Sammamish Symphonywww.sammamishsymphony.org

“Glowing and Radiant”: Dvorak’s SixthThe different instrumental groups of the orchestra are spotlighted in the concert’s first half: a fanfare for brass (Dukas), a symphony for wind instruments (Gounod), a delectable suite for strings (Holst), and a remarkable vehicle for solo marimba (Hovhaness). The orchestra is “reassembled” after intermission for Antonin Dvořák’s festive and enchanting Symphony No. 6. Matthew Kocmieroski is the virtuoso marimba soloist in Alan Hovhaness’ haunting Fantasy on Japanese Woodprints.

Romantic ExoticaFour composers evoke lands and eras, other than their own, in this colorful and alluring program. Johann Strauss, Jr. demonstrates his flair for writing music in something other than 3/4 time in his Egyptian March. Camille Saint-Saëns’ gifts for beguiling melodies and rich orchestration are amply displayed in the Bacchanale from his opera Samson and Delilah. Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov’s most popular work, the grand symphonic poem Scheherazade, caps this musical voyage to distant realms and times. Flutist Sandra Saathoff is the stylish soloist in Franz Doppler’s Fantaisie Pastorale Hongroise.

Park AmenitiesHuman ServicesThe City of Sammamish aims to ensure that all its residents can receive needed human services. To do that, Sammamish uses some of its local tax money to fund specific programs and all of them are carefully selected through a competitive process. These city-supported programs offer services that are affordable (low cost, adjusted according to income, or free) and accessible. Programs typically receive support from the city for two calendar years. Every even year the City accepts proposals from non-profit agencies seeking funding support in the next biennium budget. Contact Allison Gubata, Community Services Coordinator, at 425-295-0579 or [email protected] if you have any questions.

VolunteerTrail stewardsAfter training with Washington Trails Association, Trail Stewards volunteer their time building trails and leading volunteer projects for the City. Trail Stewards have been hard at work building miles of trails and trail structures in Beaver Lake Preserve, Evans Creek Preserve and Big Rock Park! Keep an eye on our Volunteer Page and you can help WTA and our Trail Stewards build new trails and trail structures in Sammamish parks!

Plant StewardsOur Plant Stewards go through the Washington Native Plant Society’s Native Plant Stewardship Program, where they learn about Puget Sound ecology, restoration, urban forestry and are trained in native plant identification and invasive plant management. Upon completion of this program, Stewards volunteer their time developing and executing a restoration project in one of our parks. In previous years, Plant Stewards developed a native plant garden in Lower Commons Park and worked on wetland restoration at Illahee Trail.

Currently, our Plant Stewards have been working in Ebright Creek Park, using the restoration techniques they learned in their program, they lead volunteer events to complete and maintain their restoration project along Ebright Creek.

Storm Water StewardsNew this this year, the storm water stewards are working to turn storm water ponds into more ecologically friendly ponds by planting native trees and shrubs that benefit water quality and provide habitat for Sammamish wildlife.

Adopt-A-RoadWe have over 30 organizations that have adopted roads in our community! These groups go out twice a year and pick up litter along our streets. They help keep our streets clean and improve the environment. Currently, all our streets have been adopted, but if your organization would like to be added to the waitlist, please contact: [email protected]

Get Involved! As an Individual: Check out upcoming projects or sign up for e-mail alerts on our Community Invovlement Page at www.sammamish.us.

As a Group: If your group or organization would like to volunteer, please contact [email protected] or call 425-295-0556 to set up a group volunteer opportunity.

Park AmenitiesParks ProjectsLand Acquisition Strategy & Implementation PolicyThe City of Sammamish is developing a land acquisition strategy to proactively acquire more land to serve public needs. The City is focused not only on developing new parks and trails, but also on capturing the environmental benefits of preserving natural resources, wildlife corridors, and tree canopy. In part, this strategy has been prompted by growing concerns in the community about rapid residential growth. The strategy will guide near-term and long-term acquisition activities to support the community’s growth and diverse needs and interests. We will be engaging the City Council and Parks and Recreation Commission with special emphasis on public engagement in development of the land acquisition strategy, slated for completion by summer of 2017. Please follow the link to the City’s webpage for upcoming surveys, meetings and other ways to provide your valued input in this exciting process: www.sammamish.us/parks-recreation/studies/land-acquisition-strategy-and-implementation-policy/.

Beaver Lake PreserveThis year we added approximately half a mile of new trails just north of Beaver Lake Drive SE, and are in the process of completing another quarter mile of trails to the south of Beaver Lake Drive SE. The new trails to the north allow users to complete a loop within the Preserve without crossing Beaver Lake Drive SE. We have added wayfinding signage to help residents navigate their way through the new network. Trails to the south are anticipated to be completed in spring 2017. This work includes a crushed-rock trail leading down to Beaver Lake, and a soft-surface trail loop with an overlook of the wetlands. All this work would not have been possible without the countless hours contributed by local high school students, Boy Scouts, YMCA members and other interested groups, all under the supervision of the Washington Trails Association.
