President’s Message

Our annual December Dinner Dance turned out

so well! Many people braved the snow to dance

and eat a delectable dinner. Our thanks to An-

thony and his staff for preparing and serving a

delicious meal! This meal has become a nice

tradition for our club to give back to our mem-

bers for their support throughout the year.

This year at our December dance, the Board of Directors had the

honor of inducting longtime hand dancer Andy Anderson into the

DC Hand Dance Hall of Fame! It was a very special time for me as

Andy was president when I joined the club. Our friend Andy is well-

deserving of the standing ovation he received that night!

At this writing, I am looking forward to welcoming the New Year on

December 31, 2017 at our glamorous New Year’s Eve Gala! I hope

many of you will be able to join us for this event to ring in 2018!

Remember to renew your membership this month so that you can

enjoy all the benefits and fun dancing with friends throughout the

year! The new membership renewal/application link is on our web-

site at the top of the home page. We ended 2017 with 425 members

and want to break this record in the upcoming year. We are well on

our way with over 140 members who have joined for 2018! Bring

friends, family, and acquaintances to our dances to enrich their lives

and make them healthier!

January 13 is our annual Mitten Dance so bring mittens, hats, and

scarves to help clothe children and adults who don’t have warm

clothing for the winter. We want to repeat the generosity shown at

our November Toys for Tots Dance.

Looking ahead, in this newsletter you will find the flyer and forms

for our next big event, Meet Me At The Beach (MMATB)! We are

hoping many of you will be able to join us at the Clarion Resort in

March for four fun-filled days of dancing, workshops, activities and

making new friends!

Speaking from experience, the Board of Directors work hard to bring

you special events throughout the year. Please know that we wel-

come your ideas and hope you will take time to share your thoughts

with us.

Let’s Dance!

The Queens Holiday Party By Carol Barry

The "Queens" came together recently

for our annual

Christmas party and a great time was

had by all. Carole O. announced her

new marriage and we offered a prayer

for Helen during difficult times and

asked that prayers continue to be sent

her way. What fun we had seeing some ladies we hadn't

seen in a while.

Our thanks to Elaine for hosting this special event and to

our photographers for taking and sharing their pictures.

We wish everyone a blessed Christmas and holiday sea-

son and good health in the new year.

“Jack and his wife, Linda, are

longtime members of DCHDC and

have been helping with the toy

drive for several years. We sin-

cerely thank them for all they do

for the children and our club. Jack

reported our contribution of 131

toys, 11 stocking stuffers and 5

books. Special thanks also to our

members and guests for their

thoughtful and generous dona-

tions.”

Linda Trader , DCHDC President

Jack Flood presents a certificate of appreciation to DCHDC President

Linda Trader from the MCL DE Devil Dogs Det. 780, Marine Corp

League, for toy donations collected at our “Toys for Tots” dance on

2017 Hall of Fame Award Honoree

DCHDC President Linda Trader presents the 2017 Hall of Fame Award to long-time member and past president Andy Anderson at the December 9th holiday party. Board members Phyllis Crutchfield and Ron Carroll join in the applause. This award is given to recognize Andy’s contributions to the instruction and preservation of hand dance, and for his many years of service in leadership and supportive roles to advance the mission of the D.C. Hand Dance Club. Andy began dancing at age 12 at College Park teen clubs and firehouses. He joined DCHDC at its inception in 1994. and served as club president in 1995-1996 and again in 1999-2000.

Thoughts from longtime member Andy Anderson After receiving my wonderful, prestigious award at our recent Christmas dance, I reflected on my 20-plus years with the club and wanted to share some of my thoughts. Looking around that night, I saw a lot of new faces at the dance—which is the life line of any club. But, I really want everyone to understand the most important part of the name of our club: Metropolitan Washington DC Hand Dance PRESERVATION Society. A favorite event I attended in 2000 was the “Steel City Boogie Club” annual event in Pittsburgh, PA. There were nine club presidents in attendance and I represented DCHDC at a roundtable discussion during the event. What I learned that day holds true today: we have the lowest dues, we dance more per month than other clubs, we have the largest membership, we have a newsletter and we give free dance lessons. We hand pick venues that fit our priorities for a relaxed, clean place with a nice floor, good food and safe parking. Finally, we have our own DJ’s that customize music choices—beach, R&B, rock, or country—to support our unique style of dance. We are a classy group of dancers that want to dance!

How lucky we are to have a venue of some type to go to at least three times a week to dance as well as attending special functions like “Meet Me at the Beach” and our New Year’s Eve Gala, etc. Sometimes, we see each other more than our own families! We're more like a big family! As longtime member and former club president Tom Tassara once put it, “The Board's job is truly a labor of love.” Yes, it is, and a lot of hard work goes into planning every dance and event. So, please, take the “job” to heart and help keep our style, DC Hand Dancing, alive!

“By age 18 the dance clubs in D.C. held more interest for us because we could have a beer, dance to live bands and get closer to the girls because the dance floors were small.”

—Andy Anderson
