Some Facts

Alaska is one of the fifty states in the U.S.A.

The population of Alaska is 626,932. The state capital is Juneau.

The residents in Alaska are known as Alaskans.

The largest city in Alaska is Anchorage.

It was declared as the 49th state in 1959.

Geography Even though Alaska is one of the American states its situated

North West of Canada.

Alaskas coastline is 6640 miles making it longer than any ofthe other American states coastlines.

To the south of Alaska is the Pacific Ocean and the Gulf ofAlaska with the Arctic Ocean to the north.

To the west is the Bering Sea , the Bering Strait and Chukchi.

The area of Alaska is 586,412 km2 which makes it the largeststate in the U.S.

Languages

There are many different languages spoken in Alaska.

84.7% of people over five speak English in Alaska.

At home about 3.5% of people speak Spanish while 2.2%speak another Indo-European language.

4.3% speak an Asian language while 5.3% speak a differentlanguage.

Cities

There are many cities in Alaska. The largest one is Anchorage.Anchorages population is 291,826. Next largest is Fairbanksand then Juneau which is also the state capital.

The Climate

Alaska has a different climate depending on the region.

Summers are normally mild but can get quite cool.

In the winter though, it is very cold and there is a lot ofsnow.

History- Alaska Natives

Many indigenous people lived in Alaska for thousands of yearsbefore the Europeans came over. They had many differentnames for their people. One of them was the Tlingit people.They lived in what is now Southeast Alaska. The names for theother people are the Tsimshian, the Aluet, the Yupik, theAlutiiq, the Gwichin and the Inuit.

Sports

There are many sports teams in Alaska. Most of them are based inAnchorage.

There are four rugby union teams based in Anchorage. They are theBird Creek Barbarian RFC, Anchorage Thunderbirds, Mat ValleyMaulers RFC and Spenard Green Dragons.

The Alaska Aces are a minor league ice-hockey team. The AlaskaDream is a team in the American Basketball Association and theAnchorage Glacier Pilots are part of the National Baseball Congress.

Animals

There are lots of animals living in Alaska including the brownbear, the black bear and the polar bear. Also the moose,caribou, the mountain goat, the bison, the dall sheep and theorca live their too.
