in as an interim and then Allison had to galva-nize the congregation to carry on. Worship, ourmost regular activity, had to be covered. Ourreligious school program had to continue. Andother major or significant moments in the life ofour congregation had to be planned andexecuted.

So many of you answered the call to servewithout hesitation. Some of you did things forthe first time in your lives to ensure that the lifeof our congregation continued without pause or“hiccup.”

And then there was Harvey. How much fullercould the plate of the Temple president who was

also an elected County official become? That’s arhetorical question.

With the same caring and compassion Allisonshowed me nine months prior, she extendedherself to every member of the congregationwhen the storm ended and the city’s watersystem failed. It was the right thing to do, andthat is what Allison does.

And many of you who are able and willing, responded to the call again. Compared to manywe fared fairly well. And we responded with

gratitude and a commitment to passing ourgood fortune forward.

During Allison’s term we recognized, createdand experienced many, many “shehechiyanu”moments. Moments of deeply felt gratitude andblessing of God’s grace that strengthensustain us and deliver us to miraculousmoments. And, again, we say, “amen.”

This brings us full circle and moves us forward. My journey through the disruption of cancer iscomplete. My life renewed and “reborn” returnsme to sacred service in the life of our congrega-tion and community. And Allison passes thegavel and mantle of sacred leadership to Cheryl

Barenberg. A new journey begins. A nearly 125years journey continues.

Blessed are you, Adonai our God, sovereign ofall, for giving us life, for sustaining us, and forenabling us to reach this sacred moment.

And let us say, “Amen!”

L’shalom,

Joshua S. Taub, Rabbi

Excerpt from Rabbi Mathew D. Michaels’ Chanukah-December 15th worship service:

Shabbat Shalom and Chag urim Sameach! Tonight not only marks the 4th night of Chanukah, it isalso my last weekend with you as your interim Rabbi. Allow me to begin my remarks this eveningwith a point of personal privilege. So many of you have stepped-up to lead this congregation inprayer on the Shabbat when I wasn’t in-town, and because of your help and dedication, our congre-gational family did not miss a “spiritual beat”. Also, thanks to Angela and Dwight who providethe beautiful music that continues to enhance our spiritual experiences week in and week out. Myappreciation to Jane and Wilton who are truly part of the Emanuel family. On a daily basis, theymake sure that things run smoothly. Their commitment to our congregation is something to beadmired. Finally, a very special thank you to Allison. This has been a trying and difficult year, yetyou have led this congregation with care, compassion and dedication. You have given of yourselfand worked tirelessly on our behalf. Your love for and devotion to this congregation was particu-larly evident when, following Hurricane Harvey, you called and reached out to every singlemember of this congregation and organized a variety of ways to help others recover from Harvey’sdevastating effects. Allison, like the Chanukah candles, may you continue to shed light and bringwarmth to our congregation and community.

From Our Temple President

T E P 3

I can’t believe this time has come. It is bittersweet to realize the past two years serving as

President of Temple Emanuel is coming to an end. I would like to take this last opportunity to

thank everyone who has assisted with the privilege I have had to serve as your leader. There

are so many to thank. First I want to thank my family: my parents Iris and Jerry Nathan, my

husband Mike Getz, and my children Lee Golias & Buffin Reynolds – all of whom have

served as my support, sounding boards and role models. I am thankful they stood by my side

and supported my decision to lead our Temple. Next, I am tremendously thankful for Wilton

Allen and Jane Kaulfus. Our Temple is dependent on these true angels and they always

deliver. Wilton personally visits our sick and infirmed members weekly and is ALWAYS there for us. He even

makes sure the prayer book I use on the bimah each week is one that bears the name of my family. Jane has taken

over credit card charges and the Judaica shop in addition to her many regular duties. She designs and creates all

of our handouts including the bulletins, flyers, eblasts, and Congregational Dinner programs. We are so fortunate

you are both part of our Temple family.

We could not have functioned spiritually without the incredible Rabbi Matt Michaels who came in two weekends a

month, visited the sick, conducted funerals, unveilings and baby namings and was only a phone call away for every-

thing we have needed during Rabbi Taub’s illness. Our prayer leaders, who are listed in this bulletin, were invalua-

ble on Friday nights. I am so appreciative of our coordinator Cynthia Wolf who not only conducted beautiful

services herself, but counseled and encouraged so many of us to become a prayer leader. Thanks to all of you for

preparing and delivering beautiful Friday night services.

My Board of Trustees are superstars. Each one of you has participated and I am so thankful you said yes to serv-

ing. Cheryl is ready to take over as your leader – she has been available at every turn and cooked virtually every

meal we have had at Temple these past 2 years. Beverly kept incredible minutes, Bobby kept our finances in

check which is a huge responsibility and was part of the Band, Robin led our Sisterhood, Wayne led Brotherhood

and the Ritual committee, Brian secured new credit card processing and secured our Rosinger Dinner speaker,

Bruce made the Orchard a reality, Norma provided atmosphere for our events and chaired our Awards committee,

Gene was our chauffeur for special guests, cemetery worker and volunteer of all trades, and the list for Cynthia is

endless – but serving as Social Justice chair, she along with her committee provided incredible projects that helped

virtually everyone in our community and extended throughout the globe. I am also appreciative of Rita, Ken, Lois,

and my two Stephens [Stephen Eisen and Stephen Roos (z’l)]. Our committee chairs were outstanding and I

want to give special mention to Cemetery Chair Alan Sampson and House and Grounds Chair Mike Spector. Both

men are on call at all times and are always there for all of us. I also want to recognize the Rosinger Dinner

committee who created an event that surpassed all previous events. I know next year will be even better.

