According to the newly published “Pulse of Vermont” study by the Vermont Business Roundtable, “no single issue stood out so prominently...as the state of the economy. In higher proportions than previously, Vermonters expressed a greater desire for job creation and were more persuaded than ever that economic growth contributes to an improved the quality of life.” The study, based on a survey last spring, found the impetus for this focus on jobs was simple: People are worried whether they’ll be able to live comfort- ably when they retire even as they struggle to pay their bills now. Just over 1-in-3 Vermont- ers surveyed for the study are doing better now finan- cially than five years earlier, representing the lowest level reported in the five “Pulse of Vermont” studies done over the past 20 years. Hardest hit by economic changes are native- born Vermonters, people with less education and lower in- comes, residents living outside Chittenden County and, of course, the unemployed. These concerns are exacerbated by significant shifts in Vermont’s economy. Where are the jobs today? “We have seen the emer-gence of jobs that didn’texist in 1990, but the

proportion of women in thework force has continued toincrease while the percentof males has decreased,”researchers wrote. “In ad-dition, average earnings inVermont have risen overthe last 20 years, but so hasincome inequality, althoughto a lesser extent than inother states.”

Vermonters are less opti-mistic about the local jobsmarket now than in 1990,when the 1980s boom fueledoptimism and the labormarket was tight, research-ers said. State residents’concerns have shifted toother issues since then, butnow their minds are clearlyfocused on Vermont’seconomy. In 1990, creating

more good jobs was veryimportant to two-thirds ofVermonters; last year, thatfigure was at 90 percent.

Why? The recession. Thenation’s economic strugglesboosted the state’s unem-ployment rate to 7.9 percentnearly two years ago, andthe number of unemployedstate residents more than

More than 70 percent ofpeople are satisfied withtheir jobs, although that

is somewhat lower than adecade ago.

“We wonder to what extentthe difficult job market isresponsible for declining jobsatisfaction; most respon-dents had jobs, but not allwere working in their firstchoice of positions,” re-searchers wrote.

According to the study,some Vermonters take jobs“below their potential”simply because they want tolive here and enjoy Ver-mont’s quality of life.

If there is any advice foremployers, it is that workermorale matters, maybe asmuch or more than pay andbenefits.

“The importance of pro-viding work environmentsthat are challenging shouldnot be underestimated interms of promoting workersatisfaction, and as a conse-quence, productivity,” theresearchers conclude.
