James Hetfield, Early Life

Born August 3, 1963 In Downey, California.

He was raised in the Christian Science faith.

Because of his family’s beliefs, he wasn’t allowed to participate in school activities.

He was labeled a “freak” and an “outsider”.

Hetfield’s mother was a light opera singer.

Both parents passed away from cancer.

Partly due to lack of medical treatment.

Metallica, Beginnings

Hetfield enlisted in several garage bands.

An ad in the paper drew him to Lars Ulrich, a drummer.

Together, they formed Metallica in 1982.

The band also included Cliff Burton and Dave Mustaine.

“Alchoholica”

Metallica’s first album released in 1983.

Hetfield and Ulrich wrote most of the songs.

Shortly after, the band let Dave Mustaine go, replacing him with Kirk Hammett.

Metallica gains a reputation for partying, donning the nickname “Alchoholica”.

Death of Cliff Burton

On September 27, 1986, bassist Cliff Burton was killed in a tour bus crash.

Jason Newsted was brought in as the new bassist.

Metallica’s next album, …And Justice for All spawned the hit single “One”.

Success and Turmoil Metallica released several successful albums reflecting a more

mature sound.

In 2001, Jason Newsted quit Metallica following inner turmoil.

Metallica’s new bassist was found in Robert Trujillo.

Hetfield sought help for his addiction to alcohol.

Metallica teamed up with the San Francisco Orchestra to record their “S&M” album.

Family Life & Injuries

James Hetfield is married to his wife Francesca, and they have 3

children.

Hetfield helped ESP guitars become standard in metal.

Hetfield has been called “accident prone”. In 1992, due to a communication mishap, he was severely burned in a stage explosion.

Rock & Roll Hall of Fame to Guitar Hero

In 2009, Metallica was inducted in the Rock and Roll Hall of

Fame.

The band was also featured in several video games, including Rock Band and Guitar Hero Metallica.
