The Four Keys of Faith FormationThe Four Keys are provided to help you nourish your child’s/grandchild’s faith.Scripture Readings for the Baptism of Our Lord:Genesis 1:1-5; Psalm 29; Acts 19:1-7; Mark 1:4-11Family Devotions: As part of your home devotional time this week, share a rite of baptismal remembrance. Gather a jug of water, an empty bowl, a large center candle, and a smaller candle for each person. Pour the water into thebowl and say these words:

Leader: For your gift of water All: we thank you, Lord.Leader: For the water of baptism All: we thank you, Lord.

Now light the center candle.Leader: For your gift of light, which warms and guides us, All: we thank you, Lord.Leader: For the light of Christ All: we thank you, Lord.Leader: By being baptized, we were buried with Christ into his death.

Christ has been raised from the dead by the Father’s glory. And like Christ, we also can live a new life.

Each person now lights his or her candle from the center candle, as the leader says:In baptism, we were joined to the life of Christ. Let us shine for him.

Household members may dip their fingers into the bowl of water and make the sign of the cross on each other’sforehead, saying these words:

All: You are a baptized child of God, who is well pleased with you.Caring Conversation: What do you know or remember about the day you were baptized? What happened whenJesus was baptized? What did God do for you when you were baptized?

Family Service: As Lutherans, we believe that we respond to what we have heard through the Good News of thelife, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ – given for you for the forgiveness of sins. Good works (good fruit) happens, and we do not even know about it. As parents, you can “create” opportunities for your kids to learn aboutservice, with the understanding that service is not a “have-to” but rather a “get-to” – a “response-to.” Having heardthe Gospel preached, we move beyond ourselves, caring for our neighbor. Think about the Scripture verses for the week and the conversations you have shared. God has gifted you and your children with abilities, personalities, and certain qualities. As a parent, family member, or friend, you can help them discover their uniquegifts by encouraging them in the things that they do well and feel passionate that they can serve others.

Family Traditions and Rituals: Read the words from The Small Catechism about the Sacrament of Baptism.TEXT Your Offering!
