Construction on our Main Entrance and Lobby at Providence Health Center is really taking shape. . . it won’t be long until ToGo’s will be able to expand seating for our guests & visitors—creating that welcoming atmosphere that’s already so much a part of the ministry at Providence!

Two construction projects will continue over the months ahead—first, the expansion of our Women & Newborn Center on the 5th Floor remains near the original target date for completion in early 2012; and, second . . .we’ve begun the construction necessary to finish out the shelled 4th Floor of the F. M. & Gloria Young Tower to increase our medical/surgical beds by a capacity of thirty. The construction on this 4th Floor project is estimated for completion in approximately nine months.

While we are very pleased with our construction and facility . . .I will forever remind us that people make our ministry . . .and, as we continue to grow in numbers, we are putting together a team of fine folks who are integrating excellence and stewardship; demonstrating courageous innovation; and, affirming the hope & joy of our ministry together. Providence people are called to our core values that guide us as we serve God here in Central Texas.

As a part of our growing family, I hope you’ll join Beverley and I for the Annual Associate Picnic on Saturday, May 14—it’ll be in our Green Lot here on our main campus . . .and our committee has put together phenomenal plans for a great time together with family and friends; so, don’t miss this year’s picnic . . .more details are on page 4 of this issue.

So much has happened since our last issue of The Spirit of Providence—be sure to check out the pictures from our Associate Service Awards Banquet on pages 6 and 7 . . .and don’t miss details of our longest-tenured Associate in the history of our ministry, Jan Howard. Below, there’s a full story on highlighting Jan’s commitment to Providence.

Finally, be sure to read all about Symphony on page 9 and 10 . . .it’s the next step in our ongoing effort to operate our healthcare ministry more efficiently so we can carry on our mission of providing the highest quality care to all, with special attention to those who are poor and vulnerable—afterall, this is our highest calling!

The Stroke Center at Providence is committed to raising stroke awareness—giving you the tools to Strike Back at Stroke! It is important to manage risk factors and understand the signs and

symptoms of stroke. Rapid recognition and response improves the chance of recovery.

A Stroke is a Brain Attack The brain needs a constant supply of blood, which carries the oxygen and nutrients it needs to function. A stroke occurs when one of the arteries that supply blood to the brain is blocked or bursts. As a result, part of the brain does not get the blood it needs, so it starts to die. When a stroke damages a certain part of the brain, that area may no longer work as well as it did before the stroke, which can cause problems with walking, speaking, seeing or feeling.

STOP Stroke Stroke is the third leading cause of death in Americans and the leadingcause of disability. It affects more than 780,000 people annually. The good news is that up to 80% of strokes can be prevented if the risk factors

Safety, safety, safety…so much emphasis on safety, and rightly so! How important this is, that everyone who comes to us is safe in our care. Our mission and our core values call us to this. To continue the

loving ministry of Jesus as Healer and to serve each one as if we were serving the Lord Himself is a very high calling and we take it very seriously. Everything is looked at to assess its effect on the patient.

Well, the other day I was up on 3 South and saw signs on the wall that said, “Quiet Please, Patients Resting.” I thought it was wonderful! But what does “quiet” have to do with safety, you might ask. Actually, all of us know what a sleepless night can do for our well-being, so it can only be worse for our patients when the hall and the units are loud and noisy.

Having been a patient myself, I know how sleep can really help healing and can help even with pain management. And since sleep is a “prescription,” if you will, for healing, I’d say it’s part of our safety emphasis.

So you can see how important this is, but what does that have to do with us as caregivers? Here’s the easy part. We need to follow 3 South’s example of quiet halls, especially at night, so patients can sleep. It fits into our FISH philosophy of “Make their Day”. Just change it to “Make their Night,” too. Our patients should always be able to say, “I got a good night’s sleep, it was so quiet.”

Who would think that our mission could be so simple as to “Make their Nights always quiet?” Let’s do it and not be afraid to remind each other as well! Our patients will thank us!

See you around,

SisterCp.s. Hope you are having a good Lent and a Happy Easter to come!

Make their Day, Make their Night

are addressed! High blood pressure is the number one cause of stroke. Other controllable risk factors include high cholesterol, previous “mini-strokes” (transient ischemic attack or TIA), diabetes, smoking, alcohol abuse, obesity and heart diseases, i.e. atrial fibrillation. Ask your doctor for tips on managing these health conditions to reduce your risk for stroke.

taken hold and the units are trying to keep their scores higher than other units with quality care and patient safety being the focus. That puts a little bit of fun into the workday!”

Our unit teams have been achieving great success with their efforts in enhancing a patient’s and families experience. One patient stated: “I was greatly impressed with your hospital and staff. They are by far the best I’ve experienced, as it felt more like I was staying in a “5 star” hotel where EXCELLENCE is required from your staff. They did an excellent job” Another patient stated: “Very patient-satisfaction oriented. The call light was always answered within seconds and I was promptly given everything I needed before I could even ask them. The nursing staff was very skilled at anticipating my needs.”

