre a grande

escritora.

INTRODUÇÃO

Jane Austen nasceu em 1775, em Steventon, Hamphire, na Inglaterra.

Ela era a sétima filha do reverendo George Austen e de Cassandra Leigh.

Jane e Cassandra, sua irmão mais velha, eram as únicas mulheres entre os

oito irmãos. Ambas freqüentaram um internato em Reading, mas a maior parte

de sua educação foi feita no âmbito familiar.

O pai delas possuía uma ampla biblioteca, e todos na família eram

ávidos leitores. Os Austen também faziam representações teatrais na reitoria

de Stenventon. Entre 1795 e 1799 começou a redigir as primeiras versões dos

romances que se publicariam sob os nomes de Razão e Sensibilidade, Orgulho

e Preconceito e Abadia de Northanger.

Em 1803, Jane Austen conseguiu vender seu romance, Abadia de

Northanger, por 10 libras esterlinas, apesar de o livro ter sido publicado

somente 14 anos depois. Com a morte de seu pai, Jane, Cassandra e sua mãe

ficaram em situação econômica precária e elas passaram a depender dos

irmãos. As três viveram em Southampton e em Chawton, onde Jane retomou

suas atividades literárias.

Razão e Sensibilidade foi publicado anonimamente em 1811 e teve

algumas críticas favoráveis. Dois anos depois, seu novo livro Orgulho e

Preconceito foi publicado. A identidade da autora começou a difundir-se com a

popularidade desta obra e no ano seguinte surgiu Mansfield Park. Nos anos

seguintes, surgiu Emma e Persuasão, mas um mal estar fez com que Jane

deixasse Sandition de lado.

Para receber tratamento médico foi levada a Winchester, onde faleceu

em 18 de julho de 1817. Em testamento, legou tudo o que tinha para sua irmã

Cassandra. Na época, não se sabia a causa de sua morte; hoje, considera-se

que foi pela Doença de Addison. Jane Austen está enterrada na Catedral de

Winchester.
