Red ribbon week winner

National Family Partnership, formerly the National Federation ofParents for Drug Free Youth, was established as a grassroots, nonprofitorganization in 1980 by a handful of concerned and determined parents

who were convinced they should begin to play a leadership role in drugprevention. Nancy Reagan was an Honorary Chair of NFP. NFP is anational leader in drug prevention education & advocacy. Our mission isto lead and support our nation’s families and communities in nurturingthe full potential of healthy, drug free youth. Officer Enrique Camarenawas killed while working undercover in Mexico for the DrugEnforcement Agency. His family and friends wore red badges of satin tohonor him and his desire to make a difference. In 1988, NFP sponsoredthe first National Red Ribbon Celebration.

Honey Island Student, Kendall Remerow decided to enter a conteston www.redribbon.org, which is sponsored by NFP. The rules were:

•Students and families decorate their home’s front door, mailbox orfence with a double-looped red ribbon and the theme, “Love Yourself. BeDrug Free.” Schools may decorate any part of their campus.  •Take a photo with your decoration and upload it to RedRibbon.org/contest from Oct. 1 – Nov. 4. You must be 18 years or older toupload the photo and can do so from any desktop or mobile device.•Ask family and friends to vote for your entry beginning Nov. 5.

•Eleven winners will be announced Dec. 5. We sent fliers home with every student encouraging families to vote for Kendall, who was the only

candidate from Louisiana. To our

delight, she won the contest! Anofficer from the local DEA came anddelivered the $1,000 check to HoneyIsland on December 16th  during ourmorning announcements. Kendall alsowon an iPad for her family.Congratulations Kendall

We received the following commendations: Honey Island has a safe and positive environment where children develop a

love for learning. Children are actively engaged and work as teams. The teacher‘s role is that of a facilitator of learning while students take an

active role in learning.

We also received the following recommendations:

Continue to communicate assessment results (DIBELS, District Checkpoints, Curriculum BasedAssessments) with parents. Bring teachers in on the transition plan to support children and families as them move from and to the next

school (Cypress Cove/Little Oak). Technology is emerging. Continue to work to put technology in the hands of children to enhance learning.

Our positive school community of students, parents, faculty and staff reflects the constructive report. I am proudof our commendations. We will work as a school team to develop an action plan to address the recommendations. It is our mission to ensure that Honey Island is a school where – Every Day, Every Child Succeeds!