Having the opportunity to provide such exceptional care and service to our patients and families is a goal we always strive for however the initiatives implemented have proven to benefit the staff just as greatly. “The staff is more engaged in the patient’s “entire” hospital experience. The patients have expressed a great appreciation about receiving follow-up phone calls and many staff have voiced an appreciation about hearing the positive feed-back from the patients; it is a win, win and it has improved morale and job satisfaction,” stated Donna Robinson, director of the Women and Newborns Center.

The success and progress the unit teams have made with the leadership of the directors, assistant directors, unit educators and officers has set the bar high for the new officers coming on board for 2011 and for the future direction of the program.

So as we go about our day and we see one another from various departments, a Providence badge hanging proudly, know that’s your teammate. Know that we are all a reflection of this ministry and we all have made an impact and difference on the care and service provided. The work that is done everyday by our talented teams ensures that exceptional experiences continue today and for future generations to come. From the hands-on care givers to the dietary and environmental services teams— we are all “Team Providence.”

In this prayer at the Last Supper Jesus is petitioning his Father for oneness and unity among his immediate disciples and also for all of his future disciples, which includes us. At the time of Christ there were faithful Jews, conventional Jewish religious leaders, Gentiles, pagans and fervent

followers of Christ and there wasn’t much unity there. This prayer is as appropriate today as it was in Jesus’ time. Unfortunately, up to now we haven’t achieved the oneness among the religions of the world for which Jesus prayed. Interestingly, though, I think we are getting closer to it, particularly here at Providence. I see more positive interaction and respectful conversation here among Christians and between Christians and those of other religions. This gives me hope that Jesus’ prayer will someday come to fruition.

Traditional feasts such as Easter and Christmas have usually been observed by most Christians but now other feasts like Pentecost and Ash Wednesday along with traditional Catholic liturgical seasons such as Advent and Lent are being adopted and celebrated by more and more Christian congregations. For example, several denominations share the same Lectionary (Scriptures read on Sundays). Catholics sing time-honored Protestants songs. Protestants attend Ash Wednesday Mass and receive ashes and even hold their own Lenten services. People are much more welcoming and respectful of persons of different Christian denominations and religions. In Waco, there is an active Interfaith Alliance in which people from all religions and denominations are invited into dialogue.

I am a Catholic chaplain and one day when I was making rounds a patient asked me what denomination I was. Usually patients don’t ask that. Unity seems more common in the hospital. Anyway, I told him I was Catholic and with good humor he asked me if I would say a Baptist prayer. I said, “Yes sir.” So I prayed a prayer I would pray with anyone. After I finished praying he said that it was a pretty good Baptist prayer but just wasn’t “quite long enough.” We both chuckled.

At this past Ash Wednesday Mass in the hospital auditorium, an associate told me, as she entered, that she wasn’t Catholic but asked if she may attend. I assured her that she was welcome and I was glad she was there. Afterward, she told me how much she appreciated the service and how delighted she was that we can practice our faith, any faith, with such freedom and respect at Providence. Now we’re not perfect here at Providence by any means, at least not yet, but I think for the most part Jesus is smiling with us and on us. I hope he is applauding us in that we are striving to get closer to the oneness for which he prayed so many years ago.

Father, I have given them the glory You gave me, so that they may be one, as we are one. (John 17:22)

Did you know that neurons that fire together wire together? That is why our paths continue in much the same fashion everyday. But, we can retrain ourselves! By reprogramming your brain to opt for oatmeal and avoid donuts, or drink water instead of sugary drinks, you are making

smarter, healthier choices that will benefit your waistline and your overall health. Try some of these simple changes: when making a sandwich, put some extra veggies on your whole wheat bread and avoid bacon and mayonnaise. Commit to eating only one sweet treat per week for a month. Try smaller meals and healthy snacks such as grapes, an apple or an orange.

Healthy eating and 30 minutes of exercise five days a week is a perfect combination for an improved sense of health and well-being. Have you joined the Wellness Center? Now is a great time to do so…And, it’s free! The Wellness Activity Area is open from 6:00 a.m. to midnight seven days a week. With over 500 associates signed up to use the exercise equipment and over 50 associates a day who come in to exercise, it is exciting to see our Providence family committed to a healthy lifestyle!

Congratulations to all of our associates who have made life-saving changes by lowering their cholesterol (LDL), decreasing their weight, or getting off medications for high blood pressure. The most common comments I hear from associates coming into the Wellness Center are: “I feel so much better!” and “I have so much more energy!”

For more information on signing up to become a member of the Providence Wellness Center please contact Lynette Bonge at 254.751.4369 or email [email protected].

Looking forward to seeing you soon…come on in and have some fun!

Symphony in Full Swing

Symphony in Full Swing...continued on page 10

The foundational work of Symphony is in full swing at Providence Healthcare Network! In each issue of The Spirit of Providence, we will feature an informational piece on the

details of Symphony—our next step in the ongoing effort to operate our ministry with greater levels of efficiency.

Providence is in sync with Ascension Health ministries across the nation and the success of the Symphony initiative depends on the focus and dedication of all Associates. So, when you hear someone talking about Symphony, you will now know it’s more than just a chocolate candy bar! Instead, it’s a multi-year plan that will provide each local health ministry with greater access to critical information which will transform our capability for reporting and analytics. By standardizing processes, more resources can be dedicated to those we serve.