I wish I could thank all of you individually but there just isn’t enough room. I am thankful for Rabbi Joshua Taub’s

recovery and look forward to his healthy future. Happy New Year!

Allison Nathan Getz - Temple Emanuel President

Temple Emanuel Social Justice Update (January 2018 )

P 4 T E

Temple Emanuel Social Justice Committee (TESJ) has a tradition of making amitzvah difference as part of Temple Emanuel’s Love Thy Neighbor initiative. Wehave enjoyed planning traditional tikkun olam projects as a key part of the program-ming of Temple Emanuel in fulfillment of President Allison’s theme of “Together inTradition”. We have enjoyed having President Allison as a key player in SocialJustice throughout her term. Mazel tov, President Allison, on your two years ofmitzvah leadership! In January at the Annual Congregation Dinner, we will all knowPresident-Elect Cheryl’s theme; and next month, we will share how we will translateher theme into TESJ projects throughout her term! In the meantime, this bulletincontains updates on TESJ final projects for 2017 (see 2017 Annual Reports distribut-ed at the Congregation Dinner for summary of all 2017 TESJ Projects) and what’s onthe menu for the first months of 2018:

2017

Christmas Day at Some Other Place (SOP), a tradition of Temple Emanuel: Manyvolunteers served Christmas lunch to the clients of Some Other Place in two ways: at thesoup kitchen and via SOP Meals-on-Wheels. The full report of the volunteers and the num-ber of meals served will be in the February 2018 bulletin. To all who helped, THANK YOU!

Jewish National Fund, a tradition of Temple Emanuel: We sent an additional dona-tion of $100 to JNF for reforestation in Israel. Donations such as this and the $150 sentbefore are made possible because of donors to TESJ Fund. THANK YOU!

Southeast Texas Food Bank, a tradition of Temple Emanuel: We sent an additionaldonation to SETX Food Bank bringing our total monetary donation to $296. Did you knowthat every $1.00 donated to SETX Food Bank represents 3 meals? Therefore, we providedfunds for 888 meals PLUS all the pounds that were reported last month! Donations suchas this are made possible because of donors to Temple Emanuel Social Justice Fund.THANK YOU!

2018

Disaster Relief, a tradition of Temple Emanuel: Please share your mitzvah dollarswith Temple Emanuel Social Justice Fund that we might as a Congregation and as Friendsof Temple Emanuel work together to share our support with wildfire victims of California…like others from across the country shared with us following Hurricane Harvey. THANKYOU for paying forward our appreciation that others might also feel the tallit of friendshipfrom afar! THANK YOU!

Family Services of Southeast Texas, a tradition of Temple Emanuel: Support forthis annual project is taking a new direction, and your help is needed to provide daytimeand nighttime diapers and pullups for the children at The Shelter. The mothers andchildren are escaping abusive situations. The children arrive at The Shelter with only thediapers that they are wearing. Family Services also wants new or gently read chil-dren’s books to give to the clients as gifts when they are finally able to leave The Shelter. This project is ongoing until Friday, February 16 when we share children’s diapers, pullups and books with representatives from Family Services in the Swerdlow-Roosth So-cial Hall as part of the O’neg Shabbat. THANK YOU to Ann Goodman for coordinating thisproject; THANK YOU to all who will be helping TESJ help kids!

The Orchard, a tradition of Temple Emanuel: Last call for donations for trees for the2018 Tu Bishvat tree planting in The Orchard! Each fruit or nut tree will be professionallyplanted. Please consider a donation of $70 per tree payable to Temple Emanuel with memofor Social Justice – Trees. THANK YOU to Bruce Hoffer for coordinating this project;THANK YOU to all who have and/or will be making donations of any amount for TheOrchard!

THANK YOU from Temple Emanuel Social Justice Committee!

May this New Year bring us more wonderful opportunities to work together. Override the chal-lenges and bring in changes that you wish to see. May G-D bless our families with prosperity, good health and happiness in this New Year of 2018.

What a delicious and beautiful Chanukah dinner we recently had. Many thanks to Bene’ Rutman,Lois Rutman, Ann Goodman, Sarah Hawes, Margaret Whipkey, Marilyn Manson-Hays andfamily. Again Wilton thanks for everything you have done to help. I think everyone trulythought the food was scrumptious and a great time was had by all.

We had to change our Birthday luncheon to January 24. This date worked best for our guest speak-er. Our Co-Chairs will be Beverly Hickman-Hay, Arline Meyers, Rita Davis and myself. Rita hasa lovely program scheduled for us from the Stark Museum. Invitations will be going out in themail soon.

Deli Day is about to be underway. We will be setting up our cheese cake baking days very soon.Be on the lookout for dates to help volunteer. A very generous donation of 5 Kitchenaid Mixerswas donated by Cynthia Wolf. A huge thank you from the bottom of our hearts. We appreciate itso very much.

100 MENORAHS- Some personal thoughts

The congregation of Temple Emanuel is the small but very intense light of Judaism in Southeast

Texas. Like the 100’s of candles burning in unison at our Chanukah/Shabbat service, let us contin-

ue to shine brightly together in the pursuit of righteousness, charity, spirituality, and social justice.