It’s no secret that in order to sustain our ministry, we need to confront changes in the economy and in the healthcare field. As a member of Ascension Health, Providence has the unique opportunity to collaborate and standardize processes and functions for the benefit of all local health ministries across the country.

During the 8-month Design Phase of Symphony here at Providence, 24 Associates served on the Core Functional Team.

Our local team includes:

We are called to provide holistic care which sustains and improves the health of individuals…to be advocates for a compassionate and just society…and to serve all persons with special attention to those who are poor and vulnerable. Our Social Services team, made up of licensed master prepared social workers (LMSW), carries this out each and every day, as they are available to assist patients in coping with emotional

and social needs that may arise during a hospital stay.

March marked National Social Work month, celebrating the role social work has in reaching positive outcomes for each patient. By providing patients and their families with education on various topics, referrals to community resources, advocacy in navigating the medical system and assistance in making a smooth transition home, social workers ensure that our patients are equipped with the guidance and support they need.

Social Work Care Providing Emotional and Social Support to Patients and their Families

Josie Martinez, LMSW

Josie has been a part of the Providence team for over a year. With 20 years of experience in child welfare she is able to help guide families through complex situations. Her bilingual skills ease communication barriers as she is often called to translate for our Spanish speaking patients. Her compassion and dedication to her patients sets her apart—she goes above and beyond to make sure that her patients have all the needed resources and support.

Nick Haynes, LMSW

Nick joined the Providence team about a year ago after completing his Master’s degree from Baylor. Nick is passionate about advocating for patients who encounter barriers to receiving the care and resources they deserve, and for social change. He has a very strong knowledge of government systems and programs and is great at guiding his patients through those very frustrating processes. His new and forward-thinking ideas make him a dynamic part of our team.

Ashley Summers, Social Work Intern

Ashley is a senior, bachelor of social work degree candidate at Baylor University. She is extremely compassionate and patient, and an integral part of our team.

We are happy to assist your department with any social work needs. To contact us, please call: 254-751-4730.

Congratulations, Barbara Beetson your Recent Retirement!

Thanks to each of these Providence Associates for leading our ministry into the future. Together, we’re now moving forward with the Build and Test Phase here at Providence.

Our Symphony Project manager here at Providence is Christine Francis. “I’m working with our local Core Functional Team to make Providence a more connected ministry,” shared Christine. “Consistent with the Providence distributed leadership model, we’ll rely on the talented people within our ministry to champion change here in Waco.”

Symphony’s changes will help us transform the way we work. Reduced costs will allow us to focus even more on excellent clinical care. Finance, Human Resources, and Purchasing (Supply Chain) Associates will rely on a common platform for data, consistent with leading practices. Less time will be spent managing information, and more time will be invested in analysis, insight, & innovation.

A common timeline and chart of accounts will facilitate the analysis of timely and comparable data. New technology will expand information access, foster collaboration/ information sharing, and upgrade information security. At Providence, we’ll see advancements such as a single sign-on for operational systems, a common method of messaging, and a system-wide information portal that will streamline how we obtain and use information.

As with all major initiatives, such change requires time. Someone’s always got to go first—and when it comes to Symphony within Ascension Health, our friends at Sacred Heart in Pensacola, Florida, will Go Live on July 1. Sacred Heart will be followed on January 1, 2012, by our ministries in Mobile and Nashville. Beginning in mid-2012, approximately three additional Ascension Health ministries will Go Live per quarter. At press time of this issue, Ascension has not released an ordered list of Go Live dates—however, we know that all Ascension ministries will deploy the Symphony solution between mid-2012 and 2015.

As your Lead Communicator, it’s my role to provide up-to-date and thorough communication about the deployment of the Symphony solution. As Associates at Providence Healthcare Network, we have access to an Ascension Q & A on-line. You’re encouraged to take advantage of AskSymphony at www.ascensionhealth.org/asksymphony.In the meantime, keep an eye out for local Symphony news in each future issue of The Spirit of Providence.

“I have been in the medical field for over 15 years and I have always made it a priority to be an active blood donor. I have seen through personal experience the importance for our local blood banks to have ample supply.”

AshleyCarter,RN,BSN,CPST,5SouthEducator

“I had never donated blood before the February drive; it was just something I felt compelled to do that day. I saw so many people standing in line to give and I felt like I should be one of them. It sounds silly, but I was afraid of fainting! The staff made the donation as quick and painless as possible and I had no problems at all afterward. I will definitely continue to donate in the future.”

CharlesGoodwin,DirectorofPulmonaryServices

“It’s funny because I hate needles…I really do! But I decided that if I can go through one needle stick to help save someone’s life—it is worth it. I tried it for the first time 3 years ago and I have been doing it ever since. And more recently, my mom’s health has required that she receive blood transfusions…the blood collected at our drives help the blood banks provide her with the resources she needs.”

Mark your calendars for the remaining 2011 blood drives-you won’t want to miss the opportunity to touch someone’s life!
